Ajaokuta Steel Mill To Start Production Next Year. by Orobiju: 8:43am On Oct 20, 2011
The moribund Ajaokuta Iron and Steel Mill is to begin production next year to enhance Nigeria's lost economic value in steel development. Minister of Mines and Steel, Arc. Musa Muhammed Sada who gave the assurance in Abuja during an interactive session with journalists yesterday (Wednesday, 19th Oct.) said the resuscitation of the mill for production of iron and steel represented a bold move by the Federal Governnent to increase the Nation's GDP by improving the nation's mining industry.

Pictorial evidence of Aregbesola slapping people? You're funny o!
You can personally get that evidence by holding a placard outside Aregbe's house. See if he won't daze you with some blinding slaps that will join your ear to your nose.

Olodo. Like leader, like follower.

Re: Ajaokuta Steel Mill To Start Production Next Year. by joeyfire(m): 4:59pm On Oct 20, 2011
This is impossible. How the steel mill wan take start? The facility never took off and when obj brought his ''lets privatize our heritage'' madness, the fate of the project was doomed.

I know there have been more than 2 or 3 investors but i am very sure of the antics of the indian homeboys whose business plan was to strip everything of value and export for sale to ready buyers. I heard from a friend whose brother in law was a soviet trained engineer and staff of the complex that those guys were stripping bricks from walls because everything in that place was of the highest quality.

Abeg does anyone have any positive stories to tell

This is good news to those who know whats really up in ASCL. The mills and thermal power plant are fine n jst need a little boost. What the indian brothers striped were mainly spares in store. The plant can easily be resuscitated if the FG commits to it. I jst hope this is not one of em talk shows

Hmmmmm this sounds familiar!

It should now be clear who is advising GEJ how to make false promises.

could be looting opportunity. In the same manner Obasanjo looted $16billion he promised for power projects.

11th July 1992 - The New York Times
Babangida Promises that Nigeria's Ajaokuta Steel Plant Is To Begin Pouring By End of Month

AJAOKUTA, Nigeria, July 9— With its sprawling network of pipes and cylinders and immense exhaust towers, the 60,000-acre Ajaokuta steel complex, the biggest industrial project in sub-Saharan Africa, poses a striking contrast to the villages of straw-roofed huts that surround it.

Officials hope that once the plant begins pouring metal as scheduled this month, this remote town in the heart of southern Nigeria will stand as a symbol of this developing country's dream of greatness and a monument to engineering tenacity.

But Ajaokuta has also become a target of increasing cynicism among Nigerians who have come to regard the project, after 12 years of delays and cost overruns, as a seemingly endless economic drain.

"If there is such a thing as a white elephant, this is surely one of its more awesome specimens," said Nosa Igiebor, editor of Tell magazine, an independent weekly that has published several articles highly critical of the project. 'Impressive Achievement'

Indeed, although initially planned for completion in about six years at a cost of $1.4 billion, the Ajaokuta project has already cost more than $4 billion, and Western diplomats and donors say it may need hundreds of millions more before it becomes fully operational.

Ajaokuta, some Nigerian analysts and Western diplomats say, is a relic from another era, when many third-world nations, aspiring to catch up with industrialized societies in the West, built vast prestige projects that often proved to be financial flops.

"Even to have built such a project is an impressive achievement, and the Nigerians should be lauded for that," a Western diplomat said. "But in the end, the real issue is whether it will ever prove commercially viable, and for now, that seems unlikely."

Does it occur to you that industrialisation and steel availability goes hand in hand. Before you export what you have, you must have met your local needs.

Though the minister's statement must be taken with a pinch of salt.

well industralization, matters , but whos gonna buy the steele, when they export it is the main isssue that the reason it has never been productive over the years
