Just about starting my own 4 bedroom duplex somewhere in Sagamu, Ogun State. This thread is an eye opener. I don't even know how to go about it. Because now this means you must be ready to supervise this yourself, along with trusted engineer with building experience to provide some guide. |

Kai, Nigerian artisans could be something else even when you are trying to support them outside the work. The site supervisor I trusted so much doctored the list of items needed for electrical piping and cabling. The total cost given by the electrician was 750k but my supervisor sent a total cost of N1.550m for the job as he told them not to communicate with me as he brought them. I came to site and didn't see the electrician. Called him but he didn't pick. He later called me and told me that he had left the job. I asked why and he said he fought with my site supervisor. I asked what caused the fight. He said my supervisor have not given him his complete money in the previous piping work he did. It was there that he told me to ignore the quote of N1.1550m given to me by my site supervisor and that it won't cost us up to 700k to finish what we wanted to do. The electrician told me that my site engineer told him that he wanted to make much money from this project because he wanted to travel out of the country with his newly married wife. Note that I was even the one that gave him money to travel to his village and complete marriage rites on the lady's head as he has been living with her for more than one year. My people, trusting those people below the economic ladder in this country is nearly impossible. 32 Likes |

Only God and wisdow is out bedrock in this building construction business. Yesterday I engage a carpenter to do a work for me in one of my site. He left my work and went to drink, I just called another person immediately and replaced him, he is now calling the next day to beg, I told him to continue with his drink when he is done I will call him. Most of these workers have spiritual problems. 20 Likes |

Always looking for small small opportunity to capitalise on. This is some private business ventures o and these fellows are not still behaving themselves. Now imagine what is happening in high places (public and civil services). Not only leaders that are the problem, Nigerians themselves are also part of the problem. 12 Likes |

I got a contractor to install a transformer at a remote location in Rivers state. A small work to relieve an existing transformer in a village. Second day at work Licence Electrical Contractors task force came all the way from Port Harcourt to the site to arrest me and stop the work for not settling them then which is 20k. But penalty is going to be 100k. Who tipped them was the most puzzling situation of my being. Alas, it was my lead lineman because of 20% commission he will get from the default fine I have to pay from the association. I dropped him immediately and changed crew after payment. 12 Likes |

On a 3 bedroom flat, roof measurements were originally 274m². Contractor said it was 474m². Money has been paid already and roofing completed after it was discovered. On the day for account and reconciliation, we hired another carpenter to do the measurements of the roofing before the contractor came. He came and when asked he quoted same 474m². We said okay we doubt it so we came with our own carpenter to measure the roof. Ọmọ as our own carpenter wanted to climb the roof na so oga contractor break bottle o. Said if carpenter climb roof or dared put a tape on his work he'll stab him to death. Funny enough this contractor is a close person of ours. Na so work take stop and we had to path ways with him. Metcoppo sheets then was ₦2050 for .45mm guage. ₦2050x200= ₦410,000. Fear these people look bros! 17 Likes |

KolaShangOne: More than. In a case where you'd have about 4wall(angle) light, a centre light, pop light, and maybe a fan light all passing through one 20mm pipe to a switch box(es), is a testament to not using the amount of pipes used for conduit wiring as a measurement tool for the number of wires to be used or bought for running of wires isn't accurately ideal. In this case, you have the 4wall lights (to be controlled by two gang switches) = 2red wires of 1.5mm single core cables ,then The centre light for a chandelier = 1red wire of 1.5mm..... The pop round LED light = 1red wire of 1.5mm Then a green wire of 1.5mm for fan And a single 2.5mm wire for common(which supplies) live current to the switch box. If you total then together you'd be having (5)1.5mm wires + (1)2.5mm wire running through one 20mm pipe to a switch box. Now tell me how terribly wrong your calculations would be if you'd have used pipes used as a measurement tool. 5 Likes |

spyder880: This is why most of these artesans have shops. My suspicion was raised after they requested for too much pipe in my absence during piping stage. I studied the drawing and had estimated what I needed correctly. So when, I was given an outragrous quote for electrical wires, I bought half of what they asked for (10% higher than my estimation). On the days of drawing the cable, I stayed put at site. After the exercise, we were left with 10%-20% cables. What would have happened if I had gone with his quote? Edit: his Labour for cabling was very low probably because he expected to profit from theft of the wires as I never questioned him on the piping. 9 Likes |
