Radiography is different from radiology. Only medical doctors can be radiologists.
Radiology is a branch of medicine concerned with the use of radiant energy (such as X-rays) or radioactive material in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

I am a foreign trained Radiographer currently in the process of getting my license from RRBN.

I'll advice you to go for Radiography...
1. Less Working Hours + Better Pay
2. Private Practice (I mean you could be working in a general hospital and still find time to attend and work part-time at some private centers)
3. More Career Advancement Path
4. Better starting salary both at home and abroad
5. Like @Sandland says, you'll hardly (if ever) see an unemployed Radiographer.
6. Better, like reaaally better work bonuses
7. Apart from your salary + bonuses, you'll also get extra hazard bonuses
8. You could teach part time at universities here in Nigeria (I'm not sure about abroad)

In short, Radiography is better.
more lucrative both at home and abroad .

What does the word therapeutic means?
What happens to cancerous cells when you bombard them with Radiation?
Do you think "machines" are the only source of ionizing radiation?
In Brachytherapy, a Radiotherapist injects a capsule or seed containing radioactive materials like cesium-131 into the site of the tumor to kill the cancerous cells there.
Again if you call someone a radiotherapist and argue that he doesn't carry out treatment, then what does the therapy in the name stands for?

Note: if you are still a student or you are not in the medical profession, just forget about it.

Because there is Therapeutic in your name doesn't mean you treat cancer.

Most often than not, cancers are not treated with radiotherapy alone. It can be by radiotherapy, surgery and or chemotherapy (with medicine). Most times, these patients receiving radiotherapy are also receiving chemotherapy.

Now, let's even assume you have a patient whose cancer will be cured by radiotherapy alone. That patient will be referred to a radiation oncologist (who is a medical doctor). He is the one that will draw out the treatment plan for that patient. You as a therapeutic radiographer will only follow the plan he has drawn out as the patient belongs to him, not to you. You work under his supervision and direction to deliver the radiotherapy to the patient. I want to ask you a question; if you are given a patient with cancer as a Therapeutic radiographer to treat the patient, can you do it? How many therapeutic Radiographers treat cancer patients? Please, educate yourself on the different professionals that make up the Radiotherapy team.

And as for Brachytherapy, it is a procedure carried out by a Radiotion Oncologists (who are medical doctors).

Let me redirect your question can a radiation oncologist who is a doctor treat the cancer patient by himself either? If he can then he doesn't need to include a radiographer in the plan. What we are telling u is that radiographer are also involved in treatment of patients having direct contact and assessment of patients not only in cancers. The team draw the plans together from medical physicist to radiation nurse to radiographer to radiologist it is the Radiographers that do the direct administration and dose calculation for the period of treatment. The doctors are to monitor the recovery process of the patient nothing more because they are the one to affirm that the patient is now well and book him/her for follow uo visitations.

By the way u don't search Google and have exact situations in the hospital settings I am in the field and telling u what i see but rather u are busy arguing with Google proof....am just saying all this so that the guy that asked the question can have some insight to the course or better still visit the hospital b4 making decision.

Let’s look at what it takes to be a nurse vs. a radiologist now that we’ve answered the main question.

So let’s talk about Radiology

It is important to choose what to study.

Speak with trustworthy friends and family members, and think about obtaining professional help.

Before choosing a career path to study, consider your talents and limits, as well as your likes and dislikes.
Beautiful and well detailed write-up.

Now you are talking. The therapeutic Radiographer is part of the team that treats a cancer patient with Radiotherapy. That has always been my stance.

However, it is the Radiology oncologists that calculate the radiation dose while you administer the radiation based on the dosed prescribed by the doctor (Radiation oncologist).

In addition, there are more advanced Radiotherapy that the Radiation oncologist administers himself. For example, Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiotherapy are almost always administered by the Radiation oncologist.

I get u but what I want u to know is that a radiographer is the only medical personnel licensed to bombard or administer radiation dose by law in any treatment practice or anywhere human or non human be it brachytherapy or others except if ionizing or non ironizing radiation is not involved in the treatment process eg like chemotherapy again doctor may administer anaesthesia or intravascular fluids in the radiotherapy process....but radiographers controls and manipulate the radiation administration and dose. For the doctor they know little or nothing in dose calculation I may agree if u say medical physicist.

Guy rest abeg. If you want to treat, then go get your mbbs and specialise in radiology. Simple as ABC.

The advanced Radiographers are Operators that operates under the supervision of radiologists. That's the problem with you guys. You want to do the work of doctors when you don't have an indept knowledge of the physiology of the human body as well as the pathological basis of disease of the various systems. You are outdated.
Anatomy(gross, histology, embryology)
BCH
Physiology
Pathology (both general and radiographic pathology)
Pharmacology
Microbiology
Are all part of the Radiography curriculum.
You just keep shouting "operator" without having sufficient knowledge on realities, you are just a student, graduate first and come to the hospital settings.

You are so daft. Is clinic not still hospital or health settings?
Can they work in industry or manufacturing company use ur brain na....I said Radiography can totally do without clinic or hospital or anything related to health like in military research/manufacturing (nuclear and radiation weaponry), Transportation ( Airports), refineries, oceanography, not even veterinary services etc....nurses must work in health setting otherwise they will do nanny.... Radiographers can chose to leave health line totally and practice industrial Radiography that's what I meant.

Curriculum have changed and Radiographers are being trained to do more, especially as we have shortage of Radiologists. How many Radiologists do we even have here with the way all of them fail primaries and fail to get into residency, even after getting in they still fail the fellowship exams
Imagine the abobi saying therapy means operation.

Your job as a medical radiographer aka Medical Imaging Technologists is to assist the doctor (radiologist) in hospital settings. So, you are a doctor assistant. Do you copy that?

And then, take note, your your work area is in the hospital setting where you take radiographic images of patients under the supervision of the Radiologist. Outside the hospital setting, like in the military and other industries, radiographic images are taken by specialized Physicists.

Anytime questions like this come up, we change it to whose profession is better than the other.

Both courses are good in their own way. It all depends on what you want to do with it.

Both are recognized, have the same pay in government settings. But Radiography is slightly better than Nursing in private setting.

On a side note, If you do not want to be tied to the apron of medicine. That is; if you do not want doctors to supervise your work, then do not go for Radiography.

Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing are the oldest medical professions. As such they are independent. But anyother allied medical course is tied to medicine and was created due to technological advancement.

Therefore MLSt is always tied to pathologist, Radiographer will always be tied to Radiologist, Physiotherapist will always be tied to Orthopedic surgeons. Optometrist will always be tied to opthalmologist.

The other poster trying to disassociate Radiography from Radiology is day dreaming. No matter the knowledge you have in Radiography, it is nothing compared to Indepth Radiology which is beyond your scope.

These doctors designed your curriculum for you to be their subordinate not their equal or superior. Same goes for MLS, Optometry, and Physiotherapy.

If you don't want anybody to order you to do something, please go for Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. Before any of you would want to argue about Nursing being subservient to Medicine, please visit any government hospital and see for yourself. Not one private setting that trained auxiliary Nurses.

Know this and know peace.

Yes, I had to take it this far so you can understand that nurses are not slaves to doctors but professional allies. You started badly by speaking ill of the highly esteemed and noble profession that had long existed before your medical radiography. Nurses are doctors ( Clinicians) assistant in the hospital settings while Radiographers are doctors' (Radiologists) assistant in the radiology unit.

we are not doctor's and we can't do their jobs so also they can't do ours.
Again, you are wrong. the radiologist were the ones doing all the radiological procedures before now. They brought the radiographers into the hospital to assist them so as to reduce the workload on them. So, the radiologist do you job wella because that's their job before they brought you guys in.

Another error. Doctors cant do some nurses' work because there are some aspect of patient's care taught in nursing school that are not taught in medical school such as Preparing Bed making for various patients, Performing Bed Bath, Performing Back Care, Performing Perineal Care, etc.

You are wrong there was even a strike looming sometime ago where doctors claimed that they don't need nurses to work when the nurses were demanding for equal allowance....even up till now nurses is the least paid in paramedics

Again radiologist are not the one doing the job b4 now it's the x-ray technician....do u even know how shortage radiologist are perhaps the law does not permit them to administer radiation don't u get....what they can only do is ultrasound.
