Most people talking down about it are medical practitioners themselves especially doctors and that's because it hurts their ego. Funny thing is they usually consult google too on most cases.

I personally had a near death experience this year and all thanks to God, google and "pubmed" website.

After spending thousands of naira at both private and government hospital, na google God finally use safe me. Even at that, I wouldn't use the word incompetent but inexperienced, not well trained ( most senior medical practitioners that suppose to train these people have traveled out of the country, eventhough issues like this happen throughout the world but that of Nigeria is getting worse by the day), high work load which could make them unbalance and lack of proper equipment for diagnosis.

But if you are consulting google, you really have to know what you are doing because there are also many wrong information out there.

A lot of people are ignorant about getting the right type of healthcare.
There's nothing wrong in consulting Google or any other online material to get information on health related issues. But care must be taken in following some of the advice & treatment.
There're various level of healthcare & likewise different cadres of doctors with varying levels of experience. The level of training & attitude to work also varies. A good doctor is one that gives the patient due attention & proper treatment. Some cases may need referral for specialist treatment, investigations & procedures. Patients & care givers are encouraged to report erring doctors to the appropriate authorities if they're not satisfied with treatment offered. Public federal institutions have a SERVICOM unit.

He say nah guessing. Do you know how much each of the tests to rule those differential diagnosis cost?! Each of those things he listed could be worrying the patient but it is his clinical examination and history that will narrow it down to the likely culprit.

Because appendix is very difficult to diagnose via tests.

A scan might locate it, but most of the time, it does not show on scans. There are all kinds of differentials to the appendix.

Also, laparoscopic surgery is slowly coming in, so there need not be tearing up of the abdomen.

The first thing he said after examining my stomach is “You’ll need to admit you immediately for surgery before it will burst”.

Polite discussion, I was even smiling, thinking it's a normal human being I was talking to

Told me I should leave his office

I was still smiling, I thought it was a joke,
Long story short, he chased me out of the office.
The matron outside signaled another woman to enter his office, elderly woman, probably 70's, the surgeon started shouting she's walking too slow, and it's like she's not serious.
Other patients were replying

"doctor take it easy na, don't you have a mother?, this is a government hospital na, take it easy doctor"

He started shouting to the matron to call another patient.

UPTH will humble you in this life. I kept wondering if I went ahead with the surgery there, the man can even slap me on the hospital bed.

This period was a very depressing period in my life. Low self esteem at its lowest ever. I couldn't even speak back. Zero confidence. No job. I regret leaving the hospital like a coward till today. Especially after the surgeon shouted at the elderly woman.

Most surgeons are hot tempered with bad manners, they are usually toxic and treat patients like trash which is very wrong

I can deduce form your write up that, it was this you I - too - know attitude that denied you knowledged of the reasons for the Drs diagnosis or even supply them with the informations required for them to arrive at the right diagnosis.

Drs are not magicians, so you don't expect them to always give you on spot diagnosis at the mere sight of you as a patient. Drs need not just the history of how your illness evolved but other related associations with it and thereafter thoroughly examine you before arriving at a conclusion which they might reaffirm by sending you on some related tests. It's a process that requires patience and cooperation with your Dr.

Now, how do you expect a Dr to thrive and perform well with a patient who is already impatient, who had probably ( in his minute mind) figured out his problem from the internet and had also presumed that he knows better than the Dr.

I'm a medical doctor specialized in O&G and I can tell you that we have many incompetent doctors out there. This is not to shade my colleagues but truth must be told.

In medical practice, a good doctor is one who knows his or her limits. I know my limits and I'm very careful not to cause any harm to my patients. Unfortunately, many doctors don't know how to come about a diagnosis, most just write routine tests/investigations and end up treating symptomatology rather than the root cause. Many also use polypharmacy which is also wrong. While the majority just give iv infusion and treat typhoid and malaria. The health system in Nigeria is very very bad, avoid government or public hospitals. The doctors there will just use the patient to teach the medical students and your treatment if you're a patient can be delayed. Many patients die preventable deaths and it's very painful and alarming.

About using Google, the truth is that most doctors use Google either to confirm a diagnosis or consider other options that may not readily come to their minds however the difference between a medical doctor using Google and a layman using Google is that a well trained medical doctor can easily identify and filter out the wrong informations online that the layman can't. There are a lot of wrong informations on google that are not backed up by scientific study and I see a lot of patients present to me and ask concerning questions because of what they found on google whereas it's wrong. If you use google to Google your symptoms, your mind no go touch ground however it's good to use google to not to be left in the dark.

They prescribed a drug that killed my dad who was suffering from prostate cancer.

After injecting him with it his condition deteriorated and he died after few days.
A doctor in the US after reviewing treatment my late dad received concluded they shouldn't have administered that particular drug.

The annoying part is doctors are always not held accountable and they are always exhibiting nonchalant attitude together with their nurses from hell.

My own experience is infact with a doctor in the U.S. Thank God he didn't get away with it.

Same thing happened to my sister ooo...
I took her to this hospital popular one at Ajao Estate..My sister was having serious pain in the addominal region, she couldn't eat,she kept vomiting everything she ate....
That's when I had to take her to the hospital, this doctor said we should go for scan that he suspected appendicitis We got the result from scan, I asked the sonographer if we should be worried....To my surprise, he told us he didn't see anything abnormal in her stomach...

I went back to Doctor to show result,Doctor said this is a serious case, he told my sister to lie on her back to examine......
To cut the story short, he said we should go deposit like 700k, that was when I asked that if truly the appendix has ruptured, won't it show in the scan? I further went in explaining that what if it's a stomach infection...
That was how I took my sister to another hospital and we were treated for Stomach Infection...
Be Careful out there, and anything you don't understand please consult Google.......

There was a time I had a bulge on my left eye. I googled online and what I saw was similar to a chalazion, every symptoms matched.
When I got to the doctor, he told me I needed to do a scan because it could be attached to my skull and bla bla bla.
I told him I have read about this and I think I have chalazion. He took some minutes to examine again and referred me to an Ophthalmologists. Its a very simple surgery actually, I didnt know why he was talking about scans and all.

So that he can get commission from the laboratory and after two weeks he would ask you to repeat the scan again
