Politics / ‘how Buhari’s Broadcast Will Raise Or Crash Economy’ by ceomike(m): 7:09am On Aug 21, 2017
Investors in anxious wait for president’s first remark in 105 days
Financial market operators and investors, both local and international, are waiting anxiously to take dramatic investment decisions as President Muhammadu Buhari makes his first official speech on the economy in 105 days.

The wait is based on an assessment by financial experts that the socio-political economy of the country has recorded significant progress in Buhari’s absence, which stands to be validated or reversed by his speech today and subsequent decisions.

Specifically, the Niger Delta threats have been managed, resulting in increased oil production and earnings; the foreign exchange market has witnessed changes that brought about relative stability of the naira; and businesses are gradually rebounding with improved numbers as reforms pick up.

Ailing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s return to the country from London where he is receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment is imminent, the president of the country’s senate said on Thursday.

“It is clear that Mr President’s insistence on following his doctors’ advice has yielded the desired results,” Saraki said.

“I therefore confidently look forward to Mr President’s imminent return home.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki and the speaker of House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara were the latest Nigerian public officials to meet Buhari in London. The members of the #ResumeOrResign Campaign led by entertainment icon, Charles Oputa (a.k.a Charly Boy) and some journalists escaped lynching by hoodlums at the Wuse Market in Abuja yesterday.

The group had marched deep into the market, chanting their ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ slogan against President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence, which is in its 100th day today, when suddenly some young men started trooping in confrontationally with their ‘Sai Baba!’ counter-chant.

Everyone was caught off guard when the hoodlums started throwing stones at everyone. They formed a cordon around the rally area in a seemingly planned attack.

Politics / Buhari, Just Come Back Home by ceomike(m): 8:03am On Jul 27, 2017
Whether President Muhammadu Buhari has been irrevocably hobbled by ill health or he is sound in body and mind and prancing around in the Abuja House in London is a puzzle that would not be unravelled until he returns home.

Even if all the state governors, the officials of the presidency and political parties travel to London and return with the verdict that Buhari exudes great health and a stellar sense of humour that belies the stern stuff he is made of, this would make no difference to Nigerians. Let Buhari write again to his Guinean counterpart that he is well and that he would soon return to Nigeria to assume the responsibilities he has abandoned for months, this would not still douse Nigerians’ doubts. They would maintain the skepticism that Buhari is yet to recover from his debilitating sickness that has kept him away from Aso Rock.

This cynicism is well founded. The officials of government have so much lost the citizens’ good will that they cannot be trusted. Remember? It was the same way that politicians and even clerics visited the late President Musa Yar’Adua but when they returned they did not tell Nigerians that he was incapacitated. It was only the then Minister of Information, the late Dora Akunyili who had the courage to shed off the carapace of propaganda for Nigerians to be confronted with the reality: the truth that the health of their president was beyond recovery. Yes, we take cognisance of the fact that a glaring misalignment of the creeds and deeds of politicians, especially the ones in these climes, oftentimes makes trusting them as amounting to self-immolation.

But the politicians of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have taken this vice of unreliability to an intolerable height. How does one expect the citizens to believe politicians of the APC hue when to the amazement of Nigerians they have disavowed the promises they made during electioneering? It was the same party that promised restructuring that has now dismissed it as unthinkable. It is thus not surprising when we see the Minister of Information Lai Mohammed engages in futile attempts to portray the president as having recovered from his affliction. When he strove on a national television programme to tell Nigerians that Buhari was no longer sick, he only succeeded in confirming the suspicion of the citizens that he is afflicted with a pathology of lying that he has not bothered to cure himself of. Or how do we explain a situation where Mohammed said that he had neither seen nor spoken to the president since he travelled yet he was so sure that he was not as sick as suggested by some Nigerians?

After 52 goals in 83 matches, two EPL titles, one EFL Cup and plenty of memorable moments, it seems that Diego Costa’s time at Chelsea has come to an end. The enigmatic Brazilian-born Spaniard has revealed that Antonio Conte, Chelsea’s Italian manager, sent him a text message to tell him his time with the English champions was up. A lot has been said about how better the parting of ways could have been handled, but at the end of the day, the inevitability of the breakup had been there all along.

As Costa’s legend is being consigned to the annals of the Pensioners’ history, another man who left Stamford Bridge as a boy some time ago is ready to come back and fulfil all the promise he showed at a young age at the London club. Politics / Democracy, The Elders And Buhari’s Presidency by ceomike(m): 11:27am On Jun 02, 2017
It is very unfortunate that some elders who ought to be looked up to by the younger ones as towers of strength in a delicate and complicated federation are the ones making regular toxic statements that can destroy the country’s basis for unity. The provocative statements by a socio-political group, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), to the effect that its members would not allow strict adherence to constitutional provisions should ailing President Muhammadu Buhari find it impossible to continue in office are insensitive, careless and unpatriotic in the extreme. To start with, President Buhari is only human and the prayers of all Nigerians are that he gets well soon to continue the execution of the duties of his office.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) which has been very dubious in defending so-called“ northern interests” since the reported illness of the president met in Kano the other day and warned that some leaders of the ruling party had been exploiting the absence of the president to undermine the presidency. If this was so, such persons should be seen to be just as odious.

Culture / Oba Of Lagos Versus Oba Of Ile-ife by ceomike(m): 11:00am On Jun 02, 2017
The title of this piece is in line with that of the famous Daily Times weekly columnist, the late Allah de Odunewu, when in his inimitable humorous style, he wrote in the early 1970s: “Kola Balogun Vs. Kola Balogun”. This is the template for mine that reads: “Oba of Lagos Vs. Oba of Ile-Ife”. There are differences in the personalities. Allah de’s personalities were private citizens of repute, whilst in mine, the personalities are royal fathers. In his article, the duo was flexing muscles over the similarity in their names. That was a storm in a tea cup. In mine, the royal fathers are apparently proving superiority of status through snub. It confirms the truth in the idiom: “It takes two to tango”. The background to the tango is essential.\

Politics / Biafra At Fifty by ceomike(m): 9:42am On May 30, 2017
It was on May 30, 1967 that Col. Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the military governor of Eastern Nigeria, declared that region the Republic of Biafra. A few weeks later, Col. Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s head of state, declared war on the secessionist territory. The war dragged on for 30 horror-filled months until the Biafrans threw in the towel in January 1970. Gowon announced a three-point programme of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction. A few days ago, Biafra became 50 and was marked with a solemn seminar titled “Memory and Nation-building: Biafra 50 Years After.” It was well attended: Olusegun Obasanjo who commanded troops in that war and later on became head of state and President of Nigeria; Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who was in primary school then but is now the Acting President of Nigeria; Ahmed Joda who was one of Gowon’s super permanent secretaries at the time. He headed the Muhammadu Buhari transition committee in 2015. John Nnia Nwodo, the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, a former minister of Information and a scion of the famous Nwodo family; Professor Ebere Onwudiwe, a well-known political scientist and public intellectual.

There were several others, most of them young Igbo intellectuals who were probably not born during the war. There was nothing substantial or divergent to be expected from a group like that. It was largely a gathering to do some introspection on the lessons of the war and why Biafra as an idea has not gone away. It was an exercise in admonition and not quite a forum for soul searching. But it was worth it because since the end of the war things have not moved swimmingly either for the Igbos or for Nigeria. There have been renewed agitations for the actualisation of Biafra as a republic. The agitators have been harassed and detained by security agencies but there is no let-up in the agitation.
