I remember that of Liberia very very well Nigeria lead ECOMOG troops that gave life to Liberia after a very bitter War. I remember that night watching NTA news at 9 with my folks when Obasanjo visited Liberia after the return of Democratic rule and the win of their new president Helen Johnson Sirleaf. Whenever I see Okonjo Iweala,I remember ms Sirleaf. She also has this signature headgear like that of Okonjo too. Liberians queued with tears in their eyes from the airport, the physically challenged who got injured due to the endless war and Charles Taylor's grip on power. All waving and saying THANK YOU NIGERIA. Taylor had resigned then and was on Exile in Nigeria, chopping life in Calabar. We literally gave them Life! Saw George Weah days back dancing and teaching his people one wayre dance.. The price of Freedom was paid dearly by them. War is a pretty pretty bad thing 2 Likes |

From recent history, the irony of this coup and the passion of ordinary Nigeriens is that the soldiers who took over from the politicians often end up as bad as the politicians. It is like Orwellian "Animal Farm". The facts are: 1. Coupists don't have any economic roadmap to follow just like the visionless politicians they removed. Things are based on the whims and caprices of the junta leaders and they are not accountable to any one. 2. Having taking great risk to take over government, they will corruptly enrich themselves, their families and associates as compensation. Subsequently, they would become power-drunk dictators. Eventually, Niger and these other anglophone countries will be back to square one. And the situation might even become worst by swapping France for Russian ruthless Wagner fighters as they will continue the exploitation of minerals and will recruit many young people and arm them with the prospect of many of them breaking away and forming militias. The key question is, what has happened in Mali and Guinea since the Col. Assimi Goita and Col. Mamady Doumbouya took over in those countries respectively? The one in Burkina Faso just goes around in military gears surrounded by armed guards, posing like a superman. 3 Likes |
