After much enhancement by the photo editor, I'm still very angry that our national stadium is a no roof stadium. Sad!
The 4 big lights are missing.
I remember those lights in the 1990s.
Can light up the whole surulere and yaba.

Where is the Light na?
The stadium used to have 4 big massive light stands that can light up the whole surulere and Yaba.
They played one worldcup there, I think in 1996.
I was living in Yaba then, and they used the stadium light.
Our house in yaba was lighted from those stadium light in Surulere.

Good to see.our greatest problem is lack of maintenance culture. The authorities should as matter of fact fashion out to keep them maintained.

Why are they unusable? Don't those countries have football leagues which can be played in those stadiums?
Clubs have their own stadiums outside such govt owned stadiums.except on contractual basis

They should design a stadium cover for the whole edifice. It is still an eye-sore without a stadium cover

Obviously this is ongoing renovation, from the twitter posts attached. Though in all honesty I don't see any outcome that could justify this stadium still being considered as the National Stadium

That stadium holds Nigeria super eagles best win percentage. Just 3 defeats in over 25 years. No other national stadium in the world can boast that. That place was a fortress.

And it was run down by IBB when he wanted everything to move to Abuja. ObJ and subsequent PDP government decided to decimate national infrastructure to score political points.

Happy to see it coming back. Awesome atmosphere

No. It wasn't IBB.

The stadium was being used until the early 2000s. It was abandoned and left to decay after the Abuja National Stadium was built in 2003.

The stadium hosted the world cup in 1999, 6 years after IBB left office.

The stadium is obviously undergoing renovation after being abandoned for almost 20 years (a lot of the comments on this thread are being made because of politics).

Some of the features, like the roof and floodlights have been removed because it is being renovated.

Many ministers have wanted to renovate it, but they couldn't get funding for that.

A minister wanted the Lagos State Government to take over the stadium and the state government was prepared to do that, but the FG wanted the LASG to pay for tje right to manage it, while the LASG wanted it for free.

They should fix the sets and add an exterior edifice that includes a cover that forms a roof over the stands. Just go and look ak how Napoli modernized their stadium over the years

That stadium had a cover when it was built . How it end up open like that is what I can't comprehend. Maybe they sold it grin

This is a beautiful edifice,agreed!
However,we have a general problems in Nigeria!
We don't have Maintenance Culture-
In abroad everything you see shining, some Organisations are contracted to do the job year in ,year out - without interference, but here,we used Politics for everything and when their Cronies gets there, they just Collect the Money, without doing the job and the place deteriorates
continuosly!
1β€’ We MUST Maintain these Federal and State Structures/Buildings- because it enhances our Values.
2β€’ Get a template for maintaining our Assets on Yearly Basis!
3β€’ Pay the Workers - who maintains those Places,by raising their Salaries and Allowances,to meet the inflation on timely basis,so that they wouldn't look elsewhere or be part of the destruction of the Place.
God bless all those that makes it Possible- for this Place is now looking GLOW!

The stadium was still being used after the government abandoned it. A rugby club played its matches there and some track athletes trained there.

Totally agree. We should stop calling it national stadium. It is so outdated. We have only one national stadium ND it's in Abuja.

And what exactly will this stadium be used for in Lagos after it's renovated? Nothing happens there then it goes bad again.

Re: Latest Pictures Of The National Stadium, Lagos. by naptu2: 3:06pm On Sep 25, 2023
Someone has mentioned something very interesting.

That stadium is a cash cow. I think that's why area boys wrote to the government in the 2010s that the government should allow them to manage the stadium (they could see the potential in it).

The stadium hosted the Silverbird concerts in the early 1980s and the Star Mega Jam concerts in the early 2000s.

It hosted wrestling matches (promoted by Power Mike promotions) and Eagle Belt boxing matches in the 1980s and '90s.

And, interestingly, it hosted many Christian religious events (Believers Love World) in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Those Christian events were the subject of controversy. Sports journalists complained that they ruined the pitch, but they continued to be held there because they brought in a lot of money.

The problem with the stadium is that people will always complain when government wants to renovate it. They will say that the renovation costs too much and that the money will be better spent on education and healthcare. They forget that the stadium also brings in a lot of money.

It's a disgrace to Nigeria to call that thing National stadium, the proper name should be Lagos stadium.
Re: Latest Pictures Of The National Stadium, Lagos. by naptu2: 3:18pm On Sep 25, 2023
About stadium designs, it depends on who owns the stadium and what it is used for.

Premier League stadiums are mainly owned by football clubs and they are used solely for football. We have some of that kind of stadium in Nigeria (Onikan, Sharks and Kano Pillars stadiums).

Stadia like the National Stadium are owned by government and they use these stadia to train a wide variety of athletes for many different sports (track and field athletics, football, basketball, etc). It is a waste of money for them to build a separate stadium for each sport. Besides, governments also like to host multi-sports events like the National Sports Festival, the All Africa Games, etc and that is easier when you have a multi-use stadium.

They will soon use religion activities to destroy it. But thank God almost all those religion sets now have their permanent site
