The House of Representatives has directed downward review of fees and levies paid by students of Law schools in Nigeria.

Chairman House committee on Justice, Rep. Ali Ahmed (PDP, Kwara) who gave the order yesterday lamented that the burden of infrastructural development of the schools were being borne by the students as part of their tuition fees and ordered “de-freezing of further increase.”

Ahmed told the visiting officials of the Legislative Advocacy Working Group of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) led by Okey Wali (SAN) that the inadequate funding of law schools affected the quality of students they produce.

As a long-term measure, the committee according to the lawmaker was sponsoring an amendment to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETF) to accommodate law schools as one of the beneficiaries of the fund.

He further said that the council on legal education was draining the finance of law schools because of the too many members that usually attends its meetings.

Speaking earlier, leader of the delegation, Okey Wali disclosed that NBA will offer free legal services to the National Assembly and requested that they be given an office accommodation to open their liaison office and called for the quick passage of the justice sector reforms bill currently pending before the legislators.
