Every time I read an article or a book on how to build self-confidence at work, the first thing on the menu is often ‘dress well’ as though the clothes have the power to do the magic.
Don’t get me wrong, dressing well is a necessary ingredient for building self-confidence, but it is not the most important ingredient in the soup!

There were times that you were probably the most dressed person in the room but you weren’t the one getting the whole attention nor steering the wheel of conversation.

You secretly admire those who get the attention because they have the confidence to command it.

Why You Need to Build Self-Confidence at Work

1. Self-confidence promotes charisma, charm, and attention.

2. A confident person is more likely to sail through an interview and achieve more goals.

3. Self-confidence makes you approachable and put people around you at ease.

4. You dare to take on more duties and expand your value proposition at work.

5. Self-confidence makes you believe in your skills and abilities.

6. It makes you a comfortable team player without feeling jealous about other team members’ abilities.

7. People trust you enough to share skills and knowledge with you.

8. A confident person wins more friendships and goes far in life than someone who is not confident.

Self-confidence is not the same as being brash and uncouth. It should never be mistaken for bringing other people down or stifling other people’s growth professionally.

It is not the act of comparing your strength to other people’s weaknesses or your weakness to other people’s strengths.

Self-confidence means believing in your abilities. It is an internal assurance and trust in oneself; a balanced view of your strength and weakness in no comparison to others.

10 ways to Build Self Confidence at work

1. Be knowledgeable

People admire and naturally gravitate towards a person who they perceived is more knowledgeable than they are and is willing to share what they know.

Invest in your professional knowledge and skills by attending workshops, conferences, or training programs relevant to your field.

You can also stay updated on your industry trends by reading.

In the same vein, know a little something about other subjects outside your industry. It makes it easy for you to keep up with conversations that are not about work.

2. Identify and leverage your strengths

Recognize your skills, talents, and accomplishments. Focus on what you do well and find opportunities to showcase your expertise in the workplace. Be willing to share with others what you know. When you leverage your strengths, you’ll feel more confident in your abilities.

3. Hone Your Communication Skills

The ability to communicate your ideas well without mincing words can build your confidence and earn you the respect and admiration of other team members.

4. Seek feedback

Most times, we are no better judge of our character. Occasionally request feedback from your supervisors, colleagues, or mentors; constructive feedback can provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas for improvement. Use the feedback to make necessary adjustments and track your progress.

5.Practice self-care

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial for maintaining confidence. Get enough rest, eat well, exercise regularly, and manage stress effectively. When you feel good physically and mentally, your confidence will naturally improve.

6. Pay Attention to your Posture
How you walk, sit and stand says a lot about your self-confidence. When you stand, stand with your shoulder upright.
Slouching on your chair during work hours gives the impression of a lazy person, impacting how others see you.

Have a gait that exhumes your confidence. Walk with your head up high and maintain eye contact when you greet or communicate.

7. Take on new challenges
Seek opportunities to step outside your comfort zone and take on new challenges. Sometimes, stepping out might mean picking up new skills.

Embrace projects or responsibilities that push you to learn and grow. By stretching your skills, you’ll build confidence in your ability to handle different situations.

8. Celebrate your successes

Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Give yourself credit for your achievements and take pride in your work.
Never belittle your accomplishment or reject praises from your superiors.
Celebrating your successes reinforces a positive mindset and boosts your self-confidence.

9.Surround yourself with positive influences

Surround yourself with supportive colleagues and mentors who believe in your abilities.
Avoid the nay-sayers, the office gossip, and those who find fault in the system. They set you up for a downward spiral path.
Engage in conversations and relationships that uplift and encourage you. Positive influences can help you stay motivated and help you build your self-confidence.

10. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity

Understand that failure and mistakes are likely to happen in the workspace. They are a natural part of growth and development. Instead of letting failures undermine your confidence, view them as valuable learning experiences. Analyze what went wrong, make adjustments, and apply the lessons learned to future endeavors.

Conclusion

Self-confidence is not inherent. This skill can be learned, developed, and strengthened through practice and self-reflection.
Building self-confidence is a lifetime process that involves embracing your strengths, accepting your weaknesses, and believing in your potential.
With consistent practice and a positive mindset, you can develop self-confidence at work.

I am bookmarking this, thanks for sharing.
Even though we know these, many times work pressure gets them off our daily practice.

Hi Blessing, good evening; as a guy is it compulsory to wear a suit to an IT support role interview?

Okay. Thanks
I went down yesterday. I had to go with my instincts and didn’t wear a suit. None of the interviewees wore a suit either so I didn’t feel awkward

Good to hear that! Wishing you success. Let me know how it goes, but I am hopeful for you.
