Why not install redhat or any other popular linux distro. Secondly, you should read the documentation on the distro website. Learning unix/linux is actually a trivial process. Try the following distro

1. fedora - fedoraproject.org
2. centos - centos.org
3. debian - debian.org

I started using Unix/Linux 2 years ago and I have used to build embedded systems and everything from bandwidth managers to fax machines. So just put your back into it.
