Covenant University will soon be ranked world best,if it could accomplish this much in just 9 yrs, then lets be on da look out . lol

solaceguy:

Redeemer's University is the best in West Africa in Sciences

Do this schools actually take part in academic competitions of any sort or is it a matter of an over shadowed name of the church. The ranked schools will not sit back and wait to be dethroned. If possible take a visit to one of the schools and see what it takes to even rank a school.

Actually 2 South African Universities. They are University of Cape Town (the undisputed best University in Africa) and Wits University (University of the Witwatersrand).

You are very correct. May God help us o!

+1

Most graduates of these schools are babies that need some growing up to do. They're not been exposed to the real world.

Wetin dem de teach us for Nigeria universities?

No Nigeria lecturer goes into real research in the right sense- Most works are copy and paste and modified
Research funds when released are shared and spent by VCs and lecturers
No conducive learning environment( Tables & chairs, lecture rooms (150 students in 50 capacity room) etc)
No world class infastructures and facilities- Even private Universities
Books in the Libraries are Old and no longer in use
Practical equipments in lab & workshops are late or not functioning (Lathe machine in my school is 200 years old behind)
Lecturers have their own businesses by the corner not dedicated at all.
etc

These are some of the indices used to rate universities in the world

what brainpulse said, exactly,

Why is this news and why are people surprised, if a Nigerian university is in the top 1000 in the world, now that would be news.

I am not one bit surprised!!! With the disposition of the government towards education (university education), I doubt that any Nigerian University will make the top 1000 in the next 10 years.
For those shouting about the very young universities, they have just started.
Personally, I think that any university in the first 800 or 1000 is good at it.
For clarity below is the criteria for the ranking.

"The Times Higher Education World University Rankings were developed in concert with our rankings data provider, Thomson Reuters, with expert input from more than 50 leading figures in the sector from 15 countries across every continent. We believe we have created the gold standard in international university performance comparisons.

Our rankings of the top universities across the globe employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching to research to knowledge transfer. These 13 elements are brought together into five headline categories, which are:

•Teaching — the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)
•Research — volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
•Citations — research influence (worth 30 per cent)
•Industry income — innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
•International outlook — staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent)."
