damosky12: People attend universities for different reasons. MBA candidates attend business schools for the network, not academics. People attend universities that speak to their career interests, not mere academics. I am proud to have attended the University of Lagos and I would not think twice about a do-over; it was a truly diverse community. UNILAG students have very diverse interests; some come for the academic depth of the science and engineering faculties, others come for the strong network in the arts and social sciences. Me, I attended for the University's strong record in finance and business education. Most tech billionaires did not attend Stanford or MIT for academics, they simply wanted access to Silicon Valley and VC investors - once they got that, they dropped out. 2 Likes |

Scholastica16: I will not be completing my Sloan applications for now; there is still time to change my mind tho. Right now, I feel Sloan is too expensive and will leave me in a ton of debt after graduation, and MA is a really expensive state. I am sure I will get in UT Austin because I'm way above their class averages; but I am unlikely to go there because UTs MFin is not STEM-designated and that is a deal-breaker for me. As per cost, what I have realized is that while the state may be cheap, the metro areas are quite expensive. UT is in Austin, which is an expensive city. Just like Nashville; the state (Tennessee) seems like a cheap state but the Nashville area is quite expensive. I have been looking at housing options and it is unbelievable. To make matters worse, Vanderbilt is located in the poshest area of Nashville making it even more expensive. 1 Like |

eldee365: "Good score" is relative. 700 will be amazing at Univ of Florida, but it will be "meh" at Columbia. TOEFL does not have anything value for assessing applications in B-school; it just shows you can learn and communicate in English; If you like score 120/120, does not matter. |

eldee365: You will need to so some research. Applying to business school is very different from applying to most other programs. You cannot just say "anything that has funding." You need to have direction and a clear strategy. What do you want to do? You must be very specific in b-school application. what are your exact career goals? b-schools, especially the good ones, are extremely competitive and they do not want to waste slots on people who do not have a career strategy. So, what exactly do you want to do? 1 Like |

eldee365: MBA's usually will not give full funding. They can give full-tuition but you must be a "great" candidate - meaning your undergrad GPA is very high (3.9 ish); You are hitting 750 in the GMAT; you kill your interviews; your recommendations; your professional accomplishments; your extracurricular activities; and most important "YOUR STORY" as told in your essays. The essays are very key - that's where you sell your past, present, and future ambitions. If you do not even know what exams to write, you are late to the party. First deadlines have passed already; in fact, interview decisions for round 1 have gone out. Round 2 is around the corner; the further the round, the lower the scholarship dollars available. 1 Like |

eldee365: Business schools, at least top 100, require you to take the GMAT or the GRE. Some schools prefer the GMAT especially for the MBA; but the vast majority accept both. Harvard / Wharton for instance accepts both. It’s best you look at the schools you have in mind to see what tests they accept, or what test they prefer. There are also “dead” schools that do not require standardised tests; but if you go there no single decent company will hire you after the “mba.” Apply to a top 50 MBA to at least have a shot of getting a good job that can sponsor your H1B. See Bloomberg’s ranking of MBAs https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-best-business-schools/ It’s also advisable you hire a consultant to “polish” you; by consultant, I do not mean “agents,” I mean like this: http://www.expartus.com 1 Like 1 Share |

LagosismyHome: Absolutely. I think people should evaluate “the person” on their own merits and track record and not by generalisation. There are Nigerians who just want to do earn a honest living, and those who just want to be crooked. |

Osunguy: Do not fear, UNILAG is very efficient with this. Transcripts are never prepared unless there is a request; once your results are uploaded by CITS your transcripts can be prepared the next minute. I got mine within two months of completing my final exams, even before convocation. 1 Like |

chinemomah2020: No. the dad should just give instructions to his account officer or the customer care attending to him, asking that his account statements be sent to admissions@xxxxx.edu...something like this. The school does not really care about stamps or signatures because it can easily be forged. Getting the statements from an address like: xxxxx@gtbank.com or xxxxx@accessbank.com inspires a whole lot more confidence than empty stamps. |

Dancingpotato: Well, we must all take risks. Typically, programs - especially competitive ones - do not evaluate (review) applications until they have all the required data points. As you know, your application will not only be weighed WRT the minimum standards for the program, but will also be compared to other candidates especially when considering whom to fund. 1 Like |

CaptEColeJnr: I think that you should always try to get the best in everything, including undergrad education. That said, a US undergrad program is very expensive and scholarships are very rare at that level. If you can't fund it, or don't have a scholarship award then you probably shouldn't be sounding so entitled. If you're really interested in undergrad studies, you'll have more luck at EducationUSA in the US embassy. 1 Like |
