Your First Cinema Experience. by Nobody: 7:32pm On May 25, 2012
In Nigeria, the only way to get a hollywood movie (or tv series) was to go to your local pirate and pray he has it. If it's a recently released one, you'll have to wait for like 8 months to a year because the ones you'll see are recorded directly from the cinema screen. And if you've experienced this you'll agree with me that your 200 bucks have been wasted.
But recently, with the influx/trickling in of cinemas, some with 3D screens, you get to watch hollywood movies the day they are released worldwide, in the US, or even sometimes before they are released in the US (see The Avengers).
Now, my question is: what was the first movie you watched on the big screen, where, and how did you feel the first time you stepped into the cinema?
_
I'll go first:
It was in february this year, at Genesis Deluxe Cinemas at the Polo Park Mall in Enugu. So it happened that that was my first time going to the mall and I had no idea there was a cinema there, so it came as a surprise when a lady gave me a flyer advertising Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, and I was like "really?"
So I went up the escalator to the third floor and lo and behold there were movie posters. There were posters for Safe House, Darkest Hour, a cardboard, six-foot tall "poster" of Journey 2, and some others I can't remember.
So I bought a ticket for Safe House, starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, for 600 bucks (it was wednesday so there was "movie subsidy" ). Then I was directed across the lobby to their food stand where I bought a tub of popcorn for 500 bucks and a bottle of chilled coke for 200 bucks (kinda expensive right?). I was then directed to screen two, after a worker there tore off a stub from my ticket (and they accept cards, every store there does).
So in I went, down the sound-proofed corridor, through carpeted walls and floors, into the huge hall. Wow! That was some big-arse screen. The pictures were huge and clear. I saw every wrinkle and pore on Denzel's face. It was amazing. The the audio? One word: booming. In my house, I took care to turn down the volume so as to not disturb the 'rents and neighbours. But that volume . . . that was the loudest I had ever watched a movie. The floor was literally vibrating with every explosion (and in that movie, there were lots of explosions).
So there I sat, in a highly air-conditioned hall ('room' doesn't do it justice), watching 15-foot tall people destroying 20-foot tall cars, and munching away on my popcorn.
And now, you could call me a "series regular" to the cinema.
So, what's your tale?

Hmmm. . . lemme see . . .
My experience's almost the same as yours:
Went to the [same] mall to buy some DVD's and saw the cinema adjacent the media shop. Was elated 'cause they were showing Battleship (and I really wanted to see the movie) so I used my DVD money to pay for tickets.
Oh boy come see screen. Had never seen a screen so big! The audio was BOOM[/b].
Overall it was a great experience, and I've returned 6 more times for different movies.

Mine was at Genesis in Lekki.

Being a struggling filmmaker, I had always loved watching goodd Nollywood films. So my first visit to Lagos in a long while, and I was lucky Ije: The Journey was showing at the same period.

So I went and saw Ije. It was really amazing. Second Nollywood film I was seeing in years. Trailer for Grown-ups was on before the actusl movie. I went back next day to see it.

Was irritating at first. People everywhere and some of them think cinema is a place to hangout and make noise, thereby interrupting my movie watching experience. Then there those ones that can't stay 5 mins without checking their phone. Backlight is distracting. Humanoids. Ughh. I like to watch on my TV with no one around to make noise. I've watched in all kinds of cinemas, only been impressed by a few like the IMAX Dislike those glasses but too crowded for me. I like those ones that sits only like 20 people. There are movies i prefer to watch on the big screen though. And premieres too. Gotta go to the cinema then.

I've never been to the cinemas before and some people think i'm bush because of that. What exactly goes on in a cinema apart from watching movies and chopping popcorn with bottle of coke. So, if i can do and get all this in the comfort of my home, doesn't that render it redundant?

My first cinema experience was frustruating to say the least. I went with my ex, just after we'd agreed to stop dating (a decision I grudgingly acceded to)... We entered, she asked where we should sit, foolishly, I sed we should go to the back, not knowin back seats are reserved for Hot young couples to make out. No sooner had d film started, my silly ex slept off, I started hearing squirms and moans ere and dere. Kissing, smoooching, romancing, to my left, right, front, back!!! I was left all alone to experience what, till today remains the most "sexually-frustruating" 2hours of my entire life!

Nah trust me its not just that.

The screen is way bigger, the sound system could actually make you go deaf, the AC?oh well i know its cooler than the one in our house undecided, its just fun,i may not really be able to explain it well and hey sometimes you get to see some Hot people doing some kind things thinking nobody notices.

The only thing i don't like about a cinema is that, they don't remind a part of the movie you missed, so for someone like me who loves to hear every single word said when watching a movie, its really annoying trying to whisper to my neighbor"please what did he\she just say"? grin

well as a kid i rem goin to casino cinema then in yaba or so, all i can rem of the movie is a scene where one lady pushed her hobby that was on a wheel chair into a swimming pool . And this days well, i just go to d cinema not to actually go see the movies but also to do window shopping cool.. and to browse, wen i say browse i mean to see all those razz, puffin gehls in xmas and nu year clothes.. wink.... acting like sey dem no dey chop amala, undecidedand like sey dem no dey shit. undecided.. as an artist and a creative mind, these scenes form strings of inspiration at a later tym.
Aside that, i like to watch the smally boys forming big boys with their wenches, or piece of skin........seeing them spending the money thy may or may not havc, gvs me a lot of humour and smfin to write abt smday.
and finally.....if i like staying at a lonely wing of the cinema with a new cath and doin hanky panky....adventure tins. grin EOS

My first cinema experience was an exciting one, that was at silverbird. The large screen was awesome.I remember going to the cinema with a guy(his first time) and after the movie while people were leaving,he sat comfortably munching his popcorn waiting for the next movie to begin.when i told him it was over,he said,he told the N1500 payment was for the whole day(see disappointment on the guy`s face,i could not stop laughing)

My first time of been in a cinema was 25.12.2009 in Budapest Hungary to watch "AVATAR" in 3D. i was not comfortable at first cus i was the only one among my friends who hasn't been there, i kept calm n rolled along as per the smart Nigerian girl...it was amazing sitting at the front row, with large size salted popcorn n a medium size sprite. The pictures where baffling and Massively clear,as if someone would come out to hug you, i shifted back a couple of time with the feeling of someone going to touch me, the sound was superb. i had a nice time, the feeling was so real, compared to the one i do have while watching with my lappy. grin
