Why! Why! Why! Nigerian Hospital In A Big Disarray! by bamie(m): 2:54pm On Nov 30, 2011
Can someone tell me why Nigerian Hospitals is so miserable?
I was just thinking of how Nigerian Hospitals have increased the mortality rate in the country because of stupid practice.
What do I mean?
Someone had an accident, you rushed them to the hospital (which in advance country you dont do) well! we know we haven't reached that stage yet, but after getting to the hospital, your hope is to get the injured people treated, but no! 90% of Nigerian Hospital will dear not treat the individual without police report, just think about it people, may be i'm wrong, but i think the whole system is wrong from the beginning. What do i mean?
Nigeria Police wont appear in the accident scene within few minutes of an accident (1st problem)
SO NO POLICE REPORT TO BE GIVEN,
Then the (2nd Problem) arises, no emergency ambulance on standby, to rush the individual to the hospital
And then come to (3rd Problem) no one would want to be a good Samaritan who can help save life
Then (4th Problem), no real training and knowledge on first aid on emergency
Then (5th Problem), no doctor would want to admit anyone that is involve in an accident without police report (Stupidity)
I think even if the first four problems are there, the fifth shouldnt be among (why?) because the aim of medical practitioner is to SAVE LIFE and not to Encourage DEATH.Just imagine a doctor saying he doesnt care whether people die! that's crazy and that's how alot of people have lost their life simply because of stupidity on the part of our doctors. cry It's so shameful! angry angry angry
Nigerian government should look into the law preventing doctors from not helping any injured person at any posible way, even as simple as first aid treatment should be done even if there is a risk that the individual might die. It must be looked at that a license of any hospital that fails to admit anyone injured even with (Gun shot wound) shouldnt be admitted should be revoked. Many people have forgotten that those with gunshot wound that might be shot by the police in exchange might still be caught due to the fact that they voluntarily appear in the hospital. Alot of people wont care, they rather thank police for killing them, but the aim is to see evil perpetrators to justice and if law find them guilty fine! the arm of law should make such ones face the consequence of their action.

Please help me out here!
Am i wrong for thinking this way?
If everyone of us can talk about this issue, probably the Senate and the House of Parliament might consider considering this issue that i'm discussing in this forum.

I feel u ma brofer the police report thing is a problem to so many issues in Nigeria. So much that priority is misplaced at all time.

@poster, i share your frustrations. how can you see someone on the brink of death and still have the nerve to request for a police report on what happened? its just clear that human life means absolutely nothing to these people. i believe that senate has outlawed the police report nonsense but hospitals are still adamant on seeing the report before attending to patients. just absurd.

if you have an accident that requires heavy surgery and you are taken to a US hospital; if they realize you have NO insurance, you'd probably be treated the same way.

but at least some first aid will be administered to ease the pain of an accident or gunshot victim. here, they'll just watch the person bleed to death without a police report. how ridiculous is that?

although you are right (in most cases), there are many such cases where the patients have died after being seen by these docs and quickly discharged (simply because they had no insurance)

google PATIENT DUMPING for more info on the subject.

@Op you are very much correct. Even the police force that we issue out the report will also want to see the person first and know if is gun shot or not. Nothing is working in Nigeria. Na education, Police, Health care, Lawyers etc. All we need is prayer and support to our government to succeed, they know all that but is giving them serious problem.

it is obvious you have never been to the usa, so shut up and dont say something you dont know. usa law forbids hospitals from denying emergency care to anyone, regardless of their race, nationality, or ability to pay. if you have no insurance, they will just bill you and try to collect the money owed later

although the law is there, many hospitals DONT abide by it, educate yourself on PATIENT DUMPING bro!
and learn about the MANY cases of death that occurred due to it.
tone being in 2009 when two teens  were sent away due to lack of insurance and one died because of it. the hospital settling the case out of work by paying $100K to the family (Kaiser hospital in santa Clara).

many will be fooling themselves in thinking that they will get proper care in the US (even if they have no coverage) but that is not ALWAYS the case.

@ op I absolutely share in your pain however I tought you are going to talk about something that is is really within the power of the hospital management ( attending to gunshot emergencies). There are a lot of rottenness in our hospital than tthe one you highlighted . Especially unprofessional conduct and ineptitude and mediocrity an too much emphasis on medical rather than health services. Most professionals in Nigeria are basically after the MONEY and not the services and value. shocked shocked shocked shocked angry angry angry angry

I really feel we should have a section on nairaland for name and shame situations. EG hospitals. These people turning you away at the door have names. Write them down and bring them here and let people know. In the future when people want to get a review of doctors to avoid they can come on nairaland and read about it. The same for police officers. I am so sad about the young man that was just shot and killed by cursed police officers. He was someones brother and someone loved him. Only God knows if his family will even ever find out what happened to him. Nigeria is horrible.

START NAMING AND SHAMING THEM

We have had cases here where people have rushed people to the hospital. The next time you come on here to post this please have names and maybe even recorded refussal by these useless health care workers in our hospitals. Nothing will change until the people in Nigeria do something.
Re: Why! Why! Why! Nigerian Hospital In A Big Disarray! by Nobody: 3:05am On Dec 02, 2011

Re: Why! Why! Why! Nigerian Hospital In A Big Disarray! by assetstrap(m): 2:50pm On Dec 02, 2011
'@OP you have raised very serious points not just about Nigerian hospitals but our health system period. In terms of the doctors and health workers is it that all the good professionals are in the diaspora or what? surely that can't be the case, i just think they have the 'Nigerian attitude' of nonchalance and can't be bothered, which is a damn shame. Also there seems to be a lot of mediocre doctors and health workers operating throughout the country. People r not given proper checks and discharged early leading to unnecessary loss of life. These r situations that should be looked at by the medical association if at all it exists. Tell me why all states cannot provide ambulances to reach accident spots on time thereby saving lives and yet some of them can pay millions to send people on pilgrimage to saudi arabia every year ( don't get me wrong nothing wrong with going on pilgrimage, but why should goverment pay for people to on pilgrimage!!! its bananas ). The issue of people not stopping to help is a sad one in our society and reflects badly on all of us myself included, but in saying that there are people out there that do stop and help and i give them all the respect coz naija is a place where do-gooders sometimes become victims. The health system in Nigeria has steadily declined over so many years and yet when i was coming up as a young 'un i remember hospitals like LUTH being very well funded and of good standard, but like i said that was back in the day.

Although you're right, but I have to agree with him, that's what U.S. law says, but it doesn't mean all hospitals abide by the same law. There was a case against Inova hospital here in VA sometimes this year where a patient went to emergency, although two hospital had rejected them, but their claim was that their sickness wasn't life threatening. Bottom line is that most hospitals are still found guilty of violating federal law, although hospitals who do these acts represent a minute % of hospitals in the field.

my brother na so
And i know this will continue for along time to come
health system in this country is on the verge of collapse.its in a state of anomie. we play politics with everything even with our life
common doctor can't work in national except you get a letter from presidency or a senator.
on daily basis best brains are leaving the shores of this country. about 20 of my classmates in medical school are scattered all over the world ;south africa, bostwana,USA UK dermark, and australia.
in my own view all govt hospitals should be privatised and let govt regulate.
let local government handle primary health care well, and state govt- the general hospital
employ more hands and pay well
our legislators are the highest paid in the world so why can't doctors be paid well atleast south african standard (least paid doctor in SA earns 600k per month)
if not even me will not hesistate to leave for greener pasture after my specialist training

I'm glad you brought that out NRI Priest, that practice is contrary to Medical practice, I think many Nigerian cant stand for their right, there should be a campaign that should address this situation, matching to Aso Rock villa making the President, the Senate President aware of this situation might bring their eyes into what they suppose to look at and hopefully them might address it.

If lawmakers have waived it, it might not start to work until 2099, I'm sorry to say that, you should ask, did they put any serious obligation to support the new policy? Have they thought of helping the doctors to be saved if they help people to gain back their life. Well, it's not surprising to see most of the lawmakers travelling overseas for mere checkup, i'm so furious about the whole system, angry
