FG Reverses Decision On Uniabuja - Prof. Ruqayyatu

Federal Government has lifted the suspension earlier placed on four of the programmes of the University of Abuja as a result of protests by students of the university yesterday at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i. The students stormed the ministry in their hundreds around 10am in their laboratory coats and carrying placards, demanding specifically that the minister reverses her earlier pronouncement on the suspension of the programmes and ensure provision of necessary equipment and facilities needed for accreditation.

Thereafter, a meeting with five student representatives each from all four of the affected departments - medical sciences, veterinary medicine, engineering and agriculture, the Vice Chancellor Professor James Adelabu, executive secretaries of the National Universities Commission and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TET Fund), the Permanent Secretary Dr. Ben Ibe and the minister held for four hours.

The minister of education had no business announcing the suspension of courses as that is under the jurisdiction of the NUC. Its saying the right thing in the wrong way - in the end its the system that is ridiculed. All potential JAMBITES should take note of the situation and leave that university alone especially the affected courses or you will enter what we call one chance.

are the FG certain that those courses are worth giving a pass mark. Because we don't want fake doctors and engineers in the society. They should uphold the suspension until they meet the standard.

I would rather have them transfer the student into other schools than remove the suspension.

I LIKE THIS. THEY SHOULD ALL FIGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS! WHAT CAUSED THE COURSES NOT TO BE ACCREDITED SHOULD INSTEAD BE TACKLED AND HAVE THEIR FACILITIES UPGRADED OR REPLACED. PERIOD

They can't makes the knowledge gained and time spent by students amount to waste...with the high rate of unemployment and the not-very-good quality of education we have; this would only make things worse!

This doesn't change anything. These courses haven't been accredited by their individual professional bodies. Those students to me are just wasting their time there. The wise among them should be thinking of transferring to institution's where they are accredited.

By reversing the decision of the experts. Nigerian government is trying to tell us that they are EITHER more competent than those experts in their specialty OR that those experts are simply incompetent in their field. This is exactly the problem with Nigeria. Different rules for different folks. I'm especially worried of Med/Surg Dept. 'cause they will end up producing dangerous doctors. Schools lose accreditation. It occurs everywhere. It has occured in UNN, UNIBEN, UNILAG, UNIBADAN, etc. Why should the case of UNIABUJA be different? The aim is to enact corrective measures to ensure that the highest standard of professionals are produced in those fields. This aint beefing. It has little to do with politics. The experts are drawn from different tribes. They have distinguished themselves in that specialty over the years. Government shouldn't interfere in their job. Government is simply setting a dangerous precedence. Well, I'm not surprised because Nigeria is run by incompetent people. UNIABUJA being close to the seat of power doesn't make them untouchable. This is a bad day for academic excellence in Nigeria. SMH

She didn't just call off the suspension. You guys should read everythng up there before lambasting her. She consulted with the NUC executive secretary and other stakeholders. This is how to manage crises
