Eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa, can significantly impact oral health, leading to erosion of tooth enamel due to frequent purging behaviors or poor nutrition. Individuals with bulimia may induce vomiting as a means to control weight, exposing their teeth to stomach acids, while those with anorexia may experience enamel erosion due to a lack of essential nutrients.

The continuous exposure of tooth enamel to stomach acids, either through self-induced vomiting or dietary deficiencies, can lead to erosion. Stomach acid is highly acidic and, when frequently brought into contact with teeth, can wear away the protective enamel layer. This erosion leaves teeth vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, discoloration, and increased risk of cavities.

Eating disorders not only impact oral health but also overall well-being. The effects of poor nutrition can weaken the body's ability to fight oral infections and repair tooth enamel, exacerbating dental problems.

Dentists may observe signs of enamel erosion during oral examinations, such as thinning enamel, increased tooth sensitivity, discoloration, or translucent edges on teeth. Managing eating disorders involves seeking professional help from healthcare providers, psychologists, and dentists. Proper treatment involves addressing the underlying causes of the eating disorder, nutritional counseling, and dental care to manage and prevent further erosion, promoting both oral health and overall recovery.
