The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka yesterday said a total of 3,364 people were killed in road accident in Nigeria in 2011. The figure indicated a slight reduction in the number of deaths when compared to 4,065 people killed in road accidents in 2010.

The Corps Marshal, represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Motor Vehicle Administration Hamisu Haruna made the remarks during Jumu’at service marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at the National Mosque Abuja. He said the World Health Organization stated that over 1.3 million people are killed through crashes annually.

“This year has recorded over 3,364 deaths on Nigerian roads. The effects of these resultant deaths or injuries are displacement in families as well as increase in n umber of orphans and street children especially if bread winners are involved.” He said the public must make effort towards reducing road crash fatalities by being patient while driving and avoiding over speeding.
