Its good thing they are doing. Eletric is too cheap here for naija and yet people dey complain say e dey expensive. Una no wan pay tax or any thing haba.
I can assure you these guys don't mean anything good for the avg. Nigerian. Remember when they introduced Fuel sales Tax of NGN1.50/litre some years ago? They said it was needed to fix our roads, my brother tell me where are the roads today? Believe it or not, if they increase the taiff on electricity now, nothing will change,as long as its thesame bunch of guys running the show.

It's amusing to read some lines here about "Nigerians are not paying bills, They prefer to bribe the Nepa men, They should pay for more to get good service" These are the "crappiest" submissions I ever read on this forum. May be some of us don't know the principles of value exchange. You have to brand your services or products before you talk about price increase. Nigerians ofcourse would rather bribe NEPA officials than pay for what they didnt use.
I have said this before and I'll say it again: WE GOT OUR INDEPENDENCE TOO EARLY!
It's simply a leadership problem

Nigerians to pay more for electricity from next month Martin Ayankola and Rasheed Komolafe - 21.02.2008 NIGERIANS should prepare to pay more for electricity as there are strong indications that the Federal Government would approve the increase in tariff by March. Minister of State for Power, Mrs Fatima Balarabe Ibrahim, said in Abuja on Wednesday that the Federal Government would finalise by March all issues relating to the multi-year tariff order, which the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had hinted it would soon introduce. Nigerians currently pay a minimum of N4 per unit of electricity and a maximum of N6. She explained that the review of the tariff would help to ensure investors recover cost and make profit. Mrs. Ibrahim noted that inappropriate pricing of electricity was hampering investments in the sector. The minister, who was delivering a paper on power generation as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification in Nigeria at the Nigeria Oil and Gas 2008, stressed that government had a plan to rehabilitate old plant units in the power stations to shore up Nigeria's power generation to 5,800 megawatts, while also intensifying efforts to further generate 6,000 megawatts from new projects. She said government was working hard at expanding the transmission network to be able to achieve 10,000 megawatts of electricity. Mrs. Ibrahim said government had received concrete proposals for investments in the power sector, which included the construction of a coal-fired power station, contract financing of some projects and others. She stated that government was working hard at solving problem of gas supply to power stations soonest. NOW THEY'VE ADDED SALT TO OUR INJURY. Let us Pray !!! http://www.tribune.com.ng/21022008/news/news2.html

From the much I know of the Nigerian business idea, profits must start flowing in from day one. The idea of investing plenty over a period to reap plenty LATER seems to be seriously foreign.

"In the same way electricity continues to defy all figures and promises thrown at it. The country gropes in darkness, leaving everyone to fend power for himself. The amount and capacity of private generators in Nigeria can power all of West Africa power needs. Virtually every urban home has a generator, not to talk of offices and industries. The cost—in real money and in environmental pollution – is astronomical. Yet promises and more promises unfulfilled. Powerful interests are involved." - Tunde Fagbenle http://www.tribune.com.ng/24022008/tunde_fagbe.html

the problem of nigeria is not how well our leaders can make promises but how well they can live up to it. even if there will be increase in the value of power, no one cares but having the power is what every one care about. "nigerians survive under any condition. no matter the cost niger man go pay"

''To be faithful, loyal and honest''
The avg Nigerian would praise God for being able to get a visa to travel to other countries that do not have natural resource in the quantities that our country has been blessed with, these resources for crying out loud has been reaped ever since before our mothers started wiping our noses.
Be certain that countries that are not blessed with the enormouse resources have managed to become goldmines today, providing Utilities for their citizens.Utility we know may not be affordable for a single individual and for this same reason it becomes a Governments priority to put in place with laws to protect its citizenswhen it is not adequately provided.
Nigerian Standards are designed in rooms to suite the powers that be and our children might just come to shoulder the same problems that we had avoided. How they handle it and what international set backs they achieve as a result is really not the propblem of our leaders right now.
Our power problem is a show of the standards our leaders set for their nation and to ask for more funds really shows that there are no ideas to be presented to its citizens. We have gas flares brithening the atmosphere of our darkness ridden homes. If those flares don't go off due to gas failure, then why should we be talking about power failure. Our dams had given power to other countires it shouldn't be a problem celebrating new gas power plants for us.
It beats me every time to actually see the looks on the faces of our kids when they say the Nigerian Plegde every school day,
''To be faithful, loyal and honest''
The everytime the pleagde is being said in front of our ministers and leaders, a tear is shed by a new born Nigerian Citizen.
