Why Is Corn Being Sold For N50? by Alpha2k(m): 5:46am On Jul 23, 2012
It is disturbing to see maize being sold for about N50 when the cost of producing a standard cob of fresh maize on the farm is N6.

My expectation is that having charged marketers N6 to grow a standard cob of maize, giving an investment period of below 4 months, a 100% profit on investment is ok. Making it available to consumers at N20 or worst N25.

If that Corn was parcel in waterproof and a Made in EU with a price tag of 400 , you will rush it.
Imagine the cost of production N6. After subsidy, do u know how much it cost to transport this products from the farm to where you can see it?

@ op, hope you are not complaining 'coz you ve not considered other factors. When produce @ N6, have u considered transportation, cost of boiling or roasting it, then d time factor, or are u saying your time is not worth anything?
Sure I find corn @ N50 way too much but when I think of the above variable I ll have no choice than to buy.
Btw can u expanciate on producing corn @ N6, I might be interested.

What i do is grow maize for marketers @ N6/standard size. We agree on quantity eg. 50,000 standard size. 50,000xN6 =N300,000. A deposit is made for land preparation, planting, weed control & fertilzer. Balance paid at havest time. Farm site is in ogun state. Transportation of harvest cost about N25,000 depending on quantity & distance expecialy lagos. You can reach me on 08062408926. Austin.

It sells for N50 only in cities, especially Lagos. Same is sold for N20 in my Kwara or any other rural area. Just as industrial products are also less expensive in cities, Lagos in particular, compared to rural areas.

Have you factored in the cost of transportation across our horrendous roads from the interior farms where corn is produced in large quantities to the city where you eat it? Considering that it has passed through at least 4 hands in the channel of distribution before it gets to you?

The real cost goes into transport. If we had functional rail lines, such farm produce should be transported by rail and not by road. This is where your government needs to step up its game, not engaging in propaganda like "GEJ eats cassava bread". Meaning what?

Mr Poster, you are not serious at all angry you 4 ask mr jona why d price of fuel b N97, or why him wife dey speak bad english. in fact they shud increase the price; that's if the majority of the profit will eventually end up in the hands of the poor farmers who sowed the seeds in the first place. wink

I agree with you Stagger. Above all; the middle men/women make all the profit while the farmers remain impoverish.

I completely disagree with u, I ones farmed with my grand ma,u did a wrong calculation because u did not add labour, fertiliser, transport etc. Pls check well its more than that, unless its commercial production.
