Ikem watched from his post as a procession of tanks, army jeeps and trucks descended the hill. The rolling wheels of the tanks fascinated him. He fiddled with the remote control in his hand and smiled wryly. The new Biafran invention had arrived with catastrophic effect. Since the fall of Portharcourt, he had risen to the rank of a sergeant. Their decimated troops had returned without a commander and the hard reality of having lost the war began to down on them. That was until the invention of the great Ogbunigwe ''killer in masses'' nicknamed Ojukwu bucket by the Nigerians. It's usage at the Abagana sector was so effective that it wiped out a whole batalion. From his altitude, Ikem had a commanding view of the terrain. The procession drew nearer and nearer until they were some yards away. He felt the tempo of his heartbeat increase rapidly, as he began to have doubt on the efficacy of the ogbunigwe. He knew it would be extremely hard even almost impossible, for him to be detected in his well camouflaged hideout. His green army uniform blended with the heavily-leaved branches of the tree.minutes trickled in to seconds while he waited. He held his breath as he expected the first seth of landmines to off. Nothing happened. He became alarmed. Has the Ogbunigwe failed them? It was too scary a thought to contemplate. Maybe the captain had made a mistake somehow. He reassured himself. He was to detonate his own Ogbunigwe immediately after the captain's to achieve the desired result. Without the Ogbunigwe they had got no chance against the federal forces; they were only an assault group of soldiers laying on ambush to finish-off what would be left of their wreckage. Their mission was about to flop. The pilot tank stopped to remove the last barricade. He looked at the tree were the captain was supposed to be, but as his own tree was so heavily-leaved that he could not even make out his outline. Again his eyes darted to the procession, the monstrous looking tank was now beyond the range of the captain's Ogbunigwe. The large number of soldiers in the trucks frightened him and on their shoulders hung chains of ammunition with sophisticated machine guns pointing through the iron bars of the trucks. There were no infantry-men going before the pilot tank to ascertain if there was danger ahead. Ikem thought this was careless of them, or maybe they expected no resistance from the Biafrans of were too sure of themselves to crush any obstacle on there way. Ikem took one last look at the remote control and with trembling hands he pressed the button hard and waited, scarcely breathing. Then came tremendous explosions. It hit the big van in the middle, and it rocked and exploded in a ball of fire. The wheel of the pilot tank broke into fragments, the whole lot of the army jeep behind the van was thrown into the air where it exploded like a box of cardboard. The suddenness of the explosions did not give the drivers of the trucks ample time to apply the brakes as they all sheepishly drove into the conflagration. Shrapnels flew in different directions. Ikem crashed to the ground. Biafrans opened fire on the Nigerians, closing in on them, Ikem searched for his rifle. Unable to find it....,
