George Zimmerman was granted $150,000 bond at a hearing today. The prosecutor, Bernie De La Rionda, had requested alternately no bail or $1,000,000 bail, but refused to provide any evidence of his probable guilt, evidence of his being a flight risk, or evidence that he was a danger to the community. The prosecutor also tried to dredge up the “Zimmerman hit a cop” myth (disproved) and his supposed “violent tendencies” as shown by the domestic violence restraining order filed against him by his girlfriend (they filed mutual orders against each other).

Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, attacked almost everything in the charging affidavit and neither the prosecutor nor his chief witness, investigator Dale Gilbreath, could come up with any sort of convincing argument to support it. Instead it was largely a rehashing of what they said in the affidavit to begin with.
It’s clear to most experts at this point that this a political cover prosecution (as if it wasn’t clear the minute the charges were filed). The case is extremely weak and the prosecutors are largely holding their case back to try to railroad George Zimmerman as much as possible before Florida law forces them to hand over all their evidence to his attorney.

In a surprise move, Zimmerman took the stand and directly apologized to Trayvon Martin’s family. He said he didn’t know how old Martin was or that he was unarmed. He also said he was sorry for the loss of their son.
