Over seven students of the Ebonyi state University are allegedly feared dead and
over were 30 seriously injured when anti-riot policemen opened fire on students
who were protesting over scarcity of water in the Presco Campus of the
university for over three months last Friday, in Abakaliki, the state capital.
A source, who does not want to be named, told Blueprint that police not only
killed over seven students, saying: “ As I am talking to you over 50 students are
being detained by the state police command on the orders of the governor; and
over 30 were seriously wounded.”
The source recalled that two weeks ago, the students at the main campus of the
university had protested over scarcity of water in the campus, and total black out
with government promising Heavens, but to no avail.
Blueprint gathered that students at about 5.30am last Friday started shouting
“there will be no lecture today,” “enough is enough.”
A student source hinted that between 7am and 8am, students gathered carrying
lanterns on their heads shouting, “we are not going to take exam because
nobody will pass; no more lectures until we can bathe; there is no water in the
campus, enough is enough,” the source said.
Continuing, the source said that as a result of the death of the students, the
management of the university had directed students to vacate the three
campuses of the university within 24 hours pending the determination of the
damages.
When the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. John Elu, was
contacted on telephone he declined comment as text messages and calls put to
his cell phone were not returned.
