To my fellow nairalanders. Please look carefully at the person you marry. Do not be carried away with flimsy things like unverifiable virginity. Two things you must never take for granted: CHARACTER and FIT. Character embodies things like loyalty, integrity, values, morals, decency and ability to be just. You can see I didn't mention love. The way it has been abused in Nigeria, it is what people use to ruin other people's lives.

Same applies for relationships both friendships and romantic.

"Fit" is match. The ability to complement each other. The match may not he perfect, but you must agree over matters of value, matters of why you are in the relationship, matters of culture, matters of spirituality, matters of family. You must be able to hold each other and move together as a force towards one destination that would benefit both of you. You must be physically, mentally and spiritually fit to understand what the relationship means to you. For some, relationship is for sex. So long as both of them agree, it is between them. They are "fit" for each other. For others, relationship is for "using" the other to climb; if both parties are okay for such, it is fine. For those whose marriages have lasted, they see each other as pillars of support to grow in every way. It also works for their "fit".

Yesterday, Pastor Mike Bamiloye said some women are selfish with their bodies. Some men are also selfish with emotions/care. If two of you cannot see each other as a single unit, if two of you are competing over who is superior in the relationship, if both of you disagree over issues that should hold you together, you two are not fit for each other.

Better not to get married.

We marry this days not out of the will of God or his plan for us but we marry out of our own eye sight and thinking. Example, he is handsome, she is beautiful, she has good shape, she can cook, he doesn't smoke or drink, she acts in a caring manner, he can take care of me and others. Those are the mistakes. Our eyes and emotions deceive and lead us.

We rush into everything thinking 'this is the one'. When God is not involved, those careless human errors are bound to happen and then next is divorce according to humans. Remember God hates putting away! It is till death do part! That's how my Bible puts it to me as a Christian.

Marriage is an institution created by God. So it doesn't function by our human thinking and assumptions. Ask God for direction and his clear will concerning a partner before starting the journey or stepping into it. Most people have left God out of the marriage thing. It is his own institution so don't go into it without with knowledge or living him out of it. It will be hell.

And the worst mistake of a man is getting married to someone who wasn't meant for you. How then do you know if a person was meant for you or not? That is when God comes in for he knows the end even from the beginning, he knows each and everyone of us than we know ourselves.
