Sports / Poland 2019: Top U20 Players Who Are Not At The World Cup by cheapgoal: 8:39pm On May 26, 2019
The FIFA U20 World Cup kicked off to a frantic start on the 23rd of May with Senegalese young stars Amadou Sagna scoring a hat-trick with the first of it becoming the fastest goal ever scored in the history of the FIFA U20 World Cup with just less than ten seconds on the clock beating Nigeria’s Monday Odiaka‘s record of 14 seconds in 1985.

Other games were played with Italy thrashing Mexico in a 2-1 contest in the other Group B match, Ivan Angulo 23 min strike and Luis Sandoval late goal ensure Colombia 2-0 over Poland. Sassuolo’s midfielder, Davide Frattesi scored a fantastic opener for Italy and the 19 – year old’s spot on the team was confirmed as a result of Roma’s Nicholo Zaniolo’s absence from the team.

Often times, arguments arise as to the approach to underage tournaments, whether established players who are still under the eligible age should be taken to the tournament to boost teams’ chances of winning or preserve such spots for lesser-known players to showcase their talents to the world.

As the World focuses on Poland in the next couple of days to catch a glimpse of unknown players who could become superstars in the next couple of years, here are some top U20 players who are not at the World Cup, but are already playing at the top level of professional football and thus absent from the competition.

Gianluigi Donnarumma
Country – Italy
DOB – 29 February 1999 (20years)
Club – Ac Milan

Generally and popularly acclaimed to be Gianluigi Buffon‘s successor, Donnarumma who rightly sees the Italian legend as a role model broke into the limelight in 2015 becoming the youngest ever goalkeeper to debut in a Serie A match at the age of 16 years and 242 days breaking the record formerly held by Buffon.

Since then he has gone on to break several other records becoming the youngest goalkeeper to debut for the Italian national team at the age of 17. He has made over 165 appearances with over 50 clean sheets and had been linked with a big money move to Real Madrid in the past.

However, as the Azzurri’s stepped on to the pitch in Poland to face Mexico in their opener, Donnarumma was not listed for the tournament and it was a fellow Milan goalkeeper and his understudy, Plizzari Alessandro who manned the post. Juventus youth goalkeeper Loria Leonardo and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesechi are the alternative choices.

Christian Pulisic
Country – USA
DOB – 18 September 1998 (20years)
Club – Chelsea

What more can be said about Pulisic’s absence from the U20 World Cup? The former Dortmund player who recently moved to Chelsea would have been deemed too experienced for this tournament.

Wondering how and why? Not only has the brilliant midfielder had over 23 caps for the US National team but he was also seen as a core part of the country’s failed attempt to qualify for the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia as well as becoming the captain of the Stars and Stripes at the young age of 19.

However, rising star and PSG forward, Timothy Weah is listed for the tournament even though he made his international debut in a friendly in 2018 but Pulisic will likely be at the CONCACAF GOLD CUP holding in the summer instead.

Samuel Chukwueze
Country – Nigeria
DOB – 22 May 1999 (19)
Club – Villarreal

Nigeria’s teenage sensation and rave of the moment, Chukwueze is already a U17 World Cup winner after featuring at the Chile 2015 edition. However, Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2017 U20 world cup in South Korea see him fail to feature at the cadet competition.

Although the Villareal man was eligible for the ongoing tournament, his stock has risen tremendously in the last 12 months posting impressive display in the La Liga and in the Europa league since breaking into the yellow submarines’ first team and sas such may have grown beyond this level.

His displays didn’t go unnoticed by the handlers of the National team, as debates were raised as to whether he should feature for the Super Eagles at the AFCON in Egypt or the Flying Eagles in Poland.

However, despite the possibility of featuring at both tournaments, his club’s stance on picking just one of either, saw the winger settle to play with the big men. He could have been sincerely too much to handle for USA, Ukraine and Qatar.

Martin Odegaard
Country – Norway
DOB – 28 December 1998 (20)
Club – Real Madrid

Well, many would probably be reawakened by the name of the young lad on this list, the Norwegian was signed by Real Madrid as a 16 – year old and he was touted to be next big thing.

This was not far fetched after becoming the youngest debutant in the Norwegian league in 2014 as a 15-year old as well as a National team player in the same year. That shows how long Odegaard has been on the big scene.

However, he has been largely inefficient and could arguably be considered as a flop having only played for Real Madrid’s first team just once in four years. He has largely played for the Castilla and as well gone on loan to the Dutch Eredivisie, playing for Heerenveen in 2017/2018 and Vitesse in the 2018/2019 season.

Although many could consider the U20 World Cup a chance for him to finally regain the form he once showed as a 15-year old, he has however been snubbed in order to give other players a chance at the spotlight. Doubt anyone would have noticed a Real Madrid player will be at the tournament if he had been chosen.

Sports / Danny Welbeck Hands Arsenal 11th Consecutive Wins For The First Time In 11 Years by cheapgoal: 10:36am On Oct 15, 2018
Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat Sporting Lisbon to stretch out their winning streak to 11 games. After a great extent of uninspiring and a forgettable first half, the Gunners bit by bit improved after the break and took control of Group E with a 1-0 triumph at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Momentum is an inquisitive thing. It requires a significant stretch of time to warm up and can go cool all of a sudden, but right now it is fuelling the North London side. However, this was not their most superb performance in recent weeks but rather they had enough quality to broaden their winning games in all competition to 11 and stay top on Group E in the Europa League.

Sports / 2018 World Cup : African Hopefuls In Russia Profiled by cheapgoal: 6:49pm On Jun 12, 2018
Out of the 32 teams gunning for Glory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, 5 of them will represent the Confederation Of African Football (CAF) region.

Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, Morocco, and Tunisia will be flying the African flags this year with usual big names who have participated in the past few world cups like Cameroon, Ghana, and Ivory coast missing out.

African appearance at the world cup started in 1934 when Egypt featured at the 2nd edition hosted in Italy, the pharaohs crashed out in the first round than where the competition was in the knockout format, the North Africans, however, have since only managed to qualify twice for the Mundial.

The next time an African team would later feature at the world cup was 36 years later in Mexico 1970 where Morocco featured. It was until Spain 1982 before Africa got 2 slots at the world cup and it was so until 1994 before it was raised to 3 slots and then raised up to 5 at France 1998 which has been upheld since then.

This year, Salah, Mane, John Obi Mikel, Mehdi Benatia will be hoping to lead their teams beyond the Quarterfinals which have been beyond the reach of the 13 different African teams that have at one time or the other participated at the world cup.

With less than 3 days left to the opening match of this year’s world cup, Cheapgoals.com profiles the African representatives

• NIGERIA

https://i0.wp.com/cheapgoals.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Gernot-Rohr.jpg?resize=768%2C432

Captain: John Mikel Obi
Best World Cup Finish: R16 (1994, 98, 2014)
Manager: Gernot Rohr
Debut: USA 1994
No of Appearances: 6th

The Super Eagles endured a tough group for qualification to the world cup after drawing Cameroon, Algeria, and Zambia in group B but they made an easy work of their group qualifying with a game to spare although the last match against Algeria a 1-1 draw was overturned to a 3-0 win for the Algerians after Nigeria fielded an ineligible player.

However, that didn’t overshadow their impressive results during the qualifiers against Cameroon in Uyo which ended in an emphatic 4-0 win and another 3-1 win against Algeria at the same venue.

The team will, however, face tougher tests at the world cup finals after been drawn in Group D alongside Europeans Croatia, Iceland and familiar foes in Argentina whom they will be facing for the 5th time in the history of the competition.

Ranked as the underdogs in the group, the Nigerians have been unimpressive in their recent friendlies approaching the world cup losing to the Czech Republic, England and Serbia while drawing DR Congo.

The recent uninspiring performances have led to lowered expectations from fans which were previously high after a brilliant display in the 4-2 defeat of Argentina in a friendly in November 2017 and a resilient 1-0 win over a Robert Lewandoski led Poland in March this year.

Possessing a squad with a mixture of youthful talents and experienced veterans led by the likes of Mikel, Victor Moses, Echiejile and Onazi, Alex Iwobi, Iheanach, Tyronne Ebuehi the Super Eagles, however, lack trusted hands between the post as inexperienced rookie Francis Uzoho looks likely to be the Number 1 for the Nigerians, a situation which many have touted to affect the chances of the 3-time African champions.

Vincent Enyeama’s retirement from the national team and Carl Ikeme’s battle with leukemia has left Gernot Rhor searching for a reliable goalkeeper starting with Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu before settling for Deportivo’s handler Uzoho.

However, with the Super Eagles unpredictable nature of rising to the occasion when least expected, one can expect the round of 16 finish from the West Africans.

• EGYPT

Captain: Essam El Hadary
Best World Cup Finish: Group stage (1934, 1990)
Manager: Hector Cuper
Debut: Italia 1934
No of Appearances: 3rd

Despite being the record winners of the African Cup of Nations with 7 trophies to their cabinet, 2 runners-up medal and three 3rd place finishes, the Pharaohs have never passed the group stages in the last 2 appearances at the world cup. More surprising is the fact that during their six-year dominance on the African scene winning the AFCON from 2006 till 2010 they failed to appear on the world scene in Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010.

Furthermore, both appearances at the world cup had a reasonably long period of absence in between them but after 28 years of missing out of the global fiesta Mohammed Salah rose up to be the savior, top scoring for Egypt with five goals during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification, including both goals in the decisive 2–1 victory over Congo, one of which was a penalty in the last minute to make the Pharaohs reach their first World Cup finals since 1990.

Although their recent friendly results have been poor with loses to Belgium, Portugal and Greece including draws with Kuwait and Colombia, Mohammed Salah’s recent fitness report should boost the Morales of the team and fans alike. The Liverpool forward was feared to possibly miss out of the world cup having being injured in the UEFA champions league final against Real Madrid in May.

With the new generation of talents coming from the North Africans led by legendary goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, Liverpool forward Mohammed Salah, West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazy, Arsenal’s Mohammed Elneny, the future looks bright and a round of 16 appearance looks possible after being grouped alongside the hosts Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group.

• SENEGAL

Captain: Cheikhou Kouyaté
Best World Cup Finish: Quarterfinal (2002)
Manager: Aliou Cissé
Debut: Korea/Japan 2002
No of Appearances: 2nd

Senegal are one of the three African teams to go unbeaten during the qualifiers (others being Egypt & Nigeria) and that’s not to say their journey to the finals was devoid of drama.

A 2-1 defeat to the South Africans in their second game was later annulled when the referee was found to have manipulated the match by awarding a penalty for a non-existent handball.

Aliou Cisse’s team then drew their next two games with Burkino Faso before getting back on track with a 2-0 win in Cape Verde. Qualification was secured with a 2-0 victory in the rescheduled match with South Africa in Polokwane.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal will be appearing at their 2nd world cup after their debut in 16 years ago where they handed a shock defeat to the champion, France at the group stage before going further to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Led by the likes of Saido Mane, Keita Balde, Senegal finished atop their qualification group which had Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and South Africa and they will hope to replicate the records of the legendary team of 2002 which had current team coach Aliou Cisse, El Hadji Diouf, Papa Diop and co which went all the way to the last 8th of the competition.

Their warm-up matches to the world cup have not been impressive either drawing against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Luxembourg, and Uzbekistan while losing to Croatia before posting a morale-boosting 2-0 win against South Korea in their last warm-up game. They will face Poland, Japan and Colombia in Russia

• MOROCCO

Captain: Mehdi Benatia
Best World Cup Finish: R16 1986
Manager: Herve Renard
Debut: Mexico 1970
No of Appearances: 5th

The Atlas Lions are Africa’s most in-form team ahead of the World Cup having gone 10 games unbeaten (winning 8 and drawing 2) in all competitions since their 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the 2019 AFCON qualifier played in June 2017.

More impressive is their qualification record where they got 4points each from their group opponents which consisted of Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Mali scoring 11 goals and conceding none, going undefeated throughout the qualifiers. Their form was translated to their home-based team who went on to win the 2018 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) on home soil defeating Nigeria 4-0 in the final.

Ayoub Elkaabi who was the top scorer in that competition earned a call-up from the national team which also includes Hakim Ziyech, Nordi Amrabaat and Achraf Hakimi by coach Herve Renard to the main team for the world cup; their first since France 1998. They may have defeated Slovakia, Uzbekistan, Serbia, and Estonia drew Ukraine in their warm-up games however, they face a mission impossible to qualify from Group B at the world cup where they are grouped alongside 2010 champions Spain, European champions Portugal and Iran.

• TUNISIA

Captain: Aymen Mathlouthi
Best World Cup Finish: Group stage
Manager: Nabil Maaloul
Debut: 1978
No of Appearances: 5th

Russia 2018 is the fifth appearance for the Carthage Eagles at the world cup, despite their decent appearance record at the world cup the Carthage Eagles have failed to make any meaningful impact yet at the world cup, going out of the group stages on each occasion.

The North Africans had a relatively easy group during qualification after they were drawn with DR Congo, Libya, and Guinea. 6games 4wins and 2draws and an abysmal scoring record of 11goals in 6 matches were all they needed to for their first world cup in 12 years

Their top scorer Youssef Msakni has been ruled out with injury and it is left to see where Tunisians will draw their goalscoring inspirations from. Sunderland’s Wahbi Khazri could be an alternative for set pieces but it is left to see what impact he will make against the likes of England, Belgium, and Panama in Group G.

However, they have posted impressive performances in recent friendlies, losing 1-0 to Spain, drawing 2-2 against Turkey and Portugal and posting 1-0 wins against Iran and Costa Rica.

1. Gianluigi Buffon-€52.8m (Parma – Juventus, 2001)

Buffon has gone ahead to wind up as one of, if not the best goalkeepers ever. He has won endless awards, trophies and individual records of which there are beyond any reasonable amount to list here.

The Italian has had a career of 856 matches including 175 international caps with Italy, has been in the World’s Top 3 over the past 15 years, has been crowned as the IFFHS Goalkeeper of the Decade (2000-2010). Buffon is still playing for Juventus at the age of 40! He is phenomenal.

2. Ederson – €40 (£35m) (Benfica – Manchester City,2017)

The Brazil international has had a noteworthy impact in English football, with his game being taken higher than ever following a £35 million transfer and has helped the Cityzens to be leading the Premier League log by a significant edge in the 2017/18 season.

Ederson is exceptionally respected for his remarkable ball distribution and expertise. His control and confidence on the ball help him to hold possession and rapidly play the ball out from the back-suiting Pep Guardiola’s style of play flawlessly.

Still just 24 years old, there is the guarantee of significantly more to come from a man who is as of now being put alongside the likes of David de Gea and Manuel Neuer. And that is why he is one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time.

3. Manuel Neuer €30million (FC Schalke 04 – Bayern Munich, 2001)

The German shot-stopper was signed in 2001 and is broadly viewed as the best goalkeepers’ on the planet. In spite of the fact that in recent seasons David de Gea could be considered by others as the best.

Neuer arrived at Bayern Munich as a young and promising goalkeeper, and now he is truly outstanding. Aptly nicknamed ‘The Wall’, Neuer hit a century of clean sheets in record time (183 matches) in 2016/17, crushing Oliver Reck’s past best-mark (232 matches) by some distant.

Some of his saves are totally incredible. His reflexes and shot ceasing skills are relatively beast-like. Want more reason why such shot-stopper should earn more?

Ars Bandeet

As far as anyone knows, Bandeet is an Algerian footballer in the 1970s, there is by all accounts thin confirmation of his existence but was certainly included in any case. The two name choices are controversial and possibly that is the reason we are discussing them instead of discussing football abilities.

Relax, this player is not a character from the early 90’s American crime film ‘Goodfellas’ but rather he is the former captain of the Seychelles national team. According to reports, he is considered as a legend of the East Africa country and I believe it’s not a direct result of his name.

Sports / Chelsea V Barcelona Preview : Insightful Analysis, Line-ups & Form Guide by cheapgoal: 11:50am On Feb 20, 2018
Chelsea will be looking to cause an upset against Barcelona to enhance their impressive record against the Catalan club and get off to a decent start in the first leg of the Champions League round-16 tie.

After a somewhat turbulent period, the West London appears to have steadied the stormy ship over a recent couple of weeks. After that mortifying loss at Vicarage Road, the Blues pounded West Brom by three goals to nil, before giving out a beating to Hull City in the FA Cup. Neither of those fixtures was especially testing for Antonio Conte’s men, at the same time, they took care of business in a convincing style and will have reestablished some certainty ahead of this heavyweight clash.

Sports / Why Iheanachọ's Name Has Two Dots Under by cheapgoal: 10:46am On Feb 16, 2018
Ever wondered why Super Eagles and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho has two dots under his name on the back of his jersey.

The 21-year-old requested for the new inscription feature on his jersey after his move to the King Power Stadium. But the big question is: why did he make such request? He decided to have the details of the two dots to enhance proper pronunciation of the vowels – the ‘Ị’ & ‘Ọ’ – in his name.

The dialect has vowels including underdots, which change the articulation and pronunciation of the letter, having a tonal language with two distinctive tones, high and low. In some cases, a third, down stepped high tone is recognized.

For Iheanacho's case, the 'I' and 'o' inside his surname include these. Thus, the right spelling of the striker's name is Ịheanachọ. examples are Ẹ, Ị, Ọ, Ụ, Ṅ, Ṣ, Ɓ, Ɗ, and Ƙ

Iheanacho is a member of the Igbo speaking tribe which makes up an extensive level of the populace in the West African country. The Foxes striker hometown is in the state of Imo, where the population is 98 percent Igbo.

Igbo is the principal native language of the Igbo people, an ethnic group of Southeastern Nigeria. The language has approximately 24 million speakers, who live mostly in Nigeria and are primarily of Igbo descent.

The former Manchester City forward, whose name actually interprets as 'what we are looking for', has these 'Dots' on his Leicester City jersey. Curiously, before joining The Foxes, Iheanacho's Manchester City kits didn't include the 'Dots'.

Some eminent Igbo players have graced the Premier League which includes the like of Nwankwo Kanu, Nedum Onuoha, Angelo Ogbonna, Jay-Jay Okocha, John Obi Mikel, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and others.

Surfboard:

Op, the headline should have "relieve" and not "relief".

Such a shame that Oliseh hasn't learnt better human relations and the patience it requires to stay at the top level for a long time as a manager. Results were very good which means there's a good tactician in there, but football management is never about just the tactics.

I hope he sees this as an opportunity to learn this side of the job. He's still young so opportunities will always come along. He just needs to be careful so the "disruptive" tag doesn't stick to him.

Thanks for the correction.. auto correct ishh
