I think they only need a military president to end the war on a good note before returning to the barrack and hand over power back to the civilian vice president.

you still answered the question, all superiors aren't needed so they retire them and handover to the highest ranking officer period.

There is no way a senior military officer will serve under the head of state who happens to be Junior in rank.

Before swearing him in,they already know that he is the only and most senior serving officer.

Chad is tacitly a military dictatorship. Idriss Deby Itno had been positioning his son to succeed him. I am not surprised a bit that his son is succeeding him.
