In a significant crackdown, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made a substantial stride in Kano State, Nigeria, with the arrest of 1,016 suspects and the seizure of a staggering nine tons of illicit drugs in 2023.

Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the Commandant of the NDLEA in Kano State, disclosed to the News Agency of Nigeria that out of the arrested suspects, 40 were females, while 976 were males. Additionally, the agency achieved 102 convictions, secured forfeiture of five vehicles, and had 104 cases pending in court at the time of reporting.

The seized drugs included 6,098kg of Indian hemp, 1,696kg of codeine and tramadol, and 1,335kg of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Moreover, the agency undertook extensive efforts, rehabilitating 70 clients, investigating 598 visa clearance applications, and conducting 245 substance abuse tests, identifying six individuals who tested positive for different drug abuses. Furthermore, 5,000 individuals were sensitized, and Drug Demand Reduction professionals counseled 1,459 persons.

The repercussions of drug abuse were also addressed as the command destroyed more than 15 tons of assorted narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in 2023, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding communities from the grave impacts of drug abuse. Mr. Idris-Ahmad emphasized the command’s dedication to intensifying efforts to dismantle drug networks, rehabilitate those in need, secure convictions, and destroy illicit substances, leaving no room for drug trade to thrive.
