you are given 9 balls of thesame colours and size. 8 of these balls weigh 9.8kg and the last one weighs 9.9kg thats a difference of 0.1kg. RULES: you are given a weighing balance with two side of which you must use ONLY TWICE. question: how would you pick out that one ball that is 9.9kg? |

Divide the nine balls into groups of three. Then weigh the first group against the second. If they balance out then the heavier ball is in the third group, if not, then take the heavier group that tips the scale. Select two balls out of it and weigh against each other, if they balance, then the third ball is the heavier ball, if not, then the heavier of the two is the ball you looking for  amirite?? |

another attempt: divide the balls into 2, 2, 2, 1 balls. Take the first and second 2 balls. Place them on opposite sides of the scale. If they balance out, then your ball is in the last 2,1 balls. Then take the next two balls and place each one on opposite sides of the scale, if they balance out, then your ball is the 1 ball. If they don't, then your ball is the heavier of this third group of 2 that displaces scale. If the first two group of 2's don't balance out, then your ball is in the heavier bunch. Put each one on opposite side of scale, and the heavier is your ball. Eventually, you'd have used scale only twice! |
