Red Alert! American Embassy Abuja, Keep Away From The Asian Lady. by embsyNEWS: 9:32am On Jun 17, 2011
Please if anybody is going for an interview at the American embassy Abuja. There is a sadist who does not even look and sound American, but surprisingly is an interviewer. She is of Asian origin.
Now this is the word: if you love yourself and your family DO NOT GO TO HER WINDOW when she presses the buzzer for the next person, SHE DOES NOT GIVE! She takes about 30-45 minutes (believe me, you can verify from those who have gone to Abuja this year) to interview a person.
During this time she dehumanize you emotionally until you almost start telling her 'I killed my mother', she picks on anything, just anything to get you out.
My Husband and I have been regular flyer to the USA for 12years and we have 5 years UK visas, we were at the embassy with nothing to worry about, just the formalities and then they issue us a renewal.
While sitting there waiting for our turn, we saw the torture from her.
Elderly women, frequent flyers, professors, clergymen (those ones where the worst, even insulted their religion). We were looking 'is this for real, don't they have camera around to see and hear what this woman is doing and saying?' not even one person, while other interviewers where just dishing out the visas if you have the right documents.
We were the only person she gave amongst just 13 people she managed to interview that day, she didn't still give us the visa that day, told us to come back within 24 hours with more evidence after my husband told her he will litigate if she cannot tell the reason why she is refusing us (she had already handed the refusal letter to us), she now said 'ok I have been making mistakes today and I don't want you to be a victim, bring more evidence’ . Lady we brought a whole suitcase. So you know you have been making ‘MISTAKES’ whoa!
Everyone knows her, from the securities there, to the pickup drivers to tour agents, you name it. The next day we went was no difference.
Well while waiting for out turn prior to our first interview, the guy just before us made a smart move. He just stood up and went to the toilet. We should have done the same, because after us others made excuses to the toilet.
I hope this alert gets to the front-page many families, professionals, school kids have been her victim (Rejection without a reason). YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY NO TO HER WINDOW AND PATIENTLY WAIT FOR ONE THAT WILL AT LEAST GIVE YOU A FAIR HEARING, YES YOU HAVE THE RIGHT!
If you have experienced her torturing applicants or have been a victim, please feel free to share your experience. It will go a long way to help.

As someone who studied psychology, I'm not at all surprised at the behaviours of the Asian woman: The interviewer, being a female, and of Asian origin would most likely want to prove that she can do a better job than her white male colleagues, and therefore she is more likely to over-act to prove her seriousness. The same thing goes with female police officers, when you get into their trouble, they are more likely to be merciless than their male colleagues. Have you considered why short people are over-reactive when one has a dispute with them? They take this unnecessary offensive measures because they think you are trying to intimidate them for reason of their small status.

Na wa o.
The fear of 'Women In Office' is the beginning of wisdom.
Kind of reminds me of a rude Togolese lady at the French embassy in Lagos, I experienced her some years back.
Funny enough, I also threatened to bring a lawsuit against the embassy should she dare refuse me a visa with no explanation. She went and returned with her supervisor, who asked her to be quiet and apologized to me.

I got lots of stories like that. Once, entering the US, I didn't fill out something properly on the landing card. The TSA lady just bounced me to the back of the line. Next turn out it was a dude, who asked why I got bounced earlier. When I told him, he just smirked and said 'Don't mind her. She's just a frustrated b****.'

Yes, I know the woman very well. She was once married to a Nigerian (I wont mention the tribe) in the states where she did live with our Naija guy. But turns out the bobo was just using her, milking her dry. Suddenly the guy left for no apparent reason and returned to Nigeria without the lady's knowlegde. Since then, she came to work here and is known as the woman jilted by a Nigerian, hence the attitude. But beyond all that she still likes black guys, if you ask her out she ll not decline. That is if you can overlook the nasty facade. Try compliment her when you get to her side. Goodluck.

Inaccurate information and dangers of a single side story! What do you expect when people don't prepare for interviews and some probably has forged documentation to support their applications? In all the years I appeared at the US embassy in Lagos, I can safely conclude that most of the interviewers are quite generous, 3 examples worth sharing:

Case 1: A guy carelessly boasted that his wife had their last baby in the US just to convince the interviewer that he has been traveling quite some bit, then he got stuck at the point of showing proof of payment for the childbirth since neither himself or the wife was a US resident or citizen. He was viciously denied for abusing US medicare system.
Case 2: An unmarried lady came for dropbox interview (back then) and was feeling fly about getting the visa but could not convince the interviewer that she will not stay put in the US though she returned the first time. No ongoing schooling in Nigeria, no property, nothing whatsoever.
Case 3: A guy was going to attend a conference and had paid some miserable amount of money for it (like <$1,000), then he got challenged on supporting his participation with his past activities in Nigeria. This guy struggled and sweated so much but didn't have any explanation, felt pretty embarrassed at his folly as a fellow Nigerian.

If you are confident of your case, there is no way you can be treated like trash (Asian woman or no Asian woman). You can politely challenge the interviewer and that is the confidence lacking in most people; negotiating from a position of weakness and carrying it on your face is dangerous.
I got refused once in 1998 (actually asked to withdraw my application), the interviewer asked why I wasn't married despite my status! I responded questioning him if it was a crime to be unmarried at my age in America, I had been in the US earlier and didn't overstay. I could have refused to withdraw my application and appealed any refusal but I was not so keen on the trip and wasn't ready for any battle. I have never had any refusal since then.
At another time, I was interviewed by a very bag (fat) lady at the US embassy in Lagos and was the only person she granted a visa that day till I left, even the security guys rejoiced with me. I never knew the lady was known for such and some folks ahead of me took the "toilet route" (just as narrated by the poster) just to avoid the woman - didn't realize this until after interacting with one of the security folks.

Every applicant for non-immigrant visa is viewed as a potential immigrant and the onus is on the applicant to prove otherwise.
Bottom line is to get prepared for the interview, do not present documents you cannot defend, talk to those who have been through it and succeeded, be confident, have nice disposition (afterall life wont end soon and your life doesn't depend on the visa) and the interview will be a piece of cake.

personally, i think our government is responsible for the unruly treatment metted out to prospective tourists/visitors to the United States. i think the ways the interviews are conducted does not give cognisance to the issue of privacy, why would you expose personal information when conducting interviews, because the way the process is, is that many others waiting for their turn get to listen in to the coversation between the interviewer and prospective travellers,

i guess its because a lot of the topshots get their visas via their protocol offices so they dont feel the pinch, those americans are just out there to collect our hard earned money, refusing us visas for not tangible excuse but for vague reasons of not being sure if you are coming back and financial situation, with no recourse to appeal also, thats absolutely rubbish, at least the UK gives you an opportunity to appeal, imagine refusing an applicant because he is single, wtf? Is he not going there to spend his money? kmt

I think it's the desperation in some Nigerians who have turned the American embassy to another mecca that is responsible for the harsh treatment.these people see this, capitalize on such and treat us like piece of shiiz.I don't think the Nigerian government can really do anything about this ugly trend because the american embassy in Nigeria is a US territory in Nigeria.maybe writing a protest letter from our government to the US embassy may make some impact. . .who knows ?
