That's as far back as 1996 in his video Hit Em Up.

It has been in the market since the time of colonialism.
Colonial masters, missionaries use to wear it, then we wear it to farm, some wear it for fashion , to work ,paramilitary like boys scout boy brigade use it because it is strong and durable .

Yup! You got the historical sequence. I rocked the hugely popular mocassins back in the 1980s right through to the early 1990s when Timberland work boots became fashionable to wear hip hop style. The advent of satellite TVs back then projected hip hop culture worldwide.
