(Sorry guys for the earlier mixed up the guy was coming from Abuja to Lagos not Calabar to lagos.Moderator please note the change)This is really a true life incident not a make up one.

Three days ago I was able to get in touch with a friend of mine who has been missing for almost four weeks. Though his voice was still shivering as he narrate the incident to me on phone yesterday.

He was on his way from Abuja to Lagos on a night bus (Ekele Dili Chuku) when at Ibilo their bus was attack by rubbers/ritualist. According to him there is no way anyone in the bus could escape as the driver bump into them suddenly.

According to him, they came into the bus through the two entrance/exit available, line them up outside and start separating them base on the cash they have at hand. Those with three hundred thousand one side and others with very little cash to the other side.

Latter they start asking them how much is in their account, what kind of business do they do and how much comes into their account daily. My friend who is a final year Law student only has six thousand naira as cash and eighty thousand naira in his GTbank account.
He said due to fear several passengers voice out the truth, the amount they have in the bank, the amount they are expecting in their account the next day or days after. In particular a man said he has something like N4.2 million naira in his account. They collected their ATM cards, pin and phones.
Those that claim they have money in their account and those that they suspected that are lying (my friend inclusive) were packed inside an Hiace bus and drove like three hours to the middle of nowhere.

On arriving at their destination they met several other victims, the houses are made of mud with several guards armed with heavy weapon. My friend spent ten days with them, each day they withdraw maximum amount allowable through their ATM and switch on their phones at certain time of the day to see if there is credit Alert from their banks.
On the tenth day they notice that no money is coming into his account and four others so they decided to do away with them.
He woke up to find himself and four others in an hospital two hours away from Calabar and two of whom are died. According to the doctor, that would be the tenth day since a Good Samaritan who found them along the road and brought five of them to the hospital but unfortunately two of them couldn’t make it. He saw the Good Samaritan who also said that the hospital refused to accept them for treatment until he deposited fifty thousand naira each for the five victims.

Anyway they are to be in Lagos latter today, the doctor refer them to an hospital here in Lagos for full treatment and to completely flush out the chemical they inhale that make them unconscious or expected to kill them eventually.
I believe others are still there most especially the man with N4.2 million in his account, you know how long it will take to withdral the whole amount with ATM card.

My advice to everyone is to try and avoid night travelling or anything risky in order to survive, sometimes life makes it look as if you don’t have a choice and sometimes seems as if it’s a life time opportunity that is coming so you just have to travel at night or do some risky things but when incident like this happen we look back, bite our finger and then knew that we had a choice.

Those so-called Nigerian "luxurious buses" in fact offer a "luxury" ride on the highway to hell, for all who are still foolhardy enough to board them at night, when the evil spirits occupy all roads in Nigeria.

Am wondering what a man with N4.2million in his bank account be doing in a bus from Lagos to Calabar, let alone a "Night Bus".
Its a very sad ordeal. Imagine the extent robbers can go to have money. Desperate Measures.

The man with N4.2m in is account, must be a very stingy man, because i believe he choosed to take a cheaper and more risky way to travel. If not, what stoped him from catching a flight to lagos.

How come you guys always make a ghost decision! The money could only be contract capital paid into his account by a company or an individual. It could be a loan. So if you were given a loan of 4.2million, you would take 100,000naira there just for flight? As a business man, I would not spend 100k on flight if I have 4.2million, I wouldn't take that risk. I would rather allow the so called armed robbers take it away from me since its 1 in 1000 risk! No wonder most rich Nigerians end up being broke a.s/s- Mismanagement of funds! I've seen a Nigerian having a net worth of 100million and flying a first-class to Australia; absolute ridiculous!

So people still travel at night? In this time and age with all the bad roads and numerous stories of horror, especially the one that occurred 2 years ago at Benin-Ore road where people were crushed after being laid on the road by robbers?

Naija people...stubborn to the very end.
Re: Experience On Night Travelling, New Dimension To Robbery Due To Cashless Society by yuzedo: 10:11am On Mar 29, 2012
First of all, naming Ekene Dili Chukwu in this post is ethically wrong as it can lead to decreased patronage (De-marketing).
Secondly, it has been observed that ekene doesn't ply Calabar - Lagos (i will have to verify that one though)
Lastly, it is easy to punch holes in this story i'm sorry to say. Are you saying the missing people weren't reported missing to the police? And the police is so inept that they can't/didn't track all incoming/outgoing logs on their phones to notice that text messages (debit alerts) are delivering everyday to the mobile? And hasn't your friend reported to the police and have them determine the ATM location(s) where the withdrawals were made so that CCTV records can expose the criminals?? Well, na Naija we dey, and na Naija police. . But still, na pinch of salt i go use hol' dis gist. . undecided

You are correct. I noticed that too. Ekene dili chuckwu dont ply that route, if they do... maybe they started recently. (But i doubt)

[b]Get your facts straight. Flights from lagos to Calabar wont cost you up to N30k (at the most), And besides, with N4.2m at his disposal, why would he be willing to take the risk of a night journey if he can spend less than N60k to and fro via flight?

Well, uuhhhnnnnn. I do not really know what to say.

Granted that the story line could be fictional, the playout is not impossible. All underscores the dangers in night travels

I remember my Add Maths Teacher in secondary school, travelled home for xmas/end of year 1986. He came back to tell stories of how their luxury bus was hijacked and diverted into the bush, and everyone stripped completely naked. Some women were raped and according to him 3 of them virgins. Before the robbers left, they decided to give every passenger a mark for rememberance by matcheting them at their choice place. He got his by his left arm.

A very close friend is a lecturer at the law school @ abuja. He was very fortunate that when armed robbers were shooting senselessly to stop the bus, the passenger sitting just beside him was hit by a bullet & died instantly. It took him several days to come out of the shock.

The storyline of a third fellow, a sister inlaw, was a fortunate one for her. The escorts in the bus were able to regain control and get them out of the danger zone.

Few words for the wise

one's safety in Nigeria lies in the Lord's hands, whether u travel by air or land, night or day, this country of ours is a joke.. no one is accountable, in developed countries the police, and the management of the bus company would be held accountable.. i have never experienced a robbery of any sort and i am in my mid thirties, Lord knows i am grateful for that but this country offers no security for its citizens, its really disheartening that we are clearly heading no where, the signs are one the wall, Nigeria is spiraling out of control. eventually some north Afrikaans terrorist group will cease power in Nigeria the way it is in Lebanon, and these so called pastors and Christians would all too soon convert to isalm to save their necks, then Nigeria would be a forgotten land like Niger, because no body in the world right now takes Nigeria seriously any more havntu noticed that issues that happen in Nigeria are no more reported by reputable news networks, except the likes of Sahara... i guess eventually we would be singing a requiem for Nigeria

This is scary story!
Someone made a comment that Ekene... desn't operate from Calabar. you may wanna checheck it out with Ekene... to know if any of their buses was robbed recently. Otherwise you can take it that your friend was having a good time with his secret lover all the time he was missing.

Some chaps with ten times that amount travel by night bus. In nigeria day time travel does not take robbery out of the equation.

you almost score a point on management aspect but shot yourself in the foot in the intelligence aspect. the man wit the 4.2mills or 100mills in the bank aint stupid to either take a bus or a first class flight. For all i knw d money aint supposed to be static since u don't knw how much income enters his account even as he's in the first class cabin.
