Gunfire was heard near opposition party's headquarters in the capital N'Djamena on Wednesday

"Sporadic shots were heard on Wednesday in Chad's capital near the headquarters of an opposition party, accused by the government of an overnight attack on the internal security agency's offices which left several dead.

The sound of automatic weapon fire prompted people to leave the area in the centre of N'Djamena where the Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) has its main office and had been surrounded by the army.

Since around midday, the telephone network and internet were disrupted, according to AFP journalists."

Violence and disruption only escalate tensions and hinder progress towards a peaceful resolution.
