Peter Obi's ''Moving From Consumption To Production'' Policy May HURT You. by Napata77: 11:58pm On Feb 10, 2023 |
Whenever Peter Obi says in his speeches that he will move Nigeria ''from consumption to production'', everyone cheers, and says ''Yes! This is a real leader! This is what we want!'' But how many of you have actually stopped to examine what he means by this policy, and how he will go about implementing it? Because the truth is, EVERY country on Earth that shifted dramatically from consumption to production, did so via dictatorial rule. Not through a democratic process. China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Vietnam, Zimbabwe... There is a reason for this. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get people to voluntarily agree to inconvenience themselves in any way, shape, or form, for the greater good, or for the greater vision. YOU HAVE TO FORCE THEM. Now, moving Nigeria ''from consumption to production'' will mean a lot of BIG changes, and I've no idea how he plans to implement them in a democratic dispensation. - First, money circulation will be tightened. That is the first step in getting people to consume less - by making less money available for them to spend. Essentially by making them poorer. Another way is by making the imported things they currently buy, MUCH more expensive, or banning them entirely, which leads to the next point: - Drastic cut in imports + higher import tariffs. Now, you simply cannot keep your current importation levels and talk with any seriousness about reducing 'consumption'. You WILL have to ban MANY items we currently import, and impose very high tariffs on other imports, making them more expensive. Because their presence here is the biggest disincentive to local manufacturers, who are 'crowded out' by their cheaper prices wrought by their advantage of Economies of Scale (the more you produce the cheaper it is per unit). The clampdown on imports will hurt Obi's kinsmen more than anyone else, as they dominate the import business. Will they withdraw their support when it hits them? So what items will be banned? Nobody knows. But it could be stuff that YOU need, or are used to having. It could be smuggled in, but you'll pay three times more, if you're lucky. - Petrol Subsidies removed. This will cause a sharp increase in inflation, and is one of Obi's most loudly-voiced policies. He says he will cushion the impact by offering vaguely defined 'palliatives' to the poorest Nigerians. Trouble with that is a lot more people are gonna need help when prices TRIPLE, than the 'poorest Nigerians'. - Salary cuts. A presidential platform based on austerity will likely lead to salary cuts and non-payment (or delayed payment) of salaries and pensions as money supply contracts in the economy. Expect a quadrupling of strikes and industrial action. - Reduced infrastructure spending. The Obi platform seems unconvinced about the utility of large infrastructure projects. This will create a problem when 'production' commences in earnest and there is no major transport and logistics infrastructure to evacuate finished goods from source to market efficiently and cost-effectively. The inability to evacuate goods will lead to a stalling of productive processes, and factories lying idle. High unemployment will persist, and social discontent will multiply. - Political turmoil. As the contradictions in his policies became ever more stark and glaring, the Obi government may resort to extra-judicial methods to silence critics and opposition, leading to widespread human rights abuses, unexplained disappearances and assassination of political opponents. - Intensification of Japa phenomenon. As the economy slides and the political scene deteriorates, more Nigerians will be forced to flee the country in search of greener pastures, with Obi's lofty promises a bitter, discarded nightmare. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Op, by your analysis on consumption to production, you do not mean well for Nigeria. U are trying to cause an unnecessary panic among the less educated. If he decides to slash off wardrobe and newspaper allowance of politicians and also stop crude oil theft alone, he would have reduced Nigeria problems by @least 30%. If he decides to channel this money alone into electricity and education, the economy will gradually starts to pick up beyond your widest imagination. This is basic Economics 101 that your bulaba balablue party failed with F11 results. 45 Likes 4 Shares |

The post reminds me of how stu.pid Nedu of Wazobia sounded. Many of them that get free contracts are scared. Any sensible person knows what PO meant Imagine what all the #500M that Tinubu is gifting his friends as donations to victims who never get the money. Do you know how many cottage industries that could start in Kano? Or what Buhari's useless 5k to the "poorest of the poor" could have done? satelliteDISH: Just like that, huh? But do you know how much Nigeria loses to oil theft? Just over 8 billion dollars a year. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/553541-oil-theft-nigeria-loses-700-million-monthly-official.html?tztc=1 It's really not that much. Nigeria's budget this year was 50 billion dollars. Her annual GDP is approximately 500 billion dollars. An extra 8 billion dollars will not transform Nigeria, especially with a thrifty govt in charge, with more emphasis on 'saving money' than spending it. As for slashing newspaper and 'wardrobe' allowance for politicians, that's just more cosmetic nonsense with no impact on the economy. Is all that even up to 50 million dollars? It will make good headlines though, for the gullible. If he decides to channel this money alone into electricity and education, the economy will gradually starts to pick up beyond your widest imagination. Your ''this money alone'' that will turn Nigeria to heaven, amounts to 8 billion dollars. That's less than half the cost of the Dangote refinery! You're an absolute clown. Can someone serious contribute pls? 3 Likes 1 Share |

Sorry Op, but you seem to be describing everything wrong with PMB’s Administration. Money circulation has never been tighter, our land borders in the South have been on lock for years now with a very high tariff slammed on importation with no resulting increase in production, the high cost of secondhand cars is not due to $ alone. The only place you can get the official pump price of petrol is in an NNPC gas station, but for the past six months Nigerians have been buying fuel at exhorting rates, so where has the subsidy been hiding?? Obi only spoke of hourly rates to boost productivity, how come you’re the only one that heard wage cuts?? We’re in a financial crisis because of borrowing for infrastructure, and you think it should be increased... are you okay upstairs?? More than 60% of our health workers and many other professionals have already japa’d you haven’t been living in mars, have you?? The only reason Nigerians have not staged another endSARS type of protest is because they don’t want to hear any excuse to postpone the elections and delay an Obi presidency. Take that hope away and watch the real political turmoil unfold in a very bloody way! 4 Likes |

olisaEze: The highlighted is a big lie, and shows that many of you know nothing about your country. Rice production has QUADRUPLED since Buhari came to power. ''Nigeria is [now] the largest producer of rice in Africa, producing about 8,435,000 tonnes annually, followed by Egypt, Madagascar, Tanzania and Mali according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). According to available data, Nigeria’s rice production over the past 5 years has been at the highest since 1999. The country’s rice production grew from 2 million metric tonnes in 2015 after the ban on rice importation to 9 million metric tonnes in 2021''. https://babbangona.com/interesting-facts-about-rice-farming-in-nigeria/ And the plan is to produce even more. Lagos just commissioned the biggest rice mill in Africa last month. YOU ARE RIGHT that Obi's policies are similar to what Buhari is doing. People forget that Buhari himself is a nationalist with ideas of national self-reliance that closely resemble Obi's philosophy. But it seems Obi will go even DEEPER than Buhari in implementing those reforms, such as by removing subsidies, tightening money supply, and banning more imports, which will bring more hardship. the high cost of secondhand cars is not due to $ alone. The only place you can get the official pump price of petrol is in an NNPC gas station, but for the past six months Nigerians have been buying fuel at exhorting rates, so where has the subsidy been hiding?? Your ''extorting rates'' are less than HALF what Ghanaians pay for their fuel per litre. When subsidy is removed by Obi, you will pay the same as them, or more. Then your eye go clear. Obi only spoke of hourly rates to boost productivity, how come you’re the only one that heard wage cuts?? We’re in a financial crisis because of borrowing for infrastructure, and you think it should be increased... are you okay upstairs?? Why else would you borrow if not to build your infrastructure? How do you grow your economy without building your infrastructure? Nigeria has NO CHOICE but to build infrastructure - power, transport (roads, rail, seaports, airports), and communications - all must be strengthened and expanded, or the economy remains stagnant. Anyone who tells you otherwise is an ignoramus, even if his name is Peter Obi. Thoughtless emotion. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

I'm sure you understand the meaning of job creation and productivity? Besides, read about PO's investments and businesses dispassionately and stop acting like an MC Olueran who's been fed with lies. Production is not about factories but industries. Also help yourself with the meaning of being "industrious". Svoboda: |

OP, from your write up you have set out to deliberately misinform the public and create doubt around one of Peter Obi’s sterling and unique pitches. You are not interested in intelligent discussion. I would rather ask, why are you doing this, is it for tribalism or religion? Is it as your side hustle to justify your pay? Or are you simply a stone cold sadist who doesn’t want Nigeria to make progress? 1 Like |

Nah so Buhari stop Nigeria from importing rice and closing the boarder, thinking we are self sufficient Obi was once the Governor of a state, he didn't do any tangible thing to move the state forward. I wander how you guys think what he couldn't do in small Anambra State, Obi will be able to do it in Nigeria. Jonathan and Buhari matter never teach a lot of you people anything. Obi that that was struggling to increase the IGR of Anambra State Ngige increase Anambra State revenue from ₦800m to ₦7.5b in less than 4 years he spent in power From ₦7.5b, Obi could only increase it to less than ₦8.5b after spending 8 years in power, and you feel this same man go get the idea to increase Nigeria revenue? ican2020: That sounds really good to the ear, but what if say, the Obi administration doubles or triples the tariffs on vehicle imports, to encourage local manufacturers like Innoson and others? Suddenly the cost of Tokunbo cars will skyrocket, and be priced out of the reach of many. Would your personal interest still come second to national interest in that situation? What if he extends the high tariffs to laptops? Clothes? Shoes? TVs? These are things he will HAVE to do, if he's looking to move us 'from consumption to production.' |

Parachoko: Thank you very much. You are correct. China owes its rapid rise to hardcore dictatorship - backed policies. A democratic China could never have accomplished what they did, in that short time of 20 odd years. Look at India. It's just a bigger version of Naija. Using western democratic systems and seeing very slow real development, because every major policy is subject to debate at the national assembly or parliament. It can take YEARS to pass one bill into law. It took Nigeria something like 15 years to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill. It was stuck in national assembly disputes, and back and forths with the presidency, over its contents. In the Chinese system, it would have taken ONE DAY to execute that bill. Not 15 years. Once Xi Jinping gives the go-ahead, case closed. End of debate. If Obi can rule with that sort of executive fiat (which the constitution does not grant him), he may succeed. He might feel the need, like leaders in his kind of position do, to crush opposition and dissident voices that would rise up aggressively, to resist his agenda. He could become a tyrant. |
