Nigeria preview for Week 17

Kwara United v Sharks

In their last three games, Kwara United are yet to win and it must be a source of concern for coach Kadiri Ikhana. And he will be keen to see his side return to winning ways against Sharks at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu. Sharks have won just once on the road all season and have picked just a point in four of this same game in the past. The Afonja Warriors will struggle but should get all points.

Prediction: 1 – 0

Dolphins v Bukola Babes

This is the star game of the week, as first placed side face third placed. Surprisingly in 720 minutes, newcomers, Bukola Babes, have not lost a game. Coincidentally, the last time the Babes lost it was by a lone goal to Sharks in Port Harcourt on December 18, 2010. For Bukola Babes this is going to be a massive test, as they visit the Garden City for the second time this season. The odds favour Dolphins but Bukola Babes will fancy their chance.

Prediction: 2 – 1

Crown FC v Enugu Rangers

The Flying Antelopes’ defensive approach has been responsible for their poor form on the road. Crown Football Club, on the other hand, won at Plateau United last weekend and will look to continue from that winning position. The Ajilete Valiant should coast to a win in this first meeting between both sides.

Prediction: 2 – 0

Sunday, February 20, 2011

Warri Wolves v Niger Tornadoes

Since their name was changed from NPA to Warri Wolves, Niger Tornadoes have never picked a point in Warri. Last season, this game ended 2 – 1 in favour of Wolves and Paul Aigbogun’s men look poised to inflict another defeat on Tornadoes this season.

Prediction: 3 – 1

Heartland v Plateau United

Plateau United are on a miserable streak of eight runs without a win and little wonder they handed their head coach, Ndubuisi Nduka, a suspension. Bitrus Bewarang takes charge of his first game and it starts with a difficult trip to Heartland. The last time both sides met in this same fixture was on February 29, 2004 and Heartland then known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale won by a lone goal.

Prediction: 1 – 0

Lobi Stars v 3SC

Last season in this corresponding fixture, Lobi Stars won by two-nil and it looks so possible that they will grab all points in this game. This is because Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) have turned themselves to a one-man team by depending solely on suspended Gbolahan Salami when the likes of Raheem Owolabi, Chima Akas, Olumide Adigun and Taofeek Adepoju have saved them the blushes in a few games this season.

Prediction: 1 – 0

Ocean Boys v Zamfara United

The form guide of 2006 champions, Ocean Boys, have improved in the last five round of matches and definitely they look good too go against Zamfara United. Chigozie Christopher will be the centre of focus when Zamfara United come calling following his mid-week performance against Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) Football Club.

Prediction: 2 – 0

Sunshine Stars v Kano Pillars

This is the biggest clash on Sunday. In eight head-to-head meeting between the two sides since 2003, Kano Pillars have edged Sunshine Stars with four wins to two. But based on their current home form Sunshine Stars are tipped to win this compared to Pillars that have won just once on the road (against Juth FC) this term.

Prediction: 2 – 1

Juth FC v Enyimba

Juth FC may have sacked their coaching staff, it will not deter the champions, Enyimba, from picking all points. The Healers may be the home side in this tie but they will find it tough to handle the Peoples Elephant, who are now in their elements to win matches irrespective of the name of the ground.

Prediction: 0 – 2

Kaduna United v Gombe United

Gombe United go into this match without a win in five games as well as a poor form in away games this season. It is difficult to see where Gombe United’s goal(s) will come from considering that they have not won or picked a point in Kaduna in over five years now.

Prediction: 2 – 0

– Good evening and welcome to MTNFootball's live coverage of the international friendly between Nigeria and Sierra Leone live from Lagos.

– There is a great atmosphere at the 26,000 seater Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

– Though not a packed stadium as yet, the air is full of excitement and passion as the two teams file out for the match.

– The home team are turned out in all-green with white trimmings, while the Leone Stars are in all-blue with white strips.

– Legendary Mohammed Kallon will line up for Sierra Leone, who arrived late for this game after they lost their way to the match venue and the kick-off for this game had to be moved by 15 minutes.

– The national anthem of the visiting team is now being played as the Leone put hand to chest in respect.

– Now the national anthem of Nigeria,

– Debut boys Emenike, Joel Obi and Michael Odibe sing along to the anthem.

– Routine handshakes among the two teams now and the Leone Stars pose for the photographers.

– The skippers of both teams exhange pennants and we are about to get cracking now. The atmosphere is really electric as the Eagles move up to acknowledge the cheers of the fans.

– Traditional prayer huddle by both teams before the kick-off. A minute's silence for late Nigeria international Uche Okafor, who died recently at his base in the United States of America. Rest in perfect peace Uche Okafor,

1’ – Sierra Leone kick off this friendly.

2’ – The Eagles begin to build up from the defence. Ahmed Musa is fouled by a Leone Star, free kick to the home team.

2’ – Taye Taiwo's cross is cleared out of danger as the Eagles attack from the blast of the whistle.

3’ – Sierra Leone attack but goalkeeper Aiyenugba tips the ball for a corner after a tricky cross. The visitors are not here for a picnic!

4’ – Corner kick for Nigeria, taken by Joel Obi.

5’ – Sierra Leone are quick to the ball. Taiwo forces a second corner for Nigeria.

6’ – Shot by Taiwo but the goalkeeper manages to get a hand to it. What a shot!

7’ – Joel Obi takes a free kick on the edge of the box for Nigeria but Sierra Leone clear their lines again.

8’ – Osaze is called offside, relief for the visitors.

9’ – Peter Utaka swings a pullout but Emenike fails to make full contact to the ball. What a miss!

10’ – The pressure is on Sierra Leone. It's already a very competitive encounter, Utaka is brought down on his way to goal on the edge of the box.

11’ – Taiwo looks to take the free kick. But its Osaze who finally takes the kick and the Sierra Leone goalie saves a second attempt.

12’ – Utaka is brought down inside the box, but the referee says play on,

13’ – Utaka was hesitant, yet another chance lost by Nigeria. The blistering pace of Ahmed Musa is giving the Sierra Leone defence a cause for concern.

14’ – Penalty! Nigeria finally get a call in their favour after a Nigerian striker is brought down by David Simbol.

14’ – Simbo is also booked for protesting the call.

15’ – the match, the Sierra Leone goalie hardly moves as Taiwo tucks it away.

16’ – Sierra Leone fight back as they initiate another attack.

18’ – Emenike looks good as he flies past down the left flank but his final effort is scrambled away to safety by the goalie.

19’ – Almost immediately, Aiyenugba's clearance is latched on to by Sierra Leone, but it misses the target narrowly.

20’ – Leone Stars get a free kick on the Eagles box after Ajilore fouls.

20’ – Skipper Sherif Suma or Kallon to take free kick, but it's Kallon that finally takes the kick which is blocked to the relief of the home fans.

21’ – The game is being played at a high tempo. Sherif Suma looks good for the Leone Stars, he's very comfortable on the ball.

23’ – Emenike looks hurt and the game is temporarily halted.

23’ – The Turkey-based striker is stretchered off and the game continues,

24’ – The Eagles keep possession.

26’ – Utaka fouls and a free kick is awarded to Sierra Leone deep inside their area.

27’ – Joseph Yobo conceeds a throw-in midway through the Nigerian territory.

28’ – Debutant Joel Obi looks very comfortable on the ball as the tempo appears to have petered down a bit.

29’ – Suma stops Ahmed Musa again. It's a personal battle between the two players so far.

30’ – Taiwo gives away the ball easily but Obi to the rescue, Obi is brought down for a free kick for Nigeria.

31’ – Joel Obi's kick misses Osaze's head for a goal kick for the Leone Stars.

32’ – At the other end of the pitch, Sierra Leone force a second corner.

33’ – Sierra Leone coach Christain Cole is all animated on the touchline in his cream suit and matching yellow tie.

34’ – Emenike again brought down by Simbo. It's a crunchy tackle on the Turkey-based striker.

35’ – Ahmed Musa shows his pace as he gets behind the defence and Sierra Leone conceed a corner.

35’ – Musa fails to connect the resulting corner.

36’ – Suma is booked for a foul on rampant Musa on the edge of the box.

37’ – Sierra Leone defence keeps out Joel Obi's free kick.

38’ – Emenike is again stretchered off and it's likely he will be replaced by Ekigho Ehiosun, leading scorer in the Nigeria premier league with seven goals thus far.

39’ – Nigeria make their first change - Ehiosun takes the place of injured Emenike.

40’ – Mohammed Bangoura continues to test the Eagles central defence pairing of Yobo and Odibe.

41’ – Ahmed Musa is lightening fast! He simply leaves his markers in his wake, but somehow Sierra Leone survive this latest assault led by the VVV Venlo star.

44’ – Ahmed Musa fails to reach Osaze's cross on the right of the pitch as the pace of the game slows down.

45’ – There will be two minutes of additional time for this first half.

45 + 1’ – Joel Obi wins another corner for Nigeria. he has really caught the eye.

45 + 1’ – Ahmed Musa's driver from outside the box is pushed by the goalie for a corner.

45 + 2’ – Goal! Second goal for Nigeria by sub Ehiosun as he cleverly stabs a cross by Joel Obi.

45 + 2’ – It is a well taken goal by the top scorer of the NPL, as the referee brings the first half to a close.

– A very interesting match-up by two teams who are willing to play attacking football.

3’ – Ubido is brought down nearby the Nigerian corner flag, free kick to Nigeria.

46’ – Nigeria kick off the second half.

46’ – Free kick against Sierra Leone at the start of this half after a hand ball in the middle of the park.

47’ – Osaze powers home a free kick about 40 metres from goal but it misses target narrowly.

48’ – The game is held up after the outstanding Joel Obi falls down ackwardly from an aerial battle.

49’ – Sierra Leonians are undaunted as they are two goals down and so continue to search for a goal of their own.

50’ – The Leone Stars continue to press for a goal but the Eagles look solid at the back.

52’ – Sierra Leone's Mohammed Mansoury replaces David Simbo.

53’ – Skipper Yobo hooks the ball away as Suma attacks.

54’ – Sierra Leone's Ayo King replaces Fofana.

55’ – Leone Stars keep a close watch on the ever lively Ahmed Musa.

57’ – Obi Metzer Junior is Sierra Leone's third substitution.

58’ – Kallon is booked for a foul on Ehiosun.

59’ – Odibe handles the ball outside the Nigerian box, he is booked and a free kick is awarded to Siera Leone.

60’ – Nothing comes out of the free kick as a Siera Leone player is caught offside in the process.

62’ – Substitution - Mohammed Kadia replaces Ibrahima Bangoura.

63’ – Taiwo pushed the ball for yet another corner to Sierra Leone, who are on the front foot now as the Eagles appear to be missing some gas.

64’ – The impressive Obi is replaced by Julius Ubido of Heartland.

65’ – Ubido's first touch flies well off target.

66’ – Nigeria substitution: Olubayo Adefemi is in for Chibuzor Okonkwo.

67’ – Joseph Yobo is a tower of strength in the heart of the Nigerian defence as he holds off Mohammed Kadia.

68’ – Free kick to Sierra Leone by the center circle.

69’ – Mohammed Kallon is bringing his experience to bear in the middle of the park now.

70’ – Corner to Nigeria caused by Ehiosun.

71’ – Nigerian goal by Osaze disallowed for offside.

71’ – Ahmed Musa's pullout is headed home by Osaze but ref says it was scored from offside position.

72’ – Ahmed Musa tries a shot when a cross was needed and scores stay at 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.

74’ – Nigeria have slowed down while the Leone Stars keep coming at them for a face saving goal.

75’ – Ubido could have made it 3-0 but his left foot shot from inside the Sierra Leone box flies off target.

76’ – It would have been a goal scored against the run of play as the Sierra Leonians are not giving up yet.

77’ – The visitors must take some credit for making this match a good contest.

78’ – Sierra Leone come at the Eagles again and Mohammed Bangoura gets a corner kick.

80’ – A ding dong affair now, as Nigeria attack and are rebuffed by their opponents.

82’ – Odibe out for Abdulwasiu Sowemimo of Kano Pillars.

83’ – Taiwo's free kick from 45 metres misses John Tyre's goal narrowly.

84’ – Osas Okoro replaces Osaze for Nigeria.

85’ – Ahmed Musa is really a handful for the Sierra Leone defence.

85’ – Mohammed Bangoura appears to have injured his groin and the game is held up again.

87’ – Sierra Leone is very much in control this second half. They are flagged offside with three minutes left on the clock now.

89’ – Goal! Mohammed Kabia scores! A well deserved goal by Sierra Leone.

89’ – The fans are not happy and begin to boo the Eagles and are now cheering the Sierra Leonians.

90’ – There will be four minutes of added time.

90 + 1’ – Ajilore puts his foot wrong again in midfield. Fair play by Nigeria as a Leone Star is down and the game is temporarily halted and the player is stretchered off.

90 + 3’ – The minutes are ticking away,

90 + 4’ – The referee blows the whistle for Full Time. Game over!

– It's a story of two halves, Nigeria had the first half, while Sierra Leone took control of the second period.

Crown keeper seeks to end losing streak

Crown Football Club goalkeeper Ayobami Ojo is hoping his side can shrugged off their miserable streak of five losses on the bounce and return to winning ways. Ojo said the Ajilete Valiants' poor run in the topflight is worrisome to him after they appeared to have started the campaign strongly.

"It worries that we have not won a single game in more than a month. It is even bad that we have lost every game in the past one month.

"Now we need to start winning games so that we can escape relegation. The last one month has been difficult for the team and last week after losing to Bukola Babes at home added to it. So we need to brace up now," said the Crown keeper.

Ojo acknowledged that the game against Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) at the MKO Abiola on Sunday will be another test to Crown's resolve to remain in the Premier League.

"It is going to be a difficult match but we don't have a choice now than to put up a very good performance and get something from the match (against 3SC)," said Ojo.

The last time the Premier League newcomers won a game was last year December in a one-nil victory over Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) Football Club through Gabriel Agu’s goal.

Also, the Ajilete Valiants have not taken any point from their last five games and are 18th on the log with 10 points from 12 games.

It is also worse for Crown, as they have not scored in their last five games.

Crown fire coach Salami

Struggling Nigeria Premier League (NPL) side, Crown Football Club, have sacked their head coach, Ganiyu Salami, following Sunday’s 0-2 loss to Bukola Babes at the Gateway International Stadium in Ilaro in a Week 13 game. The sack of the coach came immediately after Sunday's defeat.

The Premier League newcomers explained in statement made available to SuperSport.com four hours after the 0-2 loss at home that the sack of the former Nigerian Under17 coach was due to poor results in the past weeks.

Salami is, however, not the only one sacked as the entire technical crew of the team suffered same ordeal except for Oladunni Oyekale, who now takes charge of the side as interim boss.

“Following heavy defeats suffered by the club in recent times, the management of Crown FC has relieved the technical crew of their jobs and appointed coach Oladunni Oyekale to be in charge of the club for now,” the statement from the club read.

Players of the Premier League side were not spared, as their pay had been slashed for poor performance in recent weeks.

“Equally the players’ salary had been temporarily slashed,” read part of the statement.

Crown FC also stated that they could head into the transfer market to bring in new players to save the side from demotion.

The club’s overseer, Olanrewaju Oladeji, is said to be angry with the team’s 0-2 defeat at the hands of fellow newcomers, Bukola Babes, after his riot act reading to the players and coaches last week.

Crown FC last won a Premier League game on December 19, 2010. It was a one-nil win against Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) Football Club through Gabriel Agu’s goal.

The Ogbomoso club have taken no points in their last five games and are 18th on the log with 10 points from 12 games.

The former Nigeria National League (NNL) champions are also yet to score in their last five games while they have not picked a point since the start of this year.

CHOES of the June 12, 1993 election reverbertated in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Sunday with one of the daughters of the winner of the poll, Lola, vowing that no one would truncate her bid to represent Ogun Central district in the Senate.

She made the vow just as three governors – Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) and Jonah Jang (Plateau State) – emerged victorious in the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primaries.

Abiola-Edewor and Iyabo Obasanjo – Bello, contested the senatorial primaries under two factions of the PDP in Ogun State on Saturday.

Abiola-Edewor won the primaries conducted by a faction said to have the sympathy of the state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, while Obasanjo Bello emerged victorious at the other primary carried out by the faction led by Dayo Soremi.

A few days before Abiola-Edewor, a former member of the House of Representatives spoke, Obasanjo, a former president had stormed the PDP national secretariat last week to complain about the conduct of the primaries.

He was said to have threatened to quit the PDP if the perceived anormalies in the exercise were not corrected.

A source in the Ogun State Government House had told one of our correspondents in Abeokuta that the governor was under pressure from the Presidency to declare Iyabo-Obasanjo the winner of the senatorial primary election.

“There has been much pressure from Abuja on the governor to intervene in ensuring that Iyabo Obasanjo emerges as the senatorial candidate for Ogun Central,” the source said.

But Abiola-Edewor told journalists on Sunday that she decided to speak out because “there is a rumour that the powers that be want to annul the election that was conducted by the National Working Committee of our party and witnessed by the Independent National Electoral commission officials from Abuja.”

She expressed surprise at what she described as another attempt to perpetrate electoral injustice against the Abiola family and wondered why the family should always be a victim of injustice.

Abiola-Edewor said, “When Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello wanted to attend the screening, she came to the authentic party secretariat headed by Chief Joju Fadairo to get screened but on her own volition went to the illegal faction’s secretariat headed by Dayo Soremi to contest.

“Nobody can annul my election the way they did to my father. When the act of injustice was done against my father, he sacrificed his life and if needs be, I am ready to do same. I am not a coward.

“My father’s blood that was sacrificed for democracy allowed Iyabo Obasanjo’s father to be President. You cannot sacrifice me again,” Abiola-Edewor said.

In the PDP primaries conducted in the PDP faction headed by Daniel, Abiola-Edewor scored 567 against a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Kayode Amusan, who polled 483.

Meanwhile, results of the governorship primaries held on Sunday started trickling in on Sunday afternoon with Sylva of Bayelsa State emerging victorious in the exercise that was witnessed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sylva scored 420 votes to defeat 12 other aspirants. His closest rival, Chief Francis Doukpola, polled 10 votes, followed by a former chairman of the party, Chief Fred Agbedi, who scored eight votes.

After the announcement of the result, Jonathan again called on Nigerians to guard their votes in the April elections.

The President was the first person to vote from his Ogbia Constituency among the 471 delegates that took part in the exercise conducted amidst tight security.

Jonathan said he decided to attend the primary in the state to demonstrate his belief in one man one vote, which he had been preaching.

“Many of you will be surprised that I am here. Everybody knows we are preaching one man one vote, one woman one vote, and one youth one vote. I came to vote, and I sat down all through to defend my vote. That was why I did not leave before the end,” he said.

The President said the era of ballot box snatching was over and challenged Nigerians to must defend their votes by ensuring that they were counted.

“You must vote and stay to the end and watch your vote. The era of ballot snatching ballot papers is gone,” he said.

Jonathan congratulated Sylva on his victory and advised him to work harder to ensure victory for the PDP in the April election.

“It was a landslide victory, it shows that your people still want you to lead them,” the President said.

In Rivers State, Amaechi also won by scoring 1,139 votes to beat Mrs. Dennisada Ben-Fiabeme, who polled only one vote.

Two other aspirants, Chief Celestine Omehia and Dr. Moore Oja Chinda, did not score any vote.

Though, Omehia was absent at the venue of the election, members of the election panel agreed that he was part of the race.

Speaking after he was declared winner, Amaechi called for the reconciliation of all the aggrieved aspirants in the state.

Amaechi’s counterpart in Plateau State, Jang was elected as the PDP candidate in a poll where he was the sole candidate.

Jang had 756 of the 763 votes cast by the delegates. Seven votes were voided.

Seven former aspirants had dumped the PDP for the Labour Party and Action Congress of Nigeria.

They included the state deputy governor, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, former governor Fidelis Tapgun, Messrs Jimmy Cheto, Pam Dung Gyang and Damishi Sango.

Jang, who thanked members of the party for voting for him, said the journey had been a trying one.

More results of the senatorial primaries particularly in Imo and Akwa Ibom State showed surprises as some heavy weights in the National Assembly were roundly defeated.

In Imo, for instance, Senators Chris Anyanwu and Osita Izunaso representing Imo East and Imo West senatorial districts lost their bids to Mrs. Kema Chikwe, a former Nigerian ambassador to the Republic of Ireland and Iceland, and Chief Hope Uzodinma, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees.

While Anyanwu polled 931 votes, Chikwe, scored 1,084. Izunaso got 891 votes while Uzodinma scored 2,147 votes.

Another big name loser in the state was Chief Cosmas Iwu, the younger brother of the immediate Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Maurice Iwu. He lost to Ambassador Matthew Nwagwu in the race for the Imo North Senatorial seat.

Only Senator Aloysius Etuk was able to revalidate his ticket among the three senators representing the three senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom State.

Senators Bob Effiong was defeated by Obong Ita Enang while Eme Ekaette was beaten by Mrs. Helen Esuene, wife of Housing and Urban Development Minister.

In Rivers State, Senator Wilson Ake, was declared the winner in Rivers West senatorial district.

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who contested against Ake, Chief Chibudom Nwuche, however, claimed to have won the ticket.

He has already taken his protest to the leadership of the PDP through a petition to the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.

In the petition copied Jonathan, he alleged that non-delegates were allowed to vote in the primaries. Nwuche also said that the state chairman of the party, Chief Godspower Ake, paved the way for his (Ake) blood brother, Wilson, to emerge victorious.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Privatisation, Senator Ayo Arise, and his Drugs, Narcotics Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption counterpart, Senator Sola Akinyede won in Ekiti North and Ekiti South senatorial districts.

The primary election in Ekiti Central Senatorial District, however, failed to produce a winner due to irregularities .

Our correspondent in the state gathered that a senatorial aspirant allegedly duplicated ballot papers used in the election. A delegate, who made this known, added that the aspirant bribed some of his colleagues to vote for him,

The delegate said, “ The aspirant’s delegates were able to fraudulently vote by proxy for other delegates in Ado-Ekiti, Ijero, Irepodun/Ifelodun but he was exposed in Efon-Alaaye.”

The aspirants seeking the ticket in the district are Mr. Femi Kila, Chief Reuben Famuyibo, Mrs. Fatima Raji-Rasaki, and Mr. Obafemi Oye.

The Director of Communications and Strategy of the PDP in the state, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, confirmed the irregularities during a telephone chat with our correspondent.

He said, “There were some identified irregularities and the result of Ekiti Central Senatorial District were cancelled.”

Adebayo said that a new date would be announced for the conduct of the primary election.

In Plateau Central senatorial zone, the younger brother of a former Head of State, Mr. Dawuda Gowon, won the primary while in Kogi, State, the PDP Electoral Panel, said Mr. Muhammed Idris, the son of the state Governor, Ibrahim Idris, did not win the primary for Ankpa/Olamaboro/Omala Federal Constituency.

The panel also clarified that no election was conducted in Kogi-West Senatorial District, where an incumbent Senator, Mr. Smart Adeyemi, is seeking reelection.

In Abia State, Senator Uche Chukwuemerije, Nkechi Nwogu and Enyinnaya Abaribe were returned to contest the senatorial seats in Abia North, Central and South districts. No hitch was recorded in the state.

The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Babayo Gamawa, won in the Bauchi North senatorial district by beating Alhaji Aminu Ahmed-Yapeco.

Three persons were feared dead in Enugu State on Sunday when people suspected to be thugs tried to dirsrupt the primary by a faction loyal to the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, in Nkanu East and Nkanu West Local Government Areas.

A stalwart of the party in Enugu , who didn’t want his name in print, told THE PUNCH, that Nwodo’s supporters had converged on Amagunze, the headquarters of Nkanu East around 12 noon for the exercise when the gun-wielding thugs attacked them.

He said, “The thugs fired sporadically and caused stampede in the entire area, with party members scampering for safety. At least two persons reportedly lost their lives in the process, while scores of others sustained injuries.”

In the Nkanu West incident, one person was said to have been killed , another group of thugs led by the managing director of one of the state-owned companies, allegedly attacked Nwodo supporters at Agbani.

Efforts to get the police’s reaction proved abortive as the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, did not respond to text messages sent to his telephone.

However, a source in the camp of the Enugu State governor dismissed the purported primaries as a ‘’vain exercise’’, just as Governor Sullivan Chime was seen boarding a private jet for Lagos.

Chime’s trip to Lagos was about 24 hours after he hosted Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and his Ekiti State counterpart, Mr. Kayode Fayemi.

In Anambra State, the two factions of the PDP in the state elected different candidates for the Anambra South senatorial district.

While one faction nominated a former Special Assistant to Obasanjo on Domestic Affairs, Dr. Andy Uba, as its candidate, the other faction elected Mr. Nicholas Ukachukwu.

But the state Resident Electoral Commission, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukogu, said INEC would work with Uba because he was produced by the state executive of the PDP recognised by a court.

At Anambra Central senatorial disrict, Senator Annie Okonkwo, Mr. Chudi Offordile and Dr. Jerry Ugokwe are laying claims to victory in the exercise.

In Akwa Ibom State, the spokesman of the House of Representatives, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, was defected by the PDP legal Adviser in the state, Mr. Bassey Dan-Abia.

Eyiboh, who represents Eket Federal constituency was polled only 179 votes against Dan-Abia’s 586.
