Based on your current salary, how many months can the 55k cover your living expenses and data cost?

If it can take you up to three months or more then, with dedication, positive mindset, commitment to excellence, and willingness to over-deliver and serve/help other people sacrificially, you at be on the right track.

Here's what I suggest you do:

1) Pursue and secure freelance gigs locally first. Use Nairaland, Twitter, and Facebook to demand and search for paid writing opportunities.

2) See any gig you get at this early stage as though they are paying you to learn. So, don't focus on money. No matter how little they offer you, accept the gig and do it excellently well beyond their expectations. You are are learning on the job and they are paying you to learn.

3) Research on different types of writing genres and decide the type that fits your talent mostly and also has monitizable demands that you can easily fulfil.

4) Once you have a few stable flows of gigs coming in, you will need to raise $100 and use it to open a domiciliary account (preferably GTB). Then get a dollar debit card connected to the account.

5) Then open a PayPal business account (using your legal name). You can always upgrade this to registered business name later whenever you register your business in the future.

6) Create a Fiverr account, add your PayPal email address, and expand your freelance career globally, and start earning in USD.

7) By the way, I assume you have a laptop and stable internet connection. if your 55k savings cannot cover your living expenses and data costs for 3 months or more, then you need to either save more or see if you have another means of raiding more funds.

Do this now and thank me later.

I'll be resigning in the from my work place to venture into Freelancing full time. Why?

Because my work is so stressful. It's 6:04am and I'm already late for work. I'll be at the work place doing tedious work till 7:30pm. I'll have to be standing till that evening time of the day. It's a one man business and I risk being fired any time. From March to August, I've been able to save 55k. I don't do it drinks. Neither do I smoke or buy expensive things for myself. Well, yes. I don't have a girlfriend. So saving 55k portrays how zealous I am with the savings with the little I earn. Now, I'm facing a health challenge: a back and waist pain. So I want out.

Planning on focusing on the Freelancing route.

My worry now is, am I making the right decision?

I need your advice. What would you do if you were to be me?

To be or not to be?

My one cent:

Gigs don't come always: know this.

If you don't have a gen, a PC, and cannot go on at least 10gb data monthly, don't even bother. I'll advise you leave the animation thing cos you'll be competing with the big lords and you wouldn't stand a chance.

Focus on writing. Even foreigners leave their people and prefer blacks.

In the freelance world, it's not easy here. It's competitive too. BE more interested in satisfying your clients than the money if you want to last long.
Remember to tell him that not just all these 100K PC of 4 GIG RAM can get the job done. For 3D Animation you need a high end laptop of 16 GIG RAM with 6 GIG RAM Nvidia graphics card and a drawing graphics tablet. A lot of Data. Money to subscribe for the software you gonna use. 3D Animation is damn expensive

I know someone who borrowed 5k for data (2gig for a start) a laptop, plus tab that was previously gifted to him (used for both WiFi and writing) to start freelance writing on Upwork in December 2014. He got his first 5 hours gig in February 2015 for $3/hr (after more than 2 months of fearless grinding and efforts to land that super illusive first gig). He completed the gig with joy and got his first glowing 5-star review.

Today the guy has grown to become a digital marketing strategist and consultant purely by self development and brutal commitment to excellence and self-driven learning.

To be clear, this dude never attended secondary school once in his life let alone a university. But he's a super bright autodidact, with a vampire level of resilience.

Not bragging but I have earned your life savings of 55k just from my WhatsApp tv in one week. My highest earning was 42k in one day. If it’s money you’re looking for, it’s easier to make money now than it was 10yrs ago just grow up and look for what makes money now. F**k school. I can read and write so nothing concerns me with me the degree. Then I also double my earnings everyday with just playing 2odds. Men this is the best time to live, making money so easy.

My brother I understand how u feel. But be ready to accept any outcome of your decision.
1. Is good to start thinking about self independent
2. Always hv a backup plan before u quit, bcs the journey u are about to venture is not a child's play. Forget about motivational speakers, they will never tell u their secret but they will only motivate u and even make u feel as if working for someone is an abomination

Aaah Baba Agba. My two hands in the air for you.

@Op, let me tell you the truth. Freelancing is great but VERY COMPETITIVE. As a newbie, it can take you as much as 4-5 months before you get your first gig but if you and it comes from someone from a better country say USA or Germany, bro you are made. Pray for clients from there.
But you see clients from Bangladesh and India, please run as fast as your legs can carry. While most Bangladeshi are scammers and thrives, many Indians are workaholic. They will kill you on top $20 work. Please it's not everyone oooo.
You have to be online, apply for jobs and if you eventually get your first job, offer the client more for less. For instance, if you're to do design a page, design two or three for the client. This will surely gladen/soften his or her heart.
You also have to be very patient and keep trying. As a freelancer, you might want to delete the app. I once deleted my Upwork app after how many months. But still be optimistic. God go do am.

But now wey you say na only 50K you get bro e risky oooo. You should have sought for advice first. I'll advise you get something to do while your account grows/matures. You don't start freelancing and start earning immediately (except God too dey ya side). My friend who is my mentor here am before him account pick up and when it did, baba dey run from jobs. Na we dey help am handle gigs. Pray for this and God go do am. Amen

People make money from it but most of them exaggerate the amount they actually earn.

For instance check out the guy whose comment is 2 steps above yours, he claims he makes so much but he's here scouting for 15 people to pay him 30K each for training grin

Well, you're a strong person. Talking about working for people is not bad but you have to know one thing. Don't resign when you don't have a back up system that can sustain you.

It's not going to be easy but first build a system you're sure of then do that which you wish.

My candid advice..

But one person talked about not making it on UPWORK.

I would like to address that..

First thing your mindset works alot against or for you in making money.

You feel you can't make it on freelance site, so it would be for you.

Upwork is making guys rich and I can proudly tell you it paying.

When you know your onions well you will make it.

If you didn't register through an expert, you will likely not going to make it.. in skill smartness cannot help you..

Maybe you did it yourself and it's not paying you..

Upwork has pattern and when not followed clients won't accept your proposal.

From getting an approved Upwork account to getting a specialized profile. Your portfolio, work samples, certificate.

Many smart ones tried doing it alone and got banned.

I creat approves account for people
Just within a minute and came testifying so it's really wrong saying it's scam because you're not doing it the right way..

I can help you create yours at affordable price.
Get in touch on whatsapp 08165125994.

May well all succeed in our endeavors.

See ya life!!!

You're marketing your service to him and this is why you told him Upwork pays!

Yes, I agree Upwork pays but it takes days and weeks and even months before you'll get a gig. The process is slow. The competition is something else.

I have studied all the best Upwork proposals and applied for jobs on Upwork but for where! Nothing come out!

It's a time-wasting venture. It pays but it takes a hell of time.

You are on the right track brother....

Freelance writing was one of the best things that happened to me.

Made over 7 million naira in a year.. it's not much for a lot of people.... but very okay for me...

Upwork is really amazing if you know your way around....

Also.... I have never lacked clients
... if you don't have clients on upwork...you are probably applying wrongly or you rarely apply for jobs...

With time open your own website (microniche)

Last tip: try to improve your writing by learning copywriting.... it's another gold mine in the writing sector

Thanks I appreciate it.

I left my job for freelancing since 2017..
I bought my present car a year after and I’ve just completed my house...
Just putting some finishing touches.
Just keep on delivering top notch quality. Don’t be like those Nigerians that are just after the money.. delivering low quality gigs.

Bro...my advice is...

Before you quit the job, try and earn a reasonable amount on Freelancing

Once you are getting more than 3x of your salary, you are good to go.

Avoid naysayers...if you follow the right mentors and you are ready to pay, you will see results.

Off mic

Freelancing pays if sb who wants to help you really shows you the way.

You could be earning, at least, ₦400k monthly...but one thing is certain, you will be spending monthly to avoid downtime.
