You heard it first in benin, does not mean it originated from Benin. It's not a benin word, it's an igbo word.

Well, the treasurer to the Oba of Benin in ancient times was called Obiaza (bearer of treasure).

That word originated from Edo Language. The word Aza mean that long rope that women tie round their waist line where money is save in the market. The rope contain a purse like enclosure for safe keeping of money. AZA is an Edo word.

Aza is an ancient Edo word for reserve/store/safe. I heard it from my nan decades ago.

To "gbe aza (break the safe/store/reserve)" is to break the account at the end of the year when progressive unions and Osusu groups gather money and share.

It has been used in Edo since at least the time of Ogiso Obioye. More than over a thousand years.

Don't let modern ethno-centrism and population politics deceive you.

People can use a word from anywhere when it becomes popular. Remember Davido's mother came from Edo.

Olaza is even a common name for treasurer.
