If paypal remains unavailable to Nigerians and Ebay made available, Then it's logical for any Nigerian on ebay to try to coerce foreigners to accept other payment methods. Foreigners see a private message telling them to use an alternate payment method from a Nigerian and they flag it as scam attempts, further damaging the country's reputation. If the ebay company cant get paypal enabled for Nigerians, so why enable ebay in the first place. it's more like tying a child's hands to his seat, placing a dish infront of him and demanding that he eats the food and show some table manners while at it. |

seriously, e be like say some oyinbo no get sense. you cant do anything meaningful on ebay without a paypal account. it's best to disable ebay till paypal is available they were prolly trying to test us |

Was thinking (still thinking) of creating an "ebay nigeria" kinda service. Where users choose what they want on ebay.com, they pay and its delivered to there doorstep via DHL or FEDEX in a few days. . . I know there are many out there offering something similar but in this one users can bid for items on ebay. Just one problem: Nigerian Customs. I have noticed when I buy plenty of a given item on ebay the Nigerian Customs charges some (miscalculated) duty on it. When its one of several items they may not charge any duty. Its not really fixed how those guys operate. Would appreciate any ideas from anyone who really knows how the Nigerian Customs operates as per imports. |

Yup, for those that don't know PayPal is indeed owned by eBay and they have created one of the biggest current monopolies. And no, eBay and PayPal are not your friends; Just wait till they 'limit' then shut down your account for no apparent reason other than your account shows 'excessive risk'. They are trying to gear their services towards the big retailers only like Buy.com and the rest of them. How the hell can you expect a small business like mine to have a reversal rating below 2% (mind you this includes returns, refunds, and charge backs whether is is your fault or not)  ? People buy things everyday on a whim and decide they don't want it anymore tomorrow. For the mathematically challenged, this means that if you sell 100 items and more than 2 have problems of any kind then pray that your account does not get reviewed , |

humblebee: Yes the rate maybe higher in USA and the rate of conviction is higher too, tracing and arresting the suspect will be much much easier compared to Nigeria. Ebay gain more from USA businesses do their business on Ebay than Nigeria, so they have to weigh their options. Our bad reputation is not only on Ebay, other businesses are taking the same harsh measures. Ebay/Paypal will see a backlash from Ebay customers who have suffered in the hands of Nigerian criminals if Paypal re-admit Nigeria with the way things are at the moment. |

I dunno why them paypal peeps still don't want to reconsider Nigeria. As far as I know, cyber crime in Nigeria has largely reduced and i'm talking from on ground experience here. Internet scams still exist in Naija (as they do pretty much everywhere else in the world) but I think it is not as much as it used to be. Oyinbo people sef and their mentality towards Nigeria, do they think we can't change or do they just refuse to believe we can change? |
