Now let us go through these jobs one after the other to see how they look like and where you can fit in.

1. Be an About.com Guide: write in-depth articles, blog posts and a weekly newsletter, and moderate a discussion forum on a particular topic, ranging from health care and parenting issues to advice on travel, cooking, technology and hobbies.

About.com Guides are freelance writers who work online and set their own schedule. In most cases, Guides will be expected to create eight articles per month. In a small number of cases, when a Guide will be more involved in updating existing content, the minimum number of new articles can be lowered to four. In addition, Guides are required to write blog posts, moderate user generated content and write a weekly newsletter, among other things. About sixty percent of About.com Guides are part-time working about ten to fifteen hours per week.

The About.com compensation plan offers a guaranteed monthly payment for content produced, as well as incentives for performance and support from their editorial team. A Guide is guaranteed a per-article rate for a contractual maximum number of new articles. About.com Guides get a guaranteed base payment of $675 per month for the first two years, and then $500 per month thereafter.

On average an About.com Guide in his or her first two years will make about $1,000 a month. The average Guide compensation is around $2,000 a month and some Guides earn over $100,000 a year.

All potential About.com Guides go through a tough two-part online orientation and evaluation program, learning about their editorial standards while writing articles and blog posts and publishing them on a test site with their publishing tools. When About.com evaluates potential Guides they look for writing ability, web formatting comprehension, topic expertise, desire to educate and passion.

During the month long evaluation you'll be evaluated by an About.com editor who'll give you comments on your work before making a final decision at the end of the process.

2. Be an About.com Topic Guide: Topic Guides write content on topics that are more specialized than what About.com Guides cover. Unlike About.com Guides, Topic Guides aren't responsible for a weekly newsletter or moderating a discussion forum.

All Topic Guides are expected to write between six and ten articles a month at an average of 600 words. Topic Guides are also expected to promote their content via a blog.

In their first two years, Topic Guides are paid by the article. In subsequent years if the Topic Site grows, About.com also pays Topic Guides for page views above and beyond the minimum pay per article.

3. Be an About.com Video Producer: produce premium video content, such as cooking a delicious dessert for your kids or trying a fun new workout. About.com pays a flat fee of $250 per accepted HD video.

About.com videos are typically 1.5 to 3 minute instructional, featuring quality, expert hosts, and using original video footage shot by the producer. The majority of the video should be b-roll (supplemental or alternate footage intercut with the main shot), not talking heads.
