Besides, football has changed in almost every position: A modern goalkeeper has to possess a skill set bigger than just shot stopping.

He has to be good with playing with the ball at his feet; He needs to be able to initiate attacks from the back through playing out from the back.

He also needs to have the ability to distribute well to team members and might need to be some kind of sweeper or a false defender to nullify strikers who feed on through balls.

De Gea is not particularly good in the skills i enumerated above so that might have played a major role in helping the coach make up his mind.
