Political dynasties in Africa have been declining throughout the years, except for Central Africa, where we still have such, and Gabon is one country that is currently home to such a dynasty.

Since 1967, the Bongo family name has been associated with the presidential seat of Gabon. After a long-serving president died in office, his son was elected to succeed him. However, that's about to change as the country just validated 19 candidates to contest the coming election.

The current president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has been in power for over 14 years, declared on Sunday that he will run for a third term in the August 26 presidential elections. Despite opposition concerns that Bongo is unfit for office, his candidature was authorised.
