Looking exhausted and pale, apparently unable to fathom how she managed to make it to her Festac home last Friday, after she was gang -raped in an uncompleted building on Ago palace way, in Okota area of Isolo, Lagos, Sandy , as she is fondly called, recalled with pain what she described as the worst experience she has ever had in her 20 years of existence.

On closer observation, the Anambra state- born bar attendant in a popular hotel in Festac Town was discovered to have visible mark of bite on her right shoulder and chest, coupled with bruises on other parts of her body, an injury she reportedly sustained in her bid to free herself from the rapists.

Unfortunately, her strength could not match those of the two men, as one of them reportedly pinned her two hands down while the other pinned her two legs to the ground as he unfastened her belt. At a point, she became weak and watched helplessly as one of the men had carnal knowledge of her against her will.

As if that was not enough , the principal perpetrator, a 200 level student of the Lagos State University, identified as Olushola Owolabi , took some photographs of Sandy in her nude , threatening to paste it on her facebook for the whole world to see if she revealed what transpired to anybody including the Police.

the suspects

Narrating her four hour-ordeal in the hands of Olushola and his alleged accomplice, Tayo Adewale, Sandy said, “ Shola happens to be a casual friend and we have been discussing on phone before he took advantage of me. He is not my boyfriend and the relationship is just a platonic one.I had problem in my place of work because I did not show up owing to my father’s illness and I was sacked.

In the course of my looking for a job , I went to Surulere last Friday and on my way back home, Shola called me on the phone and invited me over to Century hotel, Ago. I went because I needed someone to pour my heart out to. But when I got there, he asked me to follow him to his house for him to change into another cloth and I did, unaware that he had something else up his sleeve.

On reaching his house, he started delaying and before I knew it, he approached me, wanting to handle me but I refused. Then all of a sudden, he started hitting me and dragging my cloth while his friend, Tayo started unzipping my trouser.

He has never asked me out before, neither have I collected money from him. He usually comes to buy drink from the hotel I work.

He started right from 3pm and ended at about 7pm non stop . All my plea fell on deaf ears. He even brought out a knife and threatened to kill me saying nothing would happen at the end of the day.

When he was done, I could not wear my cloths because they were in shreds. He gave me his to wear home and warned me not to tell anyone threatening that if I did, he would paste the picture of my nude in my face book for all to see.

I can not tell how I managed to get home because before then, I was sick . But I summoned courage and told my cousin and together we went to the hospital where I was given some medication.

Policemen from Festac division were reportedly contacted , consequent upon which the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Usman Ndanbabo, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), detailed some of his men to effect the suspects arrest. But only one of them, Tayo was arrested on Sunday while the principal suspect, Olushola reportedly fled his home.

But the DPO, as gathered, directed his men to keep watch over the premises , until Olusola surfaced Wednesday , only to be arrested. Olushola who admitted to have actually forced Sandy against her will, claimed he did it out of love for her.

A 16-year-old girl (name withheld) from Kogi State has been abducted and forced into marriage in Orun-Ekiti, Ekiti State, by a traditional chief to mark his chieftaincy installation rite. She was allegedly taken away from her parents under the pretence that the traditional ruler of the Orun-Ekiti wanted to see her.

The girl, now in the custody of the Ekiti State Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, was said to have been kept secretly for seven days by the chief before the state government came to her rescue. Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, Mrs Fola Richie-Adewusi said the action was against the state Laws on Gender Violence Prohibition and Child Right.

The chief, who allegedly abducted the girl, allegedly approached the parents with a horse tail believed to be an authority from the monarch of Orun-Ekiti, saying the girl was needed in the palace. Speaking on the issue, the Women Commissioner disclosed that the alleged chief only wanted to use his little wealth to oppress the poor and forcefully marry the little girl without the parents’ consent.

The chief, according to the commissioner, has been arrested but released on bail while the government has started the process of legal action against him. When Daily Sun met the Oloja of Orun-Ekiti, Oba Osalusi Oluwasola, explained that the chief came to him that he has gotten an “Abokoaye” (a young girl that a man who is a about to get chieftaincy title must have before the rites could be completed) and that the monarch should give him an authority to bring the girl to the palace.

He explained that he did not know the agreement between the man and the girl’s parents, saying he believed that the man should have consulted the parents and done all the necessary things for the parents to give him their daughter.
The Oloja maintained that it was custom in their community as he did similar thing when he was about to be made a High Chief as Oloja in the 1970s.

According to the monarch, it was his family member who helped him look for his “Abokoaaye” whom he said was an under-aged girl then but emphasized that he sent the girl back to her parents after all the rites had been done and exercised patience until three years when the girl was matured enough to be married before he brought her home as new wife.

He appealed to the government for understanding, saying it was their custom and if it was contrary to the law of Ekiti State now then such a thing would not happen again and that the chief should go and do all he could to appeal to the parents of the girl, and if needed he should wait for the age the law specified.

All efforts to reach the chief on phone failed and the monarch said he had travelled down to Ado-Ekiti and that he did not know when he would be back.

Ilorin: Police arrest Fulani with human parts

by Success Nwogu, Ilorin

The Acting Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Command, Mr. Al-Hassan Akor, on Tuesday said the command had arrested a suspect, Mr. Ibrahim Abubakar, with human parts.

Abubakar, 35, a Fulani, said he is from Ilorin but resides in Omu Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Akor while speaking to THE PUNCH in Ilorin on Tuesday said the command got information on March 26, that a commercial motorcyclist, Mr. John Olalekan a native of Otun Ekiti in Ekiti State, was missing.

According to Akor, immediately the command got the report, it mobilised a search team that worked in collaboration with members of a vigilance group and the people in the area.

He said two days later, on March 28, Olalekan's lifeless body was found in a bush near Government Day Secondary School.

“One hand was completely cut off and some other parts removed. Some parts of the body had been removed. The head and the right hand from the shoulder were cut off.”

Akor said owing to the nature of the killing, they suspected that it must have been for a ritual purpose.

He stated that with good intelligence and reliable information, they were able to apprehend one of the suspected ritualists, adding that the command and other security agencies were working assiduously to arrest other members of the syndicate.

He said when the command searched Abubakar's house, the suspect claimed that the hands discovered in his house were that of a monkey.

“The dead body was later taken to the mortuary. It was on Tuesday morning that we got information by our men that there is a man they suspected.”

Luxury bus robbery: Police arrest five suspects

by Segun Olatunji and Eniola Akinkuotu

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested five suspects for the robbery attack on the luxury bus that was conveying 42 female pupils of Holy Rosary College, Enugu, on Saturday.

acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar

The spokesperson for the command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, told our correspondent on the telephone that one of those arrested was the bus' driver, whose name was not disclosed.

Adejobi said the driver was assisting with investigations and had identified one of the suspects.

He said, "We've arrested the driver of the luxury bus conveying the pupils from Enugu that were robbed on Saturday at Ogbere as well as four other suspects.

"Others are Oni Olopari, Innocent Omule, Gbenga Adebayo and Samuel Luca. The driver has identified Luca as one of the robbers who attacked them that night.

"The men were arrested at Ijebu Ife and Ijebu Mushin in Ogun State where some items were recovered including a chair taken from inside one of the broken-down vehicles at the scene."

Adejobi added that investigations were still ongoing and assured members of the public that the command would do all within its power to ensure that the culprits were brought to book.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that the 42 girls were attacked by the robbers and some of them raped after being dragged into the bush.

The luxury bus with registration number Lagos XW 875 LSR had broken down around 11pm at Ogere, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The bus belongs to Ekene Dili Chuckwu Nigeria Limited and was hired by the school to convey the pupils to Lagos for the end of the term holiday.

Although the police denied knowledge of the rape, one of the girls, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity at her parents' residence in Lagos on Monday, said some of the pupils were raped by the hoodlums.

The girl, who said she was not raped because she was undergoing menstruation had said, "The robbers collected N1, 200 from me as well as my mobile phone. When we were dragged into the bush, we were ordered to lie down. The robbers would immediately point the flash light at you and say 'spread your legs open.'

"The robbers defiled some of the girls but when it got to my turn and I opened my legs, they saw blood between my thighs and this was because I was on my menstrual cycle.

"The robbers thought I had been raped already, passed me by and continued raping the other girls."

Adejobi had said the place where the vehicle had broken down was becoming notorious because of the spate of such robberies.

Meanwhile, The PUNCH online readers have continued to expressed shock and disbelief at the barbaric act with some of them accusing the police of incompetence.

One of them, Afowowe Olawale, wondered why the police found it difficult most of the time to respond to distress calls.

Olawale said, "My question is where were the police before the incident? Why did it take them hours to dispatch their men to get the robbers arrested in time? it's becoming consistent in that area! Why?

"The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, should do something about this now before it's too late. Ogun is a flashpoint for thieves. I was also robbed around Babcock University last year March only for the police to come almost two hours after the operation.

"The thieves went with my phones, and other valuables of other passengers of the vehicles I boarded. Some of the passengers were inflicted with machete cut. It's like the Commissioner of Police, the Area Commander, and the Divisional Police Officer do not have a solution to the incessant robberies in the area. Ogun has been taken over by armed robbers."

Another reader, Moses Orogun, queried the competence of the police if they acknowledged that the area where the girls were attacked was notorious and yet could not prevent crimes there.

He said, "So, the police are aware that the area where the robbery and rape occurred was notorious for such, why did they not take pre-emptive measures such as regular patrols to prevent it from happening?

"I want to believe this is the handiwork of these disgruntled policemen who are not happy with the abolition of roadblocks nationwide. They are behind this heinous crime to force the police authorities to reintroduce roadblocks all over the country."

Another reader, Olanrewaju Jimoh, said, "The solution to the issue is to let policemen be in the office for prosecutions only. The army should take over the patrol of all the highways in the country both day and night."

Because the going is rough for the core North, the so-called Middle Belters are now trying to extricate themselves from the grip of the North. But we must not be so shallow-brained as to forget that they have ruled Nigeria as long as the core North have.

Gowon,
IBB (how is he different from Hausa/Fulani?),
Abubakar (how is he different from Hausa/Fulani?),

Are past (mis)rulers from the North central states (Middle Belt). And many other of their people(Danjuma, Useni, etc) have sat in power and dispensed same even if not as the direct C-in-C

So what is the pretense as though they have not contributed even more than the core North is mismanaging Nigeria?

Violence, rape of minors worry Osun
April 4, 2012 by Tunde Odesola, Osogbo Leave a Comment

Osun State Government said on Tuesday it was worried about the incidence of r/a/p/e and violence against underage people in the state, vowing to tackle it.

Addressing a news conference, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Adetoun Adegboyega, said the incidence of r/a/p/e and violence against underage persons and women was becoming alarming.

She said, “This briefing becomes inevitable because of the incessant cases of abuse of children and women in the state, especially rape cases that have become the order of the day.

“Within the last few weeks, more than six cases of r/a/p/e of children had been recorded. What baffled the government most is that why does it have to involve children?

“The government will not fold its arms and allow such criminal activities to continue in the state of Osun. I will also seize this opportunity to appeal to all and sundry to cooperate with the government in seeing to the eradication of this ugly development in the state.

“Fortunately for the government and the people of Osun, there is an existing provision of the Child Right Law that deals with r/a/p/e of children.

“The ministry has discovered that most of these cases involve older persons who could bear these children. Are they telling the world that they can r/a/p/e their own children?”

Abuja — To many political observers, the contest to the Senate Presidency which saw ex-Governor George Akume in a pitched battle with Senator David Mark was an enactment of the age-old rivalry of political supremacy between the Tiv and the Idoma.

So much has been written and discussed on why ex-Governor George Akume should challenge his own state's man, Brigadier-General David Mark for the position that a repeat would not add anything new to the controversy.

He maintained that though Suswam is the Governor of the state, he cannot choose who becomes the next Senator for the Benue South Senatorial District pointing out that the responsibility of deciding who is the senator for the zone lies exclusively with the Idoma people.
Adaji opined that 80 percent of those who attended Senator Matk’s declaration have no voting rights in the zone, since they are not from Idoma land and urged Onoja’s supporters not to be deterred by the endorsement.''
