The Dangote Group is also the biggest customer of the Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO) in Enugu.

The Federal Government had sold its shares in ANAMMCO to a private company during the Obasanjo era, but the private company couldn't run the plant properly. The Anambra and Enugu State Governments convinced Chief Godwin Okeke (G.U.O Motors) to take over the plant, but there was initially some resistance by the former owners. The resistance was overcome and ANAMMCO signed a deal to assemble Shacman trucks (Shacman is a Chinese brand).

Alhaji Aliko Dangote virtually saved the plant by placing orders for a lot of trucks, which gave the management the funds to resume production. Most of the Dangote trucks that you see around are Shacman Trucks that were made by ANAMMCO in Enugu. Click the links below to read more.

Peugeot lost their market dominance in Nigeria and indeed Africa when they switched to front wheel drive cars after the 505. Unfortunately these cars starting with the 405 could not match the ruggedness and durability of the 404,504 and 505 before them. To compound matters, Toyota became the brand name for ruggedness and reliability.

IMHO Its a waste of resources trying to revive peugeot assembly in Nigeria because Peugeot itself as a brand is finished in Nigeria and they will never sell enough cars in Nigeria to be competitive or to be a force again.

Toyota Corolla/Corona and Datsun 120y were always the dominant cars in Nigeria in the 70s and 80s because of their very low maintenance. Peug 404 that was manufactured by UAC was used mostly as a pickup and delivery vehicle, until 1978 when OBJ made Peugeot the national; car for all government agencies.

Peugeot, never increase local content beyond 10% despite government support, this meant that Peugeot was not competitive in the 1990s considering the cost of a CKD engine cost 40% of the entire vehicle, it is cheaper to import used vehicles than build in Nigeria.

Nigeria must focus on developing the automotive supply chain, ports, roads, skilled personnel, steel plants, aluminium, plastic, rubber, petrochemical and governance policies.
