LASU Students Protest The Increment Of Fees From N25,000 To N250,000 by HighChief4(m): 4:08pm On Oct 27, 2011 |
Lasu Students Angry As Fashola Increases Fees From N25,000 To N250,000 STUDENTS of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday protested the recent increment in school fees from N25,000 to N250,000 per session by Governor Babatunde Fashola. The aggrieved students, who bore placards such as “Fashola, You are wicked; Reduce our school fees now”, paralysed commercial activities at the Lagos Television (LTV) when they stormed the area. Speaking to journalists, President of the Students Union Government (SUG), Akeem Olalekan, said the purpose of protesting to the television house was to draw the attention of Lagos residents to the recent increase in the school fees by the state government. “When the government increased the school fees in the past, it argued that it was to upgrade the facilities in the school. Then, the fee was increased from N250 to N25,000. At present, it is a new season and government has just increased it to N250,000. We all know that in Fashola’s manifesto, he promised to give qualitative education to the masses but with the new increment, it shows that the Lagos State government is not bothered by the plight of the less privileged people who are about 70 per cent across the metropolis.” Olalekan challenged the morality behind the increment, stressing that the government had so far failed in the previous policies to provide adequate facilities for the institution. “The university still lacks standard library, health centre, good road and modern educational facilities,” he said. One of the students, who desired anonymity, described the increment as an idea to take away education from children of common men, saying that the policy is meant for children of the elite. Meanwhile, the House of Assembly had summoned the university authority, including various unions and the SUG president. The protesting students appealed to the citizens to intervene in the increment, describing it as unjust, wicked and unfair to the poor students. http://www.nigeriancompass.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7083:lasu-students-angry-as-fashola-increases-fees-from-n25000-to-n250000&catid=54:nigeria-today&Itemid=594 |

Oga Fashola needs to look into the financial aid structure of American Universities. In the US, although tuition is set at a certain number, not everyone pays the same amount. There are scholarships and also need based financial aid. The amount of financial assistance a student receives is usually based on his or her parents income/assets, how old the parents are, and the number of dependents that rely on the parents income. In some schools in the US students whose parents make below a certain amount go to school tuition free. While students whose parents are wealthy pay as much $50,000. If we are going to provide our children with a world class university education, then people who can pay the full cost of the education should pay the full cost. I am sure that it costs the government far more than N250,000 to educate a student at LASU. We can have a system where tuition is free for students whose parents make less than N1,000,000 (combined income) annually. For students whose parents make above that, tuition can be set based on their parents income bracket with higher income brackets paying more and lower income brackets paying less. The maximum amount can be set at N1 million or even N2 million for high income parents and foreign students. Some of the best universities in the world cost as much as $50,000 a year for tuition room and board. Nigerians need to understand that a good education costs money to provide. It is about balancing the cost of providing a good education with the need to provide equal access to both high income and low income Nigerians. 1 Like |

I wish Fashola well on this one. This is one difficult decision to make. Qualitative education is not cheap, our people are still very poor and yet quality should not be sacrificed for quantity. Let me give him an idea. Lagos should introduce different fee for state resident and students from other states. LASU is a state institution, taxpayers in the state should be considered. Scholarships should be given to exceptional students from any part of the country. |

Re: LASU Students Protest The Increment Of Fees From N25,000 To N250,000 by Jakumo(m): 4:52am On Oct 28, 2011 |
dplordx: A ten-fold increase equates with a 1000% price rise, and not a 100%, which translates to a mere doubling of the original figure. If this price increase is necessary for the running of the university, provision for scholarship awards to brilliant but economically underprivileged students MUST be made by Nigeria's future president Fashola. |

Jakumo: LASU already has this in place. Get a 4.0 out of 5.0 (or higher) and not only do you pay no tuition, but you are given a stipend. |

Whoever your boss is must have a helluva time managing you, heh. How many times must he explain something to you before you get it? How many hours a week does he have to waste leading you away from the idle paths your brain seems to follow after misunderstanding simple statements he gives you? I'm surprised you haven't been canned yet. |

Obiagu1: If you don't have money and you are not brilliant enough to have 4.0 out 5.0. Then drop out of school, it's not compulsory. The state is providing free education up to secondary school level. That should be enough, the state is poor. |

Am in support of this, You people are shouting that they ain't considering the common Man, If u get to the school what do you see "ANIMALS" Yess Animals, who are they? The common man you are crying out loud for. They are always the one that fight, get into cultism, smoke around the compound and littering it with waste materials, do the illegal stuffs like YY and rituals, They are also the one's that steal other students mobile phones and above all "The most un-serious in the school" If i was the governor, i would rather leave the increment that way, and create an alternative for the serious minded common man "Creating a scholarship program" This way the intelligent common man can partake in it. |

At the event, they demanded a reversal of over 700 per cent increase in tuition slammed on them by the university authorities. N348,000 to study the arts? At this rate third level education would soon become the preserve of the wealthy only. Whereas N25,000 does not deliver quality education anywhere in Nigeria, an increase of 900% goes beyond the pale and needs to be resisted through all legal means by LASU students The UNDP estimates the cost of university education in Africa as as $10,000-$15,000 for 4-year degree, i.e. $2500-3750/(student*year). (This is consistent with data from World Bank and student surveys: the World Bank reports mean government spending of $2000/(student*year), and students reported personal contributions of ca. $500/(student*year). ) The total annual cost of tertiary education spending in Africa each year is then $7.5-$11 billion, of which ca. $2 billion is borne by students and their families. We can then conclude that doubling university education in sub-Saharan Africa would require ca. $10 billion/year in additional funding -- http://www.arp.harvard.edu/AfricaHigherEducation/Economics2.html |

I think there must be a misunderstanding somewhere. Fashola cannot do something like this- 900% school fees increment in a state university? This cannot come from a progressive governor of a leading state in the Yoruba southwest- the "Centre of Excellence" Not from someone who enjoyed free education from Jakande for four out of the five years he was in Birch Freeman High School and may have received Lagos state bursary to assist him through his years in University of Benin. And to think I read that the parents of these students contribute N20b monthly as taxes, levies, penalties etc to Fashola's treasury as part of his N450b annual budget It is either Fashola wants to breed more Area boys against 2015 or raise cash for his godfather's case with CCB. In any case this uncalled for. |
