Thank you for asking. Though I didn't learn work, I observed that masters often just work without verbally teaching their apprehentices what they are doing. I now wonder if they do the instructions when we customers are not there, and I considered asking my barber about this because I noticed this with him. But I haven't asked.

mostly, you will be the one asking the questions. If you don't ask questions, you won't learn a lot.

You have to be very, very loyal to learn any handwork. They won't tell you how they do it, but if they like you, they'll teach you.

If I were you, I will learn the one I can in the day from them and learn the rest on YouTube at night.

Determination is all you need.

Good luck.

It is called On The Job Training (OJT). Suggest you develop your own learning plan to keep track of your progress. Also, learn to always ask questions.

Surely you will get there if you are humble and patient.

It's difficult to see boss who teach much. My boss tgen refused to teach me anything at all. When I ask question, he will start frowning. It was another guy that use to come around the shop that I managed to learn from.

Nigerians bosses are slave masters

Same thing I experienced while learning inverter installations and repairs, whenever my boss is fixing inverters I only observe with eyes, sometimes when I ask questions I get a very shallow answer, but I was lucky that my boss son was also in the shop learning as a matter of fact he has been there right from childhood, I learn more from him, other Engineers around and from YouTube, main boss only knows how to use someone for his own gain.... I think I it used to be then, when people learn for free, but such rarely happen now as most of them now pay thier boss alot of money to gain the experience.

How will you pay a boss to teach you, and he/she is using you to play..... I have 4 boys learning from me for free

Additionally, it also depend on individual ability to put his or her mind in the little that the boss teaches...

My wife learnt tailoring for just 3month and used YouTube to master the remaining, she's now a master in sewing....

Hello Nairalanders. So, I want you guys to give your opinion about something.

For those of you that have learnt one trade or the other in Nigeria be it Tailoring, Mobile phone repair, Barbing, mechanic and so on, is it true that those bosses do not teach their apprentices well? I mean, is it that they just work and expect you to watch and just understand it just like that? Please, say your opinion.

Now, this is specifically for Hardware mobile phone repairers. How was your learning process like? Were you taught very well or you had to figure out stuffs on your own? I'm actually experiencing such now and I feel it's unfair. I have great interest in mobile phone repair but I hate being insulted for what I wasn't taught in the first place.

Is this a norm in Nigeria?

Nobody has time to teach you anything. Be you an apprentice or an employee.

It’s your duty to hack into your boss or employer’s brain, make a copy of the brain and add it what you already know. While observing my a fundamental rule of power. “Never outshine thy master”. Know and act like you know little but have an insatiable appetite to learn vivaciously.

But in other to hack into your Master’s / Employer’s brain, you have to bring something to the table.

You must be possessed with the desire to learn and help him reduce his stress. If you can do this, he will trust you and start giving little things to handle and you grow from there.

This is what I call the “Jacob’s principle”.

And my Eastern brothers adopted this method years ago under the ‘ Nwa boy’ module which is now a subject of discuss at the IVY league school. E.g Harvard Business School.

I have tried it repeatedly and it has worked for me tremendously. I always end up sacking my bosses cos they won’t let me go and won’t pay me well.

Mind you, I did this as a baby lawyer and that’s a how I learnt everything I know today. And it’s how I became a consultant to my fellow lawyers when it comes to litigation.

I photocopied the brain of all the bosses I ever worked with or worked for. From SAN down to the best litigator I ever met in my existence.

But this came at the cost of working 16 hrs minimum everyday with no weekend or holidays.

I even did my colleagues cases just to gain experience. They thought I was being foolish or trying to overly please our bosses. But I knew what I was seeking after.

But let me ask; what is your plan?

How do you intend to achieve this plan?

I learnt by asking questions after we have left the clients place.

I also practiced and used YouTube a lot.. You can't expect master spilling trade secrets in the presence of a client nah

And again

My 2 senior colleagues taught me 30%
My boss 50%
And the other shops 20%.

We human are competitive by nature because resources are limited. So the fact that you learning a trade doesn't mean, you will be taught everything 100%, because your boss's trade secret is why he stands out. it's his signature that enables him compete in the saturated market.

So why would you expect him to hand over his trade secrets to you?

Chances are you will surpass him or the fear of you taking over the market (with your newly improved ideas added to his), or you could take over his clients.

People only teach their own children everything to be better than them (the parents), not an outsider.

Hmm. You have a point here. I however believe this is one reason Africa or at least Nigeria is backwards. Unnecessary competition. To what end please?

It’s the old way. Ask questions. Keep asking until u understand. That’s the way to hold him/her accountable. They usually want to see the zeal in you and the quest to learn

Irrespective, any boss willnt allow you to spoil customer gadget, encourage yourself and get some tools to practice outside your boss domain. That’s how you become ur own boss
I will also advice that you learn from someone that will handle you as brother/friend

Thanks for the advice

That's the way they learnt too. In fact they don't know how to teach, they only know how to. They're stupid in fact.

I expirience this when I was working as a maintenance man in company like that , nigerians will expect you to know things without any explanation this is the reason why we have so many accidents on the road many were not properly taught how to drive undecided

Is this a norm in Nigeria?

You can learn when you ask questions after watching and then your master will know u are following up

Mostly, that's how it is. Just do your best to learn. If possible, don't blink when they're working. Cause they won't teach you everything. So that you won't know more than them. Oga na master kind of a thing.

Ok. Thanks for your response

An honest mentor will teach you most but not all so as to distinguish himself as par Oga na baba
An average boss will expect you to watch and learn and try and figure things out yourself.
What helped me during my training days was the internet....I watch YouTube videos alot and sometimes I ask and watch other mentors and apprentices during my spare time.
Even though I'm not close to perfection...
Sometimes my boss would send me on an irrelevant errand so as to miss an important aspect of our work but when he found out that I already knew that he was hiding from me, he loosen up.
So always DYOR.

Sir, what was the skill you learnt?
