I feel your pain! Anyways, don't ever wait for Nipost to bring stuff to your house.
Go to a main post office in your area. Give them the tracking number. They'll find it, if it hasn't been stolen.
When you get there, ask for the EMS section. They usually handle USPS packages.
Truly NIPOST has improved somewhat. I have experienced USPS a couple of time and they, along with NIPOST and EMS have been ok 80% of the time.

The intended recipient needs to to physically go to an EMS office and retrieve the packages. It shouldn't be lost.

Please save yourself a lot of headache in the future and use DHL - its more expensive but look at it as insurance that you will actually receive your stuff - or at the very least be able to track it and hold someone responsible for loss. I've sent mail via DHL frequently and have yet to face a single problem.

Granted, the USPS is highly controlled and has sophisticated tracking - as far as federal express, certified mail, and receipt tracking are concerned, but notwithstanding that mail tampering in the US is a serious highly punishable federal offense, (even reaching or putting something into someone else's mailbox without their permission is a federal crime), I still can't even begin to tell you some problems I've had with USPS mail in the US - (They lost (stole) my favorite watch, also a fresh wedding Gele my sister sent from New Jersey, several mail etc) also learned of opened and/or damaged packages I sent to various US locations (christmas toys, clothes etc for my nephews, nieces etc) . I was in their office almost every week around Christmas making complaints. shocked

Net is that as recently as last year, I lived on a route that was so bad that mail carriers eventually got arrested. Apparently some other people on my route had complained heavily too leading to investigations and the arrests.

And this is here o in the country that originates the tracking - Not to talk of trying to track them in Naija.

Please save yourself some pain and use a tried and true commercial carrier for international shipping.

My brother i too missed out on an admission, I sent my pacvkage thru EMS to a norwegian university and four months later the package has not arrived Trondheim. I was told to check EMS website, according to them it has left nigeria but TNT their partner is responsible for teh rest.
The sad thoing is there is really no one to hold responsible. I wish i coudl sue their A$$

I can assure you 100% that the problem is not on the USPS. Their sophistication level is beyond what you can imagine. The same goes for any of the mail carriers in the US. Never heard of NIPOST, but DHL should have been used for something like that.

You mean you sent a laptop and a PS console thru USPS to the redundant, inefficient NIPOST? i dont pity you! Are you saying you dont know that packages and even mails in envelopes coming from the west are always diverted, ripped and stolen?

After getting this xpensive stuffs, what stops you from couriering them? Apart from the fact that they get to Naija on time, your stuffs are insured or so. I dont know why we Nigerians like passing the short route even when we know the long route is much more better.

To all Y'all who sent your stuff from USPS to NIPOST and got it delievered, that was a hell of a profitable gamble you won. Don't ever try it again in your life! cos have seen close family relatives lost much more important stuffs than laptops and PS. Next time, Y'all might not be lucky to tell the story! sad

HI
I was surprised by your post because i received a package today from the USA i had been expecting to arrive around today or tomorrow as the company said 6- 10 days. Anyway i received a letter a sort of slip at home that told me to come to the post office that i had an urgent package. I went there and was told to pay the N250 charge on the slip. i paid it and went round the back and collected my package.

Well i guess maybe it was also a partial fault of the company that sent you the package they did not specify a means of collection. Anyway Sorry for your loss.

I cant advice any one to use the service of the NIPOST to receive any package sent from the foreign country because they are nt reliable, and besides most of the time the post men do steal some packages which are meant to be delivered to the right destination instead they will sell it off or use it, I was nt that much surprise coz most of the time they do tamper with an ordinary enveloped letter how much more a package containing Laptop e.t.c

And mildie what type of stuff do you receive through them that they charge you for N250? How baffled, cos ordinary a catalog was charged for N200 let alone of saying a larger package, Pls, tell us?

Na only God will help to revive and restore the glory of Naija!

I am sorry all, but I have been using the services of NIPOST and they have never failed me, the letters come in after four weeks which is well known to UK universities (because I was told by them).

I believe NIPOST may not be 100% effecient but they have improved in the last 1 year.

Rome was not built in a day

Let us believe in Nigeria and see ourselves as one of those that will turn things around for the better of this country.

the question is how many of us woulc willingly desire to work for NIPOST

but yet we keep condemning them,

pls let us encourage the little efforts they have made to improve things

It sure cant be lost for real and you are still going to get those packages but, it might take about 5- 6months before it gets here. Some significant improvements has been notice inthe way Nipost handles things. Its just that, it takes forever for your packages to get here. I got mine after 5 months ! i thought it was stolen and or diverted until Nipost brought a slip to my office to come and claim my packages. The First took about 5 months while the second took about 6 months. The funniest thing is that, they cant explain why things are like that.

The KOKo is, your packages are sure going to come. Try and go to the post office in your hood and lay your claims. Be close to someone there, exchange phone numbers and give the person the track number and i can bet that, your packages would come.

Cheers

Our postal system is simply rubbish, it was even better in the sixties and seventies when letters are delivered at your door. That is no longer possible when 90% of all houses and streets in the country are not even numbered. That's why the census have to spend huge amout to number streets and houses every decade. The post office buildings are all in state of disrepair. The way forward, why cant someone think of spending the excess crude funds on issues like house numbering in every local govt. rather than the politicians spending it anyhow as it is the case now. The database available when streets are numbered is unquantifiable this is when development can reach everyone, but when 90% of nigerians dont even have bank account or a domicile postal address,  I WONDER HOW WE CAN DEVELOP.

its ok and sometimes problems like that do occur but u, the owner will have to stand by the problem to solve it. I had similar problem sometime with my form I-20, i had to track and follow up, at the end i got it after several days it ought to have been delivered.

stay blessed

My fiance is going thru this exact problem. I have sent him some letters and photos before thru the Post office in the USA to Nigeria, and they did arrive. He had to 'settle' the people working there to get them, but none the less, he got them. But NEVER can you send anything of value this way. When I went there to visit him, I brought a PS2 there for him. I forgot to bring a memory card for it. When I got back home I wrapped one up in a few sheets of paper and figured it would be safe to send it. HA!! Its been WEEKS and he still hasn't gotten it. He's gone to the Post Office in Ketu many times because he knows it'll never be delivered to his door, but even there he's told they know nothing about it, right. angry I blame myself thinking that something of such little value would be taken. The woman at the P.O. here in NY told me it shud arrive in about a week. When he told this to the people in the Post Office there, they told him that the possible reason why it has not arrived is because of the fuel shortage. OMG. We both know that is not the case. He's now thinking about possibly going to Ikeja to ask at the main Post Office. I, personally, don't think this is going to accomplish anything, but who knows. Bottom line, never send anything thru the Post Office. DHL is really expensive. If at all possible, send your package down with someone that is going to 9gia in the near future.

I have already contributed my piece on a similar topic. Anyway i bought a TV camera in New York (B&H) and asked if they shipped to Nigeria as i was returning to London and so couldn't take the camera with me.
The guy said oh Sure and gave me 4 couriers. FedEx, DHL, UPS and GLOBAL MAIL EXPRESS. Nothing suggested that the so called Global Mail Express was another name for USPS. I chose Global Mail Express. The difference between them and FedEx was around $100. I paid and after getting back to london, i tried to track the item. It was then i realised that Global mail Express was another arm of USPS.
My people, the moment i realised they delivered through NIPOST, my beards went white from worry.
I quickly organised a 40 day fast with a continuation clause to carry on fasting until the item arrived lagos.
My phone bill went up as i called USPS every other day. There was no need to check whether my blood pressure went up around the time. Why state the obvious?
Finally the same God who saved Daniel from the lion's den came to me inside NIPOST's cage and delivered me and the camera to Lagos.

I have sworn not to go near USPS or NIPOST again.
Strangely when i have sent stuff by recorded delivery frm the UK, Its reached Nigeria without probs.

PRAISE GOD, HALLELUYAH

@Shinor, Just out of curiosity, did that "God" have you 'settle' him before so honorably handing over your camera? wink

I am working on a petition against NIPOST/EMS for the cases where people are asked to pay some extra money under the table to be able to pick up there packages/mail and I was wondering if any of you who have had issues of this kind with the company would like to sign my petition ?? I intend to submit it to the ICPC and also submit a copy to the EFCC. To Fight corruption in Nigeria , we the people need to get involved to some extent and this is a good way to get your complaint heard by the right authorities.

I myself have had to tolerate this for too long and since we already know that we have forces that are working to get things cleaned up now, it will be a good move to actually join the fight and let them know that we are behind them and at the same time get our voices heard. This is 2008, a year in which we can effect the crime situation in that country in a big way by simply taking advantage of what is being offered to us now to our advantage.

lipsrsealed The best way to send mail, in my opinion living in the states and save a little money, is to send it "REGISTERED MAIL" through the USPS because it is under CONSTANT lock and key until it reaches it's destination!!! The only downfall to that is that the package CAN'T be over pounds!! I had the unfortunate instance to have lost a package sent to Agege, Lagos that was valued at $220.00!!! angry Luckily, I had it insured!!! I sent a package "registered mail" however and it arrived there safely and untouched!! If you can afford DHL, UPS, or FED EX then by all means use their services! I feel bad for anyone that had packages "stolen" because I don't believe they are ever lost!! Actually, the package that I had stolen never made it past Florida during their tracking process before they paid me my insurance claim money!

First of all Mildie you are not supposed to pay to pick up. That was a scam. As for me we sent a box of ovulation kits to my in law in Nigeria and all they received was an empty box. Why someone would steal ovulation kits is beyond me

Why would you send a valuable item through USPS knowing that they have to deliver through NIPOST- their counterpart in Nigeria - which unfortunately is plagued by the "Nigerian factor"

I only send documents/magazines/books through USPS to Nigeria knowing that if it loose in transit, it is always replaceable.

Once beaten twice shy! Twice beaten, how many times shy?

I came across this post in an attempt to find any1 to complain to about the corrupt practices of NIPOST. NIPOST staff stole my laptop, after making so much noise, they had to release it anTd guess what?! it was open. NIPOST and all its staff from DG to messenger are thieves! if not while will they hold down ur mail within the country for more than 21days.

The most annoying part is that, we choose something cheaper but when it lands here (i.e when), you'll pay between 10-8 thousand bucks (negotiable 4 that matter). please next time, lets use UPS or DHL.

the first post on this thread was 2005, and till 2010, NIPOST is still in corrupt practices CRAP!
