Taiwan’s Presidential Election And The One China Principle by IniAkpanMorgan(m): 3:47pm On Jan 16
Every issue around Taiwan, as long as it concerns the global community, is strictly the internal affairs of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). Whatever turn the recent Taiwan Presidential election has taken, therefore, the fact remains that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of that China. China’s position of upholding the one-China principle is clear, apparent, and will not change.

The international community’s prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and overwhelming adherence to this principle has also not changed. The one-China principle continues to be the solid anchor for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The peaceful reunification of the Chinese people targeted at achieving “One China” remains the aspiration of majority of the Chinese people.

“One China” was the singular goal of the founding fathers of Communist Party of China (CPC) and it continues to be the pursuit of the Party leaders after them. It was for “One China” that the CPC fought and won the major, but tortuous wars against feudalism, imperialism and socioeconomic hegemony, on their path to founding the Chinese nation in 1949.

It was to also address the pursuits of renegade leaders that led the CPC to establish the “One Country, Two Systems Principle” to accommodate the clamour for autonomy in Hong Kong and Macau, the two self-administered autonomous regions of China, as examples of the possibility of the “One China” reunification process.

It is in this light only that China likely views the outcome of the recent Taiwanese Presidential election. President Xi Jinping had, during the 20th National Congress of the CPC, assured that the CPC will implement its overall policy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, and unswervingly advance the cause of national reunification. It was for this reason that Beijing admonished the people in Taipei to vote a leadership that would be sympathetic to the cause of reunification.

President Xi has pledged to continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort. Outside forces and the few who spur separatists tendencies, are therefore noted as the biggest uncertain forces hindering the cross-Straits peaceful situation. President Xi had reconfirmed the strong connection between national reunification and national rejuvenation of the Chinese people, believing that national reunification serves as the political milestone for Chinese national rejuvenation.
