Once the market leader in the entry-level and mid-range smartphone segments, Samsung has been lagging behind for the past couple of years thank to the influx of extremely affordable devices from the likes of Xiaomi and others. Now, in an attempt to freshen up its budget offerings, Samsung has unveiled the new Galaxy J6, which is its most affordable phone yet to sport an Infinity Display with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

While this new smartphone shares many specifications and UI elements with previous Samsung J-series and On-series models, the approach to design is different this time around. With prices starting at Rs. 13,990 for the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, does the Samsung Galaxy J6 have enough under its belt to take on the might of the Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review) and ZenFone Max Pro M1 (Review)? We find out in our review.

Samsung Galaxy J6 design
The Galaxy J6 has a refreshing design. With a tall display, comfortable grip and sleek body, this mid-range handset is quite the looker. It's 8.2mm thick, making it feel just about comfortable in hand. Added to that, as we noted in our first impressions, the rear panel isn't quite matte or glossy, which means it doesn't pick up unnecessary smudges.

The front of the phone sports curved-edge 2.5D glass for the 18.5:9 Infinity Display. This is another plus point for this budget offering, as Samsung has used one of its own 5.45-inch Super AMOLED panels with an HD+ (720x1480 pixels) resolution. As is the case with AMOLED displays, the colours are crisp and accurate, the blacks are deep, and the brightness is decent, though some find the resolution to be disappointing.

There are definitely a few shortcomings though. In classic Samsung tradition, the Galaxy J6 skips the crucial ambient light sensor giving us no option of an auto-brightness toggle. Having to manually adjust the brightness level repeatedly during our review period was particularly frustrating.

Above the display, there's an 8-megapixel selfie camera, a selfie light and the earpiece. Below it, for the first time on a Samsung Galaxy J-series smartphone, is no physical button. Instead, the Home, Back, and Overview buttons are all on screen. Depending on which apps support the extended screen resolution, the buttons may or may not appear on screen at all times.

On the left, the Galaxy J6 has the volume buttons, one tray for SIM 1, and a second tray for SIM 2 and a microSD card. The right of the handset sports a lock/ power button and a small slit for the speaker. The Micro-USB port, microphone, and 3.5mm headphone socket are placed at the bottom. Finally, the retail box includes a 5V/ 1A (5W) power adapter, a USB cable, a SIM ejector tool, a wired headset, and a couple of quick start guides.

Samsung Galaxy J6 specifications and software

The new Galaxy J6 is powered by Samsung's in-house octa-core Exynos 7870 SoC, which is one of the most disappointing aspects of this mid-range offering. This processor has been Samsung's favourite choice for budget models for the past couple of years now, with the segment begging for a refresh. We are reviewing the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but Samsung has also launched the Galaxy J6 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The latter is currently not available for sale in India, and Samsung's official website shows a "Coming Soon" banner as of filing this review.

Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE on either SIM at a time, so all compatible Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea SIM cards can take advantage of LTE calls. There's also single-band (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone socket, and FM radio, but no NFC. Wi-Fi calling is also an option available in the Settings on supported network. As has been seen with previous Galaxy J and Galaxy On-series smartphones, Samsung has skimped when it comes to the sensors. This phone only has a proximity sensor and accelerometer, and no ambient light sensor or gyroscope.

In terms of software, the Samsung Galaxy J6 runs the Samsung Experience 9.0 UI on top of Android 8.0 Oreo, which we've previously seen on the company's most premium handsets. The Android security level patch is dated 1 April 2018. The home screen gets a default weather and time widget on top, the Google search bar, and shortcuts to apps from Google and Microsoft. Swiping to the left reveals the Bixby Home screen that has a plethora of widgets and apps showing Facebook trends, your schedule, reminders, YouTube suggestions, weather information, news, and a lot more.

Samsung has an image recognition-based shopping app called Samsung Mall, which ships with the Galaxy J6. Having made its debut with the Galaxy On7 Prime earlier this year, Samsung Mall gave us fairly accurate suggestions for gadgets and clothing, and has improved significantly since its launch. It detected clothing patterns well, but often mistook the category. For instance, on scanning a checked shirt, the results displayed things like gloves and handkerchiefs. Samsung Mall redirects users to shopping sites such as Amazon and Flipkart, and you can't buy things directly within the app.

Another advertised feature is Samsung Pay Mini. As opposed to the NFC-based Samsung Pay for physical transactions, Pay Mini is just a native Samsung app that can be used to make payments through UPI and mobile wallets. You could just use native apps, including, BHIM, Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Tez, if you're used to them. You cannot disable or uninstall the Samsung Pay Mini app. Fortunately, there are no preinstalled Samsung-branded video and music apps; instead these are optional downloads from Samsung's My Galaxy app store.

The Settings menu is filled with features and accessibility options, much like every other Samsung offering in the market. Chat Over Video is a nifty feature that shows your incoming WhatsApp and SMS messages as translucent overlays while you're watching videos. There's even a translucent keyboard so you can reply without pausing. S Bike mode, which debuted with last year's J-series models, aims to promote two-wheeler safety by disabling calls and notifications when you are in motion.


There's a Dual Messenger mode for certain social media apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp, a panic mode for contacting emergency numbers, one-handed mode, easy mode, and a lot more. One neat shortcut is the ability to scroll through the notifications shade with the fingerprint sensor, so that you don't have to stretch to reach the top of the tall screen.

Samsung Galaxy J6 performance, cameras, and battery life
We had the 3GB RAM variant in for review, and except on rare occasions, we did not feel that the RAM was inadequate. However, it remains to be seen how this holds up with long-term use. Animations and transitions on the Galaxy J6 have been cut down to a minimum. There is frequent stutter in the Bixby Home screen, which is unfortunate but expected considering the amount of content shown. There's no digital compass or gyroscope, so Google Maps cannot show what direction you are facing.

We tried a few popular casual games such as Temple Run 2 and Subway Surfers, as well as the heavier Asphalt 8. The experience was fine and the Galaxy J6 did not heat up during gameplay and the battery level fell by very little.

Face recognition works fine most of the time in daylight as long as you are directly facing the camera, but is non-operational in low light even when the screen brightness is turned up to the maximum. Thankfully, we found the narrow rear-mounted fingerprint sensor to be snappy and accurate throughout the review period.


As for benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy J6 scored 63,201 in AnTuTu and 3,854 on PC Mark Work 2.0. In Geekbench 4, the single-core score was 728, while the multi-core score was 3,544. Samsung's preloaded browser performed fairly well with a score of 75.8 in Basemark Web 3.0. The GFXBench T-Rex gaming test score was 18fps. These results are extremely sub-par when compared to those of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, which are priced very similarly to this new offering from Samsung.

Audio is fairly loud and the speaker is not blocked when this phone is lying either face-up or face-down. However, a lot of people might hold this phone in a way that muffles audio considerably when listening to music or watching videos.

The single rear camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with an f/1.9 aperture. This is similar to the specifications we saw on the Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime. Much like with that phone, colours in daylight photos are washed out, and dynamic range is below average. Even close-up shots are disappointing, with bland colour reproduction, which can easily be noticed on the Super AMOLED display. There's an HDR mode but that doesn't help much in improving picture quality. Apart from that, there are other modes such as Night, Beauty, Panorama, and Pro, but these also do little to improve shots.


As for the front, the Galaxy J6 has an 8-megapixel camera with the same f/1.9 aperture. A selfie light has been provided, which is not to be confused with an actual flash. Instead, it provides slightly better illumination to help cut down on noise in low light. Daylight selfies are fine, but ones taken at night are usually not worth posting on social media. You can use the Stickers mode in the Camera app to add one of several funky selfie filters, a feature seen on Samsung's flagship S-series phones as well. Video recording has a full-HD (1080p) resolution limit, and autofocus is just okay. Videos are shaky in the absence of any kind of EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation).

Samsung is promoting the Galaxy J6 for its battery life. The 3000mAh capacity might look relatively low on the specifications sheet, but this phone manages great standby time. It lasts for an entire day on a full charge with regular use including a couple of hours of video streaming, which is on par with other options in the same price segment. In our HD video loop battery test, the smartphone lasted 14 hours and 10 minutes, beating the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 and inching close to the score of the Redmi Note 5 Pro which has a larger 4000mAh battery. However, charging is frustrating as it takes almost an hour to get to 40 percent, and more than 2.5 hours to touch the 100 percent mark.


Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy J6 is not up to the mark in terms of power or value for money, compared to its contemporaries such as the Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review) and ZenFone Max Pro M1 (Review). Given the option between the Exynos 7870 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, the latter is undoubtedly the more powerful one. The Galaxy J6 is priced starting at Rs. 13,990 for the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but the version with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage costs Rs. 16,490. The slow charging and mediocre cameras are also pretty major downsides, but the biggest problem is that Samsung has skimped on basic features such as an ambient light sensor, digital compass, and fast charging, which could be dealbreakers for many people.

However, this phone is a much-needed refresh in Samsung's budget series, and won't get lost in the crowd. Some of its advantages are its Super AMOLED Infinity Display, sleek and lightweight body, and reliable battery life. Overall, it does have some appeal, and is also not likely to suffer from the same availability issues as most its competitors.

almost the same designs. Both the phones have a
glass back with curved sides and a reflective band
running across it. And with a dual lens camera of the
same mega pixels at their backs. But while the look is
similar there are some differences. the Huawei Mate
10 comes with a dimension 150.5 x 77.8 x 8.2mm
and weight of 186g, while the Huawei Mate 10 Pro
has a dimension of 154.2 x 74.5 x 7.9mm and weight
178g. Not a huge difference then, but the Mate 10 Pro
is longer, slimmer and lighter than the Mate 10. The
two phones comes in different selection of colors. The
Huawei Mate 10 comes in Mocha Brown, Black,
Champagne Gold and Pink Gold, while the Mate 10 Pro

While the Huawei Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch 1,440 x
2,560 screen with a pixel density of 499 pixels per
inch, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a 6.0-inch 1,080 x
2,160 display with a pixel density of 402 pixels per
inch. The Mate 10 Pro also has a super-widescreen
18:9 aspect ratio, while the Mate 10 has a more
conventional 16:9 one. It’s not all different though, as
both phones sport minimal bezel and support HDR10
content.

OPERATING SYSTEM AND MEMORY
Both phones lands with an octa-core Kirin 970 chipset

The reMarkable Tablet is good for Natural writing and
drawing, with a Lightweight design, Textures shift with
utensil and a Cloud-sync and LiveView with drawing

lives up to its name, but it's expensive and doesn't
serve as a regular tablet. It can't do as much as other
tablets, either, as it's made for writing, drawing and
reading (epubs and PDFs). But when it comes to
writing, the reMarkable is the best tablet on the
market A simple-looking device, the reMarkable (the
first product of a company by the same name)
features a white plastic frame and bezel, an aluminum
back panel and its 10.3-inch Canvas display, which
consists of five proprietary technologies. The tablet's
modest-looking Marker stylus, with eight replaceable
tips, is included. The reMarkable's amazing writing
experience is a one-of-a- kind feature that when
combined with its cloud-sync capabilities and
Photoshop-esque editing, makes it a great tool for
note takers and artists alike. Writing on the slate is
one of the most realistic, comfortable experiences on a
tablet, rivaled only by using an actual pen and paper.
Of course, $599 may be a tough price to swallow for
some, especially when the device is made just for
writing, drawing and reading. For a more feature-rich
tablet, consider the $649 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which

expensive, though, and writing on its glass doesn't

be used to be truly believed, as writers and artists
looking for the best marriage of digital and analogue
won't find a better option.
The reMarkable weighs 12.5 ounces and measures
10.1 x 6.9 x 0.3 inches, so it's large enough to give
you a whole page to write on and light enough that
you can hold it for a while. It's lighter and larger than
the 10.5-inch Apple iPad Pro (17.3 ounces, 9.4 x 6.8
x 0.2 inches) and heavier and larger than the 6-inch E
Ink Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (7.2 ounces, 6.7 x 4.6 x

DISPLAY
The remarkable is designed with 10.3-inch Canvas
display, a monochromatic digital-paper surface that
Incorporates the E Ink Carta technology. While this
panel's on-screen buttons are touch-sensitive, you'll
need to use the slate's Marker stylus to do everything
else. The reMarkable's viewing angles Just like with
actual paper and is nearly perfect.
WRITING AND DRAWING WITH THE MARKER
One of my favorite things about the reMarkable is
letting other people use it. I got looks of shock and
elation nearly every time someone wrote on the slate.
That reaction is warranted because of how good the
act of writing feels. The extremely natural sensation
you feel while drawing comes from moving the pen's
felt tip against the Canvas display. This is a much
more comfortable feeling than writing with the Apple
Pencil on an iPad's glass screen. The one place where
this stylus doesn't stand up to the iPad Pro's Pencil
(or to Microsoft's Surface Pen) is latency. The Marker
got a 55 millisecond delay, which is more than twice
as long as the times from the Apple Pencil (20ms)
and Surface Pen (21ms).
Not only is the Marker's input sensitive to pressure
and tilt, but the Pencil tool also features its own tilt
mode, so you can write as if you're at an angle while
not adjusting your input. The reMarkable's most
impressive trick is that it switches the feeling you get
when writing for each of the different writing tools
(Pen, Pencil and Brush). With each digital utensil, you
get a different amount of friction. Pencil offers the
most friction, while the pen gives a medium amount of
resistance and the brush delivers the smoothest
experience.
OPERATING SYSTEM AND APPLICATION
The reMarkable uses Codex, its own OS. This is a
custom version of Linux that's optimized for low-
latency e-paper. This means you get a brand-new
user interface to learn, one that mostly revolves
around unfamiliar icons. The reMarkable includes 56
templates, such as lined, gridded and sheet music.
reMarkable's proprietary cloud sync means your
documents stay backed up to the cloud, as each
reMarkable comes with 8GB of cloud storage
(mirroring the tablet's local storage). The desktop and
mobile applications let you access your files from
anywhere, with or without the slate. Third-party
storage isn't available yet, but it's a planned feature
for the end of 2017.
The reMarkable apps for Windows and macOS allow
you to export notebooks and documents as PDF and
PNG files. The tablet also comes with a tool built for
those who enjoy creating for a live audience. LiveView
mirrors your current document to the macOS and
Windows apps.
PERFORMANCE
The reMarkable runs on an ARM A9 CPU with 512MB
of RAM, which shows when pages pause between
loading and buttons take a second to respond to
touch. The reMarkable runs as fast as most E Ink
devices (such as Amazon's Kindles), but it's certainly
less snappy than an iPad.
BATTERY LIFE

The South East Renewal Group (SERG) has blamed
the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for the recent altercation
between the Nigeria army and Kanu's followers.
Charles Mbani, the national president of the group
said: “You must have, like other Nigerians, watched
recent events in Igboland with a sense of
foreboding, concern and utmost dread. Images
emerging from the southeast, our homeland, are as
troubling as they are worrisome with the most
recent being those of youths attacking military
detachment with all manners of crude weapons
including catapults, cudgels, machetes, sticks and
others.
“These youths are being put up to this mischief after
being brainwashed by the so called Indigenous
People of Biafra, IPOB, which is now militarizing
them as its fighting force. These misguided youths
have been deceived into thinking they are making
the right sacrifice of protecting Nnamdi Kanu, the
IPOB leader whereas the only thing they sacrificing
is their lives that they are throwing away on the
alter of ignorance.
“The soldiers attacked by these uncouth elements
are the ones taking part in Egwu Eke II (Operation
Python Dance II), which we find most ridiculous
considering that the same operation last year
ensured that kidnappers and armed robbers that
were desecrating our land were curtailed to a point
where Igbos enjoyed peaceful 2016 Yuletide. We are
therefore wondering if there is a nexus between
IPOB and the crimes being eradicated by the

those who love the region should do so well to warn

He said: “May we emphasise that Igbo leaders of
thought must tarry no further in doing the needful
before it’s too late. The conspiracy of silence on the
part of these leaders is what has made Nnamdi
Kanu fill the resulting vacuum as a demagogic evil
that is leading out youth population astray. This
disposition of indifference was displayed as the hate
speech championed by Kanu gained momentum until
it got to a point where other ethnic groups in
Nigeria basically developed a morbid collective
disdain for the Igbo.
“The hate speech has now crystalized and is the
bedrock of the aggression being exhibited against
the military. It nothing urgent is done the next
phase in this ugly evolution could threaten our
existence as a people.

that the IPOB youths have been brainwashed into

politicians in Igboland that see the madness being
advocated by Nnamdi Kanu as something to be
milked for political capital. We have in the recent
days seen such politicians rushing to tacitly endorse
violence as the answer when other ethnic

violence is activated as being advocated the forget
that our land would burn while other parts of the
country continue with their life."

A pro-Biafra group, Biafra National Guard, has warned the Nigerian army to put an end to its ongoing Operation Python Dance II in the southeast or its members will begin self defense. According to a statement sent to Daily Post, the group said the military operation in the southeast is a plot to end the lives of secession agitators in the area.
The statement reads: “We fear not; we dine, sleep and live hostility and will defend our lives. BNG continues to make it loud and clear that Biafra needs activation of self defense as enshrined in UN 2007 charter to restore Biafra and that is what BNG represents. “Our commander; General Innocent Orji does not subscribe to defenseless agitation, but to continue on the path of non-violence, Nigeria must withdraw lethal force which might be impossible because we are considered slaves that deserve death. Our commander knows the terrain of self defense as enshrined in 2007 UN Charter on the rights of indigenous people. “As we continue to make it clear; self defense is due because our people have continued to face death, promised to be crushed by Buhari and the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra whom BNG is saddled with responsibility of defending has come under severe threat as well."
“The people of Biafra and her leadership fully support the decision of Biafra National Guard because we are not violent agitators but out to stop the unlawful killing of our people. Biafra National Guard is not a violent group rather Nigerian military is violent to our people; killing and maiming us and BNG is an outfit designed to curb the wanton killing of Biafrans. We have never been violent in any shape or form; but would resist unlawful killing of our people. “Unlike Nigerian military that find strength against unarmed and peaceful civilians; we the Biafra National Guard find strength against unlawful hostile, undisciplined, happy-trigger soldiers that violate human rights, crush peaceful and law- abiding citizens. Operation Python Dance II in Southeast is a show of cowardice; BNG is not Southeast movement but Biafra military wing. “The blood of the people of Biafra makes the python dance and merry; our molestation makes the python happy and laugh. Road blocks in Biafra make the python dance and party round, throw money like politicians. Molesting our women makes the python dance but very soon Biafra National Guard shall make the python shade tears by denying the python the evil deeds that makes it dance. "The people of Biafra and her leadership must urgently support and pray for her military wing because BNG is the pride of the people and the backbone of the leadership of the people of Biafra under Nnamdi Kanu whom the people have chosen," the statement reads.

history and the past experiences in Nigeria, below
are some of them.

● 1. Arrest of Kanu and resulting crisis
In July 2009, the Nigerian military captured
Mohammed Yusuf the leader of the Boko Haram
sect at his parents-in-law's house. They transferred
him to the custody of the Nigerian police force. The
police summarily executed Yusuf in public view
outside the police headquarters in Maiduguri.
What followed next is a tale of terrorism, bombing
and bloodshed that has lasted 8 years and cost
thousands of Nigerian lives.
If the Nigerian army toes the same line with
Nnamdi Kanu, then another uprising might just be
expected in Nigeria.

●2. Arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and the quelling of the Biafra
agitation
More than 350 IMN followers, led by firebrand
cleric Ibrahim Zakzaky, were killed in clashes with
the military in the northern town of Zaria in
December 2015. Since Zakzaky's arrest, there have
been disturbances, but largely the Shiites have
been silent.

agitation will quieten down out of fear.


●3. Civil war
The Nigerian civil war in 1967 was a result of the
agitation for Biafra and the decision of the
Nigerian government to answer with military
action. There have been fears that the country
might be headed down the same path and the
deploying of Nigerian military to the South East
might be the spark that will ignite the fires of war.

● 4. International outrage
On November 24, 2016, Amnesty International, a
watchdog on crimes against humanity published a
report that Nigerian security forces, led by the
military, embarked on a chilling campaign of
extrajudicial executions and violence resulting in
the deaths of at least 150 peaceful pro-Biafra
protesters in the south east of the country.
Should there be a violent outcome as a result of
this current siege by the Nigerian army, it will not
be surprising to hear condemnations and calls for
sanctions by the international community.

souvenirs with you
●11. Do not play loud music in your car when
driving
●12. Do not undertake any interstate journey, unless
it is absolutely necessary. You must target to arrive
your destination before it gets dark
● 13. Avoid fixing weddings, burials or any form of
function that will require the gathering of many
people
●14. Females should as much as possible move
around in pairs.
Meanwhile, the Igbo National Council (INC) has
given the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General
Tukur Buratai, a 21-day ultimatum to end the
Operation Python Dance II in the south-east.
The group said the region is not a war zone and
asked the army chief to withdraw all the soldiers
posted to the area within 21 days or be sued at the
International Criminal Court (ICC).
