I would suggest our constitution should be revisited.

The 19 northern states should rule themselves while the 17 southern states should also rule themselves

The minimum qualifications to contest for as little as LG chairman should be a degree while governor and president should be MS above

Only one term (4 years) should be consider
Anybody above 60 years should not be considered for any political office

No carer politicians should be allowed to come back into the system

Even if you replace the Nigerian Constitution with the constitution of the nation of Denmark or Sweden, it would all end up the same way. So, as long as the average Nigerian continues to ride in the back seat as far as affairs in their community, their local government, states, and nation as a whole, nothing will be achieved. undecided

Kobo, you make a great point. For me I believe our local senators and HOR members, local government officials and governors have more impact on our live than the presidency at the centre.
These people have more power to change the lives of average Nigerians and the earlier we start being participative and holding them accountable, the better for us as individuals and a nation.

Yet those at that level think Government is merely an avenue to collect and chop their share when they could instead be making a direct impact on the lives of the citizens and their communities. Go to any place in Nigeria to see that government is almost non-existent at the local government level, yet there are officials paid to do government work even at that level. undecided

They collect monthly allocations, pay salaries and pocket the rest of the money and everyone in the community seems to be fine with it.

Imagine if a governor can invest in a mechanized agricultural farm in the state that would employ thousands of citizens, increase state IGR and help reduce cost of food.

What about investment in transportation or power generation. These things are not rocket science. My city is responsible for all the power generation and makes a lot of money in the process.

All the governors do in Nigeria is award overbloated contracts for mediocre road constructions and the citizens hail and worship them.

How many people are even aware of their state budgets.

yes an average Nigerians are part of the rot but the leaders contributed hugely to the mess. A leader was elected to represent a nation, state, constituents, LG et al but failed to play his/her role for being elected to represent them. If you can observe the rate of cyber fraud in Nigeria has increased badly this time compare to years back. The more government failed in her responsibility the more menace increases in the country. Government doesn't have plans for the out of school eeming youths, they had no plan to secure our lives and properties, poor education (have you been to public primary and secondary school lately?) More than 200 students conglomerate in one small class with leak roofs, no chairs nor writing materials. Our healthcare is nothing to write home about. The japa syndrome amongst the healthcare professionals had made government owned hospital to deteriorate further. Go to any general hospital with any serious emergency and watch how you'd die like a fish because there is no enough doctors on ground to attend to the high population. Corruption is something we can talk from now till thy kingdom come. Almost everyone is corrupt in one way or the other but the leaders are the worst, they are meant to lead by example. Our politicians are one of the highest paid in the world while their subjects are poor with 30k minimum wage. Our leaders had other countries passport. They don't trust our healthcare, their kids school abroad, they move about with fleet of convoy and security. The politicians live large while an average Nigerians doesn't know where their next meal will come from.

What would you then proffer as the way out? AMENDMENT OF CONSTITUTION will go along way. That oil belongs to the Niger Delta not those Aboki. That oil is the reason why all these politicians kill to get to that office. A regional government will cut off the northern region from having access to Niger Delta oil. Corruption will reduce to some extent.

state governments aren't incharge of the millitary, police and some paramilitary. Even though they get monthly cut on security budget. Yet, they blame insecurity situation in their state at the centre. Chibok girls abduction was put on Jonathan's head. Except FG decided to establish state police which some people are skeptical about because they felt state governments will hyjack it and use them as a tool. LG Chairmen has very little or no influence on their subjects. They're yet to get autonomy from the FG. The state governments on the other hand depends on FG on monthly basis for allocation. Very few state can survive without FG support. Some State government are yet to pay the 30k minimum wage. State and LG are very much closer to the masses compare to the president but they're being held down by the FG.

1. But lets back up for a second here. For the past 24 or so years Nigeria has been supposedly running a democratic situation. Now, according to the textbooks, Democracy is meant to be a government of the people by the will of the people — the elected politicians are meant to be held accountable to the will of the people. However, Nigeria has to this day been running instead a Government for the people by the will of the politicians as handed down to the people by said politicians. Basically, it has been run according to the will of the political class and they have somehow also been expected to be accountable to their own selves you see. So who has been there to hold the government accountable? The very same corrupt politicians who were elected by the people according to the will of said politicians. So, what exactly did you expect to happen? undecided

2. Leave that darn constitution alone and tackle the main problem that the people continue to gloss over to date. Government is not magic neither is democracy a magical configuration tool for government. Input from the people is necessary to make both work for the people. So as long as the people continue to live as though it is all supposed to somehow work without effort on their part, then it will continue as it always has. undecided

Let us thank goodness that the state government is not in charge of the military and police still. If it had been the case, the Nigerian situation would be far worse than it is today, I kid you not. We saw what Fashola did with his gang of thugs in Lagos, in the name of progress. Thank God it didn't get terribly worse. And we have seen what the so-called hisbah police have done in some of the Northern areas. Imagine if every single governor had that level of power to work with — state-level, even local-government level, touts— na shootouts we go dey here left and right for that country. undecided

Good question and I will love to contribute to this and not just because of the 1200 but because of the love for my nation and how to improve it's standard...

1) I think division will make a bold step or rather we should go back to our regional leaders partner that Ojukwu dissolve when he gets to power ..

2) I think if we can allow military too to rule them they can use their power to give others and command to regulate things on the country with just the word ORDER

3) to make nigeria a producing country so we won't depend on foreign goods that depends on dollars is that the government should make emphasis on people attending monotechnics I mean technical schools and they should equip themsp we will have more skillful individual to produce new things and not majority going to universities with mere theory and hence we won't be able to produce ..

4) We should vote for d sake of tribe because it's doesn't really count instead we should vote someone that will be able to do d job irrespective of who will win ..

Infact I dey come

I honestly would prefer a state police situation in which case we can properly hold the state governots accountable for the state security.

If that power is misused by the governor, it would form a basis of performance metrics for that governor in the next election, the people will then be able to decide whether to re-elect the governor or not.

The only advantage state police would have is to create jobs opportunities for the teeming youths and probably increase security. However, how many of these state can sustain their welfare? Expecially those northern states prone with high security challenges. Some of these state hasn't implemented 30k minimum wage.

They will be allocated more budget for security which will go to the police. Overall, the police welfare will greatly increase under the state as compared with what we have now.

obviously state governments will used the state police to their own advantage against their opponents. Even their welfare might be a problem in some states with lower budgets that are yet to implement the earlier 30k minimum wage.

what then stopped them from allocating or increasing their budget to accommodate the earlier 30k minimum wage? It is no longer a news that some states are still paying 18k minimum wage at this age and time. Some states couldn't employ workers into her state service, Expecially public school due to lack of funds or corruption. Some schools up north don't have more than a teacher or 2 at most.

What about each state keep their revenue generated from the state resources instead of remittance to the FG? What about some potential resources in some states that are not yet utilized?

Give automy to the LG chairmen being the closest to the masses.

One of the key sector we are lagging behind is in electricity. If we have enough electricity in the public grid, it will eliminate most hardships associated with the high cost of petrol and diesel used in powering generators.

So fixing the power sector will have a postive multiplier effect. We can increase from 5,000 megawatts to 50,000 megawatts in four years.

1) Burn all d churches and Mosques
Africans are developing, or have developed a "my helper is out there" mindset. So, instead of thinking of ways to solve problem, we sit back hoping a miraculous helper will come and hand over jobs to us.
Plus, religious discrimination is a real problem in every sectoe of the economy..

2) Educate the people..This should be no.1 but, it can never work if 90% of Christians will believe what pastor chris will tell them about 5G..

3) Restructure government. Individuals states are too reliant on FG.

4) Improve infrastructure of key cities in the country. If Nigeria can't have light 247,then Kaduna, Kano, Abj, Jos, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and a few others should have nothing less than 20 hours.

5) Upgrade the constitution and enforce it..

6) We focus on the big big politicians and forget the errand boy who changes the figures on the document. More accountability and transparency is required.

7) Peovide infrastructures that allow farmers to lease machine equipment... Increase agricultural products to reduce food cost.. If food is available, violence will reduce..

The problem is the wickedness of the typical Nigerian and the solution is mass action.

Take my community for example. Our roads have been bad for years now and I can guess that at least 10,000 households use that road at least once per week. If all the households were to contribute 100 naira per month we could have a fund amounting to 60 million naira in 5 years. With such an amount of money and the support of locally sourced human and material resources the roads could be fixed by ourselves. Now this is what could happen with just 10,000 households. Imagine what could happen when 1,000,000 households working together to fix their shared challenges.

One may ask, what is stopping such a move? Well you can be 100% sure that a huge proportion of that 10,000 households are made up of people who would seek ways to defraud the community and cart away with the money or they will start yelling "What about the government? Why can't the government do the roads?" even when they know that the government is just as evil as they are.

If a lot of us are good people, mass action will be the silver bullet that would solve all of our problems but because most of us are evil we will never be able to act as a single entity, we will keep electing evil politicians among us and we will keep wallowing in challenges.
