it will be nice if people argue with facts though.. data.. real life data, and not beer parlour gist..

Economical data exists for a reason.. not just people saying what they think.. Facts backed with data will always defeat personal opinion..

The first job that I got out of university in Nigeria (definitely not manager level), I was earning around a million Naira per month as at the time (USD 2,600 to be exact). It was for a US company and I was working remotely. I was not living in Lagos either, which means my expense was very low and I was saving a TONNE of money.

If not for second passport wey I dey find, I no go dey UK ooo. The math is not mathing in this country make I no lie 😂.

Anyway… I think you guys should let this argument to rest. People would have different perspectives and experience to things like this. At the end of the day, it is individual choices. Let everyone do what they feel is right for them.

What’s more important to you. Earning more money in a country were you can’t drive at 1am or living in a country that’s fair and value human life? Pick your struggle mate.

Not on Nairaland please. On this forum, beer parlour gist is the gold standard. Any talk of data and economic theory is met with scorn, like you're talking book talk while Nigerians are carting away dollars with bullion van at Idumota market. As it is on Nairaland, so it is in real life. This is EXACTLY why Nigeria is a poverty stricken Zoo.

Like for real? or na joke? Naira, more purchasing power than British Pounds?

No mind dem o! Please take time and read all the "Nigeria is better than UK" commentary. It's crazy. And some people think it's all OK because, ummmm, every opinion is valid.

Nigerians! Good Luck to you all.

After the return of democracy in 1999, there was another surge of returnees. These ones learned the lessons of the 1970's & 80's and didn't completely uproot themselves. I was among that cohort. By 2012 it became clear that Nigeria was still a disaster zone. Right now in 2023, for well known reasons, very few Nigerians residing abroad will take the chance of going back. So all the efforts to make us feel bad about our choices are FUTILE because we have 50 years of REAL RESULTS AND EXPERIENCE with which to make comparisons. Trying to drag down those ahead of you is not a good life strategy. It worked for a while, yes some of us fell for it but not anymore. Get it? You can't persuade anyone to indefinitely live on unrealistic HOPES of a nebulous Afro-revival.

Nigerians !!!! A truly special people!!!

I have always have this personal opinion that Africa through the meeting at Berlin Conference 1884-85 was never designed to work.
Yes some might make it because Binary must apply in everything, but with the majority; here is just a 'RAW Material Field'. The 'Cape of Good Hope' that has all the needed resources.

We can either revolt(although it can't work anymore because a slave can only be saved if he believes he's one. And so long a few can be threatened, everyone can be controlled) or Jakpa but never forget ur root.

Which root? The African state of being has been completely uprooted by our mass conversion to foreign religions, ironically religions brought by the very Arabs and Europeans that enslaved us. Don't get me started. I'll leave it at that. Nigeria - the largest of the African Zoos - is lost.

Good Luck to Nigerians!

This your attitude is what has destroyed Nigeria. Nobody cares to do or even just SAY anything about something that's blatantly wrong because they don't feel it affects them personally. Tell us, do YOU believe that Nigerians in the UK are all poor, with no savings and living lives of penury?

There's two things that encapsulate the Nigerian attitude to the collective, public society, both at home and abroad.

(1) As things go wrong, their mental and expressed response is always - "it's not my portion"

(2) When they get the chance participate in wrong doing, they always say "And what can you do about it"....the famous "Wetin you fit do?"

Good Luck to all of you.

Thanks for speaking up.

What you said can be said to be correct, but the difference between me & Tupac brothers is that I can point the exact place my fathers-father was birthed, they do not know theirs.

I have watched people like Hollywood Actors; Mr Whitaker coming down to Nigeria to take chieftaincy title and associate with his assumed root. Meanwhile just this week I read and saw photos of Americans coming to Africa-I think Osun to be giving a Yoruba name by their OBA.

The ones who cannot trace their origin; (they know they can never be white) are trying their best to get hold onto their assumed root, I that still know mine will be bringing my offsprings back to know their Genesis/Origos

This argument or debate has been done in the past and it always ends in a stalemate. Points have been noted, positions have been taken, people have been educated or not. It will just continue to drag on and on.

There was a guy years ago who argued that Nigeria was the best place to invest, that was even when things were better and people came and gave experiences, arguements etc but he stood his ground. I don't think I have seen him here in years hope he is ok. Everybody's experience will be different and people do what's best for them and their situation.

Forrest Whitaker took that chieftaincy title in my village in Nkwerre, Imo State.

Black American citizens of the USA have the best standard of living of any Black collective in any nation on earth, measured as a composite of socio-political and economic well being and rights or privileges. I understand their historic curiosity about Africa, it's natural. Beyond that, it's misguided. I tell them that all the time. Roots be damned, I will not voluntarily live in a country with insecure property rights and socialist economic policies and I will never encourage my children or friends to take such existential risks. Never. Good luck with all that.

That used to be me back in 2003, 2005. One of my friends, an investment banker in London, tried to dissuade me based on his own experience. This is a rich fellow, his father was an investment banker too. I took our company business proposal to him, he looked it over and said it won't work. He narrated his own experiences and said I shouldn't do it, but I didn't listen.

After over 15 years in the USA, I left an excellent job, sold off most things and went to live in Nigeria. I invested heavily. Our company was profitable for a while until around 2011, in all that time I never took a penny as salary. I lived off my investments in the USA. We did contracts with big companies....Unicem, Delta Steel....still owes us tens of millions of naira....Crushed Rock, etc. I learned so much about land and mining laws in Nigeria. I saw government in action up close and personal.

So I can say with every assurance of FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE that Nigeria is uninvestible, it's a SOCIALIST hell hole. And Nigeria today is orders of magnitude worse than when I finally exited in Jan 2013. The public data is there, the economic stats are available, they didn't fall from heaven. Such data is the result of cummulative economic trades, investment and experiences. It's REAL. Some of the people that got elected in this past election, I met personally in the course of business and because of that, I can tell you that things are going to get MUCH WORSE, this I know for a fact.

Stalemate? For the ignorant, yes. For the experienced and willing to give out honest and credible info, not so much.

Nigeria is a Zoo. I hope it changes for the better, I really really hope so. Then I might go back again, but a cold, hard headed assessment tells me it ain't gonna turn out any better even 25 years from today and by then I'll be dead anyway.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

Sir has used style to call me ignorant. I am not against giving out honest and credible information. Usually topics like this ends with name calling and people disrespecting one another and it drags on for pages and pages and the essence of the thread is lost.

I like what @semmyk does, creates a new thread and refers people to the thread to continue the conversation. At the end of the day, the thread is about living in the uk- life of an immigrant.

Hi,

I need to make an enquiry for a friend of mine who is resident in Nigeria. She is a biochemist in Nigeria and now she is seeking MSc opportunity in Health career, may be nursing, etc that would afford her to study bring in dependants and live here then she can get a job that offers sponsorship afterwards. I already told her nursing won't work as it can only be studied as an undergraduate.

However, I know I have seen mentions about adult nursing as MSc on this thread, I mentioned social work to her as well, but I don't know if it's easy to get jobs in social services after grad. Kindly advice on what course would work for this plan in reality please.

Hi,

However, I know I have seen mentions about adult nursing as MSc on this thread,

Some universities such as Salford, Manchester and a few other offers Msc Nursing. It is a 2 year pre-registration course which means they can apply for RN status with NMC at completion.

Pre-registration is the key word here. They will be required to submit a portfolio of 500hrs of work done in health and social care.

I tried them before. Nigerian customs made the recipient pay some some extra fees. Plus delays and all. Those were phones. I was really worried that they'll get missing.

If I'm buying laptop off Facebook here to save costs and get newer better quality than she would get from computer village at same price, and I pay close to £100 to waybill it, then there is no need buying it here at all.

As at yesterday out of 4000 British Citizens who have reached out to be evacuated, only 536 had been evacuated, 3500 left behind to the tender mercies of other countries. We have to beg for space on other countries planes.
We should be airlifting them together with their families before ceasefire ended which is what other countries are doing but we failed them.
Mehn Unthinkable things are now commonplace under the Tories. We are now once again the sick man of Europe. Terrible

This information is false.
As of yesterday the government said more than 1500 British Citizens have been evacuated. The last plane left yesterday. The demand was very low because most have been evacuated. Aside citizens, the government had to accept NHS clinical staff to fill up the space.

We are too quick to believe negative things about the UK and destructively criticise a country that opened its border to us when other Western countries tightened their borders and our birth country failed us.

He mentioned to me then that his insurance was like £1400. I was shocked as mine was just £900.

As they mentioned above, your insurance will keep on reducing as the years goes by
