A giant super moon lit up the sky last night, an annual cosmic spectacle caused by the moon swinging closer to Earth. As the moon orbits the earth, there are specific times when it comes closer to and farthest away from the planet earth. This phenomenon is known as a perigee full moon which causes higher tides and made the moon appear up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal. The moon’s distance from the earth varies because it follows and elliptical orbit. Full moon shines when the moon is closest and Saturday night was what we experienced at 8:34pm. The moon was at its perigee and thus very close to earth about 221,000 miles away compared to an average distance of around 240,000 miles, making it the closest one to the earth all year about 3% closer than any other approach in 2012. Dr Robert Massey, of the Royal Astronomical Society, said: “The moon is always beautiful and a full moon is always dramatic.” Scientists have also dismissed notions that the phenomenon could cause bizarre behaviors or natural disasters.
