Newcastle finally dumps Obafemi, others

Monday, June 8, 2009
NEWCASTLE United has finally let off Nigerian international, Obafemi Martins, among other players who earn more than £50,000 a week at the club.

 http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jun/8/606.html

Apparently preparing for life in the Championship, Newcastle board has appointed super agent, First Artists last week to begin a sale of the mega-buck earners who took the club to relegation.

The Toon have 15 players on more than £50,000 a week and the agency has been told to offload as many as possible. First on the hitlist to go is the Nigerian international who scored five goals in the season.

Others to join the petit Nigerian include Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Jonas Gutierrez and Joey Barton. Martins, 25, joined Newcastle on August 24, 2006, from Inter Milan for £10.1 million, for a five-year deal. He made his debut on August 27, 2006 in the 2–0 defeat to Aston Villa, in which he was stretchered off after a knee injury.

The agency will work closely with brokers, Seymour Pierce, in a bid to put the club in a better shape for the two consortia looking to take control. "They have offices all around the world," said a source. "They are seen as the ideal people to cut the playing staff. They are strong in Europe. The banks trust them.

"Newcastle is hopeful it can claw back £20m by releasing those five. Fiorentina wants Coloccini, Atletico Madrid has asked about Enrique and Barton could end up at Portsmouth. Fed-up St James' Park owner, Mike Ashley, promised bank chiefs last week that there would be a huge cull of a playing staff that costs £70m a year.

Sport of the World revealed that Ashley and Newcastle were given an extended overdraft by Barclays, although at a reduced rate from the original £40m facility, down to around £30m. That will hasten a takeover which could be completed by next month. One party looking to take control from Ashley is American based and the other has North East businessmen at its core. Ashley will leave having lost £150m in two years. By Tunde Ogunesan with Agency reports

Mike Ashley era at Newcastle was a project gone wrong!
I dont see how they can be sustainable in the championship, if they have a couple on players on over 50grand!

cutting off of the head is not the right antidot to headeach, selling off those players is not the right step to take. some of these players may wish to stay for the survival of the club.
juventus retained her goal keeper in her relegation days, now the keeper is a hero.

What are you talking about? He still emerged the joint top scorer
for the club with all the injuries he had all through the season.
Some other time he played with injury. Oba is a great player to have in a team anytime anyday.
And he definitely scored more than five. I think he scored 8goals (not too sure) over all to emerge top joint scorer with
Michael Owen for the club.

Since Ghanaian Cedis is appreciating, I guess Ashanti Kotoko or Ogbuasi Goldfields will be nice options for him Grin Grin Grin serves him right. He shouldn't have come in the first place or better still jumped at Arsenal's offer.

If Arsenal bidded for him, what does that tell you? means he is a great player.
Don't understand you guys. Not to rule out the fact that it was stupid of him not to take the offer.

Arsenal bidded for Oba Martins.Huh?? Huh
There is a difference between rumours bandied about by desperate agents looking for quick money
and a proper bid by a club!
It is not on record anywhere that Arsenal made a bid for Oba Martins.
For people that don't think much of him, I am sure Martins will play at the top level again next season.
Only that he's got to change his attitude towards the National team! Embarrassed

Arsenal actually looked into buying him but Wenger decided against it because he wasn't sure of his 'claimed' age of 22 at the time so no bid was placed.

He's not in the Super Chickens again, a Player who has played 8 world cup Qualifying Matches, 3 friendly International Matches on excuses that are flimsy.

Doesn't deserve a starting shirt, he's not the most skillful, he's just just fortunate.

Give me a Quarter of what you give Obafemi , i will score 15 goals a season and i would have scored a goal par match during the world Qualifying series.

Obafemi time don pass.

I pray and wish he never plays for Nigeria again, it was this same lacklustre attitude towars national call that costed us the match in Luanda and the draw in Abuja against Angola.

Now our first match against Mozambique we had no business drawing that game if our best chicken leg players have been available.

I just hope agaianst hope that we get a decent result in Tunisia, otherwise the march to S outh Africa would have been over after the Tunisia game.

Best of luck to our darlin Super Chickens.

Obafemi's aproach to football is a nightmare. He has skills, looks deadly when in possession of football but fumbles with it in a slick of chance. Obafemi wasted several chances of scoring a lone goal that would have kept Newcastle afloat. Though it is another big loss to Mike Ashley but i will advice him to allow at least 50% of the big-wage earners to sink with the club. If he takes drastic measures, Newcastle will extinct in a dustbin of history. Remember, Newcastle is not better than Leeds United languishing in the 3rd tie division.

our prophets of doom are at it again. oba time don pass another imbecile will say here not minding what God has for the guy.
life is full of ups and downs but the most important thing in life is that the guy in question in comfortable enough to take care of a local govt in nigeria.
assuming martins was earning 50k per week, can one imbe here multiply this by 52.
we must always known that no matter how cow purge reach, it can never come down to the size of a goat.
martins is blessed and very soon we will hear a new and good news because many clubs will surely come calling.
i wonder what this imbe in doha is doing there that is stoping him from coming to play obafemi's role in the eagles.

Am I the only one who likes Martins? IMO, he is still Nigeria's best striker when he's on form and in the right team. He is fast, his leap is phenomenal, his left foot is dangerous and he knows what to do with the ball, even before receiving it.

How are you going to judge him based on the Mozambique game? Any striker would play awful with the current Eagles, Eneramo against Kenya, Akpala against France?

I think he will rise again and you will all see. Also, he had an injury last season and the medical staffs at Newcastle couldn't figure out it was hernia, they kept treating it as a regular groin injury. If I was a coach, I'd love to have Martins in my team.
